J. L. RA'UB.

N.173,496. Patented Feb.15,187e.
fw P www y NJETERS. FKOTD-LITHOGRAPNER. WASHINGTON. (1C4 FFI@ JOSEPH L. RAUB, OF WEST MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENTIN IMPLEMENTS FOR CAPPING CARTRIDGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 173,496, dated February 15, 18,76; application tiled August 12, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
` Be it known that I, JOSEPH L. RAUB, of' West Meriden, Connecticut, have invented a Tool for Capping Cartridges, of which the following is a specification My invention relates to that class of instruments used for pressing the cap or primer into the recess in the head of shells used for breechloading guns 5 and the object of this invention is-to obtain a tool that shall be stronger and more easily constructed, and do the work better, than others with which I am acquainted, and is constructed by combining with the recessed plate P the levers L and X 5 or a spring may be used instead of the lever X. The lever L is formed with a cam at A, which bears against the lever X, and enga-ges with the hook on the free end ot' X at H. The lever L is secured to the plate P by a screw or pin, O, and the lever X by the pin V, upon which they swing. The plate P is formed into hooks at K, which are used to form a hold for the fingers when the tool is used to withdraw sticking cartridges from the chambers ot' guns. The lever X is atted at x to nearly conform to the shape of the cap.
The drawing at Figure l shows the tool in position to place on the head of cartridge Fig. 2 shows the position of thelevers when the cap is set in. Fig. 3 shows vside view section through P and L through O. Fig. 4 shows end view at recess R. S in dotted lines represents shell.
To operate the tool, place the cap in the recess and press it in with the hand to start it correctly. Then take the shell in one handA and the tool in the other; slide the rim ot' the cartridge into the recess at R until the cap comes under the latted part of X at Then draw the lever L, so that the cam A shall force the lever X against the cap, and continue the movement ot' L until the cap is set into a satisfactory position. Then by throwing the lever L to its first position the cam at A engages with the hook on X at H, and brings X back from the hea-d ot' the cartridge, when it may be removed and the operation repeated.
I claim as my invention- The recessed plate P, in combination with the lever X and cani-lever L, constructed yand operating as described.
,JOSEPH L. RAUB. Witnesses:
