ROPE HALTER Filed Nov. 13. 1928 Patented Nov. 5, y1929k UNITED STATES EDWARD AS. BECKWITH,
aoF ALBION, NEBRASKA ROPE HALTER Application filed November 13;1928. y-Serallqm319,160.
My invention relates to rope halters, the present embodiment being an improvement on the rope halter which I have shown and described in my prior application1 Serial No.
273,398, filed April 27, 1928.
The primary object of the present invention is the provision of an adjustable halter having no loose and flapping ends regardless of the adjustment. n
i() A second object of the invention is the provision of metal wearing surfaces for the purpose of increasing the life of the halter.
Having in view these objects and others which will b e pointed out in the following description, I will now refer to the drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view showing the adjustable connection of the halter parts on the lefthand side of the horses head.
Figure 2 is an illustration of a portion of the halter showing the adjustment of the crown piece.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 but showing how the adjustment may be made.
Figures 1 and 4A illustrate t-he iiXed clamps which are used for uniting the parallel portions of the rope in the crown piece and which are used in adjusting the halter to heads of various sizes, the clamps having sc metal wearing surfaces.
The present invention relates to the connection between the crown piece 19 and the loop formed by the chin piece and throat latch of the halter at one side of the horses head. This feature is shown in Figure 1 and more specifically in Figures 2 and 3, one of the details being best shown in Figure 4A. As shown in Figure 1, the crown piece consists of a portion of rope which is doubled upon itself to form a loop. The chin piece 13 and the portion 15 of the throat latch are integral forming the loop 111, the parallel portions of the rope being secured together by means of any suitable clamp such as that shown at 24 in Figures 2 and 3.
The hook member 29 is secured in the loop 111 as best shown in Figures 2 and 3. This hook is provided. with a ring 29a and with two hook portions 29b and 29. The ring 29a is adapted to surround the loop 18 as shown in Figure 2 and the hook 29b is adapted to engagethe loop 18. Y
vThe parallel portions ofthe crown piece 19-.are unitedv by clamps 25 and-26 whichare identical in form. Any desired number of these clamps maybe Vemployedand I have shown only, two of these clampsmerely for purposes of illustration. The esesntialffeature in the present invention is that the clamp 25 be spaced from the end .of the member 18 a distance which is substantially equal to the distances between the hook members 29b and It is also necessarythat the clamp 26 be spaced from the clamp 25at substantially the same distance. Thepurpose of this construction will be apparent from an inspection of ,y Figure 3. The haltery may be adjusted by drawing the crownpiece 19 through the `ring 29v and by latchingwit in any desired position. lVhen the crown pieceis drawn far Aenough for the hook 29C to engage the loop 18, the hook 29b will engage the clamp 25 as shown in Figure. 3. At the next adjustment the hook 29c would engage the clamp 25 andthe hook 29b would engage the clamp 26. It will therefore be apparent that regardless of the position of the adjustment,V the` halter presents no ,I'iapping end. Not only are flapping ends avoided, but a double holding means is provided inall cases exceptwhen the halter is Vused for the largest animals.
In order to provide a metal wearing surface between. the hooks *29h and 29c and the clamps 25 and 26,;I providetongues 28 as shown in Figure 4A which are turned over between the parallel strands of the rope. As a result, the hook members will bear against the tongues 28 which do not readily chafe as the rope would during use.
Having thus described my invention in such full, clear, and exact terms that its construction and operation will be readily undery stood by others skilled in the art to which it pertains, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is: f
1. A'halter having a crown piece consisting of a pair of parallel strands of rope with a loop at the extremity thereof, a plurality il il? of clamps uniting` said strands of rope, said clamps being spaced equidistantly from each other and the outermost of said clamps beino: spaced a like distance from the extrem.- 'ty of said crown piece. said halter also having a loop at the junction of the throat latch and one of the cheek pieces of said halter. and a hook member secured to said last named loop and adapted to simultaneously engage said first mentioned loop and one of said clamps or to simultaneously engage two of said clamps.
2. A halter having a crown piece consisting of a pair of parallel strands of rope with a loop at the extremity thereof, a plurality of clamps uniting said strands of rope, said clamps beingspaced equidistantly from each other and the outermost of said clamps beingr spaced a like distance from the extremity of said crown piece7 said halter also having a loop at the junction of the throat latch and one of the cheek pieces of said halter, and a hook member secured to said last named loop and adapted to simultaneously engagev said i'irst mentioned loop and one of said clamps or to simultaneously engage two of said clamps,
said hook member having two hooks projecting therefrom and spaced aparta distance equal to the distance between two of said clamps. Y
3. A halter having a crown piece consisting of a pair of parallel strands of rope with a loop at the extremity thereof, a plurality of clamps uniting said strands of rope, said clamps being spaced equidis'tantly from each other and the outermost of said clamps being spaced a lile distance from the extremity of said crown piece, said halter also having a loop at the junction of the throat latch and one of the cheek pieces of said halter, and a hook member secured to said last namedV loop and adapted to simultaneously engage said first mentioned loop and one of said clamps or to simultaneously engage two of said clamps, said clamps being provided with inturned tongues between the strands of rope to provide wearing surfaces for said hook member.
In testimony whereof I a my signature.
EDWARD S. BECKVITH.
