Description
Nov; 5, 1929. B. R. MANSFIELD JOCKEY STICK Filed Nov. 26, 1927 Patented Nov. 5, 1929 JOCKEY s'r rcx Application filed November 26, 1927. Serial" no. 235,929.
This invention aims to provide novel means whereby the line clamp in a drilling rig may be prevented from turning on the temper screw, the construction being such that the temper screw can, nevertheless, continue its right-line vertical reciprocation, as the walking beam which carries the temper screw 1s operated.
It is within the province of the dlsclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to whlch the 1nvention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description pro- 1 ceeds, the invention residesin the combina:
tion and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodimentof the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departlng from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings Figure 1 shows in elevation, a port1on of a drilling rig whereunto the device formlng the subject matter of this application has been connected,
Figure 2 is a horizontal section in which the device, for the most part, appears in'top plan;
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the device per se; and
Figure 4 is a perspective v1ew showing the radius arm. 1
The numeral 1 marksthe walking beam of a drilling or pumping rig, the walking beam being fulcrumed intermediate its ends, as indicated at 2. The numeral 3 designates a support, sometimes known as the headache post because it is provided in order to prevent an operator from being injured by falling parts. The temper screw 4 is plvoted to the walking beam 1 and is threaded into a hanger 5 including one or. more links 6 carrying the clamp 7 which engages and holds the line 8. v
A pivot element 9, such as a bolt, is mounted in the post 3 transversely thereof and passes through a sleeve 10 secured to one end '50 of a radius arm 11, the pivot element 9 and 16 of the link 15 extends between the bifurcations 22 of the radius arm 11 and is mounted pivotally on the bolt 14, the part 16 having a plurality of openings 36 that provide for an adjustable mounting of thelink on the pivot element 14. vThe outer end of the part 17 is received between the inner ends of jaws 18, and by means of a bolt 19, or other- ,wise, the inner end of the jaws 18 are con nected to the outer end of thelpartl7 of the link 15. The part 6 of the hanger 5 is re ceived between the jaws 18, and the jaws 18 may be provided with seats 20 for one side portion of the link 6. The jaws 18 are connected by a pair of tightening bolts 21 located on opposite sides of the seat 20, and immediately adjacentthereto. The jaws 18 are connected adjacent to their outer ends by tightening bolts 23. which may be arranged on opposite sides of the outer arm of the link 6. r v i In practical operation, the radius arm 11 and the link 15 can swing in a vertical plane, with the pivot elements 14 and 9 as centers in order that the temper screw 4 may have straight-line vertical movement as the walking beam 1 swings up and down. However, owing to the fact thatthe member 6 is engaged between jaws 18 on the link 15, the clamp 7 and the. hanger 5 cannot turn on the lower end of the temper screw 4.
What is claimed is 2- 1. In a device of the class described, a radius arm provided at one end with bifurcations, and supplied at its opposite end with a laterally off-set sleeve, a pivot element 'mounted in the sleeve, a link, means for connecting one end of the link adjustably between the bifurcations of the radius arm, and 7 means mounted on the opposite end of the link for holding a line clamp against rotation.
2. The combination With the line clamp 1 and thesupport of a drilling rig, of a radius arm disposed approximately parallel to the Mile which the clamp holds, means for mounting the radius arm at its lower end for swinging movement on the support, toward and away from the clamp a link disposed approximately at right angles to the line which the clamp holds, means for connecting the outer end of thelink to the clamp, and
an adjustable pivotal connection between the inner end of the link and the upper end of the radius arm.
In testimony that I claim theforegoing as my. own, I have hereto affixed my signature.
' BEECH R. MANSFIELD.
