Description

V 1929. A. F. HAZELWOOD 1,734,520
DOOR KNOB Filed April 12, 1928 Patented Nov. 5, 1929 PATENT OFFICE ALBERT FRANK HAZELWOOD, OF SAPULPA, OKLAHOMA DOOR Application filed April 12 The present invention is directed to improvements in door knobs, and more particularly to the manner for securing the same to the latch controlling stem.
The primary object of the invention is to provide means whereby the door knob can be easily and quickly applied to the stem or removed therefrom without the aid of screws or other complicated devices.
Another object of the invention is to provide adevice of this character so constructed that the stem can be conveniently placed in proper respect with the latch of a door or the like, and the knob easily and quickly at tached thereto and held positively against accidental disengagement.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is extremely simple in construction, ellicient in operation, durable, and one which can be manufactured at a very small cost.
While the drawing illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that in adapting the means to meet specific needs and requirements, the design ma" be varied and such other changes in the minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the invention as claimed, without departing from the spirit thereof.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and the drawing hereto attached, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through a pair of the door knobs.
Figure 2 is a sectional view on line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the spring bearing sleeves.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the drawing by like reference characters.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates the stem which is rectangular in cross section and is connected with the usual door latch in any approved manner, said stem being of such length that its ends will project upon opposite sides of a door. The projected ends KNOB 1928. Serial No. 269,559.
of the stem are provided with a multiplicity of teeth 2 which are directed inwardly, the purpose of which will later appear. The knobs 3 are of sheet metal formation and are provided with tubular shanks 4, said shanks being provided with openings 5, the purpose of which will be later explained. Fitted in the shanks 4 are sleeves 6, the bores 7 of which are rectangular in cross section in order that they will interlock with the stem 1 so that when the knobs are turned a similar movement will be transmitted to the stem to actu ate the latch. The sleeves 6 are provided with grooves 8 having tapered bottoms 9, and secured to the sleeves by rivets or screws are the outer ends of the leaf springs 10, and since the bottoms 9 are beveled the outer ends of the springs will be so located that they can selectively engage the teeth 2 of the stem.
It will be obvious that when the sleeves are fitted in the shanks 4 the knobs can be conveniently forced upon the extended ends of the stem, and since the teeth 2are directed inwardly, the outer ends of the springs will ride thereover and will snap into the teeth which will hold the shanks abutting the opposite sides of the door. Owing to the presence of the openings 5 it will be obvious that a pointed instrument can be inserted therein to lift the spring to permit a knob to be removed when desired.
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
A device of the class described comprising a stem having a series of teeth therein, a knob including a tubular shank, a sleeve fitted in the shank slidably receiving the stern, means preventing rotation of the sleeve upon the stem, said sleeves having a longitudinal groove formed in its outer periphery, a spring having one end fixed in one end of the groove and having its free end extending beyond one end of the sleeve, said groove having a tapered bottom to permit the free end of the spring to selectively engage the teeth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
