Patented Nov. 5, 1929 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE VICTOR GUINZBURG, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR T I. IB. KLEINERT RUBBER COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CATAMENIAL APPLIANCE Application led December 7, 1927. Serial No. 238,293.
This invention relates to sanitary appliances and more particularly to a novel and improved protector or envelope like casing designed to retain a removable period napkin or other similar material.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a sack like casing or envelope preferably constructed of moisture proof material such as thin rubber or the like with provision for receiving a waste absorbing pad or napkin, such as now commonly used by women and which is capable of being removed and replaced so as to prevent the soiling of under clothing.
A more specific object of my invention is to provide a substantially fiat like sack or casing, open at each end and designed to receive a conventional type of period napkin, pad or other absorbing material including pro- U vision for fastening the ends of the sack or casing to the clothing, or other supporting means, said sack having an opening to expose the napkin or pad to absorb the discharge.
To enable others skilled in the art to more fully comprehend the underlying features of my invention and its practical application for the purposes and uses intended, reference is had to the accompanying drawing showing a preferred embodiment wherein- Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing the protector and its relation to the napkin or pad.
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan.
Fig. 3 is a section, taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line i-4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a detail section taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is a further detail section taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 7 is a perspective showing a fabric re-enforcing strip.
Referring now to the drawing wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout several views, 5 designates the bottom of a substantially rectangular, elongated, sack like casing of moisture proof material such as a thin single piece of rubber which is creased along its longitudinal edges 6, 7 and folded over to provide the top portions 8, 9 constituting the top of said casing.
The shape of the casing is designed to accommodate and receive a. sanitary pad or napkin employed to absorb discharge. The pad or napkin commonly used consists of gauze, cellulose, cotton or other moisture absorbing material. Under ordinary conditions, the pad or napkin is directly attached to the under clothing, or other supporter, by means of safety pins or other fastening devices. This practice is objectionable for the reason that the pad or napkin itself is easily torn, often becomes disconnected, and when saturated with waste soils the clothing. In instances where a cotton or cellulose filling is used in the pad or napkin, it is necessary to provide an outside gauze, cheese cloth or other fabric cover to give it sufficient body and strength whereby it may be fastened in posit-ion. This is objectionable bei ause of the cost, difficulties in manufacture and lack of sterility. It also tends to pre luce unsanitary conditions in sewers and drains since the cloth or fabric clogs up the pipe connections and produces other plumbing difficulties.
It will be, therefore, seen that my invention permits of the use of any waste absorbing a0 material, without cloth, fabric or other binders. It is particularly applicable to receive pads or napkins capable of being shrunk or partially dissolved in water so that when discarded as waste it avoids the objections above noted.
It is also to be noted that by employing my invention re-fill pads may be purchased separately at little expense to the ultimate consumer as the holder may be repeatedly used.
Reference being had to Fig. 1 of the drawings it will be noted that the top of the casing is cut to provide an elliptical, substantially large opening 10, the meeting edges of which are vulcanized to a re-enforcing strip 11 of rubber which extends from the opening 10 to the open ends 12, 13. The edge 14 of the said opening 10 is seamed as at 15 and the edges 16, 17 at each of the open ends is simi 100 lai-ly seamed in the process of manufacture to provide a smooth finish. I
The napkin or pad may be inserted into the protector or casing from either open en d and 5 even when saturated, the under clothing 1s protected. As a rule, the portion of the pad or napkin between the open end and the large central opening is protected so that it may be seized by the ingers and easily Withdrawn Without soiling the hands.
As a convenient manner of attaching the casing to the under clothing, or other supportingr means, it will be noted that the bottom 5 is formed with integral tapered extensions 18, 19 to the side and end edges 20, 21 being seamed during the process of manufacture. A fabric strip 22 of non-elastic material is cemented to the tapered extensions on the bottom thereof, re-enforcing the same and the eyelets 23 whereby the casing may be attached by safety pins or other fastening devices to the under clothing.
IVhile I have shown and described my invention with some degree of particularity, it
25 will be realized that various changes, alterations and modifications may De resorted to. I therefore do not wish to be limited and restricted to the exact form shown but reserve the right to make suoli modifications as may fairly fall within and commensurate with the subject matter being claimed.
Having' shown and described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A protector of the class described comprising a tubular envelope like casing open at each end and formed from a single piece of moisture proof material, the top portions of said casing having a central, elliptical opening to 40 expose the sanitary napinn or pad positioned within the casing, the longitudinal meeting edges of said top portions being joined by reenforcing strips extending from the said opening to the onen ends of the casing, the
bottom of said casing having tapered extensions extending beyond the ends of the top portions, a fabric strip attached to each ot the said tapered extensions and eyelets at the ends of said extensions whereby the casing may be fastened to sunnorting means.
In testimony whereof he has aiiixed his signature.
VICTOR GUINZBURG.
