This invention relates to an improved construction in separable fasteners and has for its object to provide an engagement means for securing the slider in the desired position relative to the rows of interlocking members carried by flexible stringers.
A further object of my invention is to provide an improved construction in separable fasteners in which the pull member acts as a release for the engagement means when in position for pulling the slider in the direction to disengage the rows of interlocking members.
A further object is to provide an improved construction in separable features in which the slider carries an engagement means protected by a loop attached to or an integral part of said slider.
A further object is to provide a separable fastener embodying rows of interlocking members, a slider, an engagement means and pull member, the latter reciprocally mounted on a loop attached to or .an integral part of the slider, Which pull member may be swung to a flat, extended position at either end of said loop and which pull member will disengage said engagement means when in one of its pull positions. y
A further object is to provide a separable fastener embodying among other elements, a slider, a pull member and an engagement means, the latter being so designed as to tensionally retain the pull member in position when swung to a fiat, extended positionat either end of the slider.
A further object is to provide a separable fastener, embodying a ratchet engagement means designed to be disengaged by a pull member, said pull member acting as a locking means for said engagement means.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view, as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of co-operating elements as hereinafter more specifically set forth, claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings forming a part of the present application, in which:

Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the different views. I My invention relates to a fastener embodying a slider, having in combination therewith an engagement means to normally secure the slider against longitudinal movement relative to rows of interlocking members arranged along the opposite edges of a pair of flexible stringers or the like that constitute the meeting edges of an opening or gap.
In the description and the drawings forming a part of this application, I set forth two different designsof rows of interlocking members and each having a slider shown in association therewith. I do not wish to limit myself to any particular design of interlocking members nor to any particular design of slider adapted to lock or unlock said members, as the principle of my invention is such as it maybe adapted'to any particular design of a slider relative to any particular design of interlocking members with-which said slider is associated.
Referring to the drawings, 6 represents stringers which preferably will be made of woven tape or other like flexible material. 9 is a loop, which is itself attached to or an integral partof the slider. In Figs. 1 to a inclusive, this loop 9 is shown as an integral part of the slider, its free end 10 extending through an opening in the rear end of the slider and suitably attached thereto. In Fig.
5, the loop 9 is illustratedas a separate member attached to the slider. The free end 10 may be attached in the same manner as the free end 10 of the integral loop. The other end of the loop may be attached in any suit able manner to the other end of the slider8, i. e. by having its end extended through and suitably retained in,a small opening adja cent this end of the slider in the upper plate portion thereof or this end of the loop may be bent back over the end of the slider and welded or brased thereto. Ido not wish to limit myself to any particular way of attaching the ends of a separate loop 9 to the slider, as mechanical skill may provide many different etficient methods whereby this loop 9 may be suitably attached to various designs of sliders.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 4, illustrating the integrally formed loop 9, I provide engagement means, comprising dogs 11 formed from integral side portions of the'loop 9. The free ends of-these dogs 11 are bent downwardly in such a manner as to provide ratchet engagement with'the rows of interlocking members. Most of the common types of interlocking members now in use are arranged in rows to lock in staggered relationship relative to each other and for this purpose the curvature on the ends of these dogs 11 may vary slightly .to adapt the same for proper engagement with the respective rows of inter-- locking members. If desired, the dogs 11 may be in transverse alignment, thus providing for alternate engagement as the slider is moved relative to the interlocking members.
The material from which the loop 9 is made is resilient, thus providing resiliently disposed dogs 11. The'curvature of the loop 9 is such as to provide a guard for the en gagement means 11 (11", 11, 11, 11 and 11 mentioned hereafter).
12 is a pull member, having therein a transverse opening 13 through which the loop 9 is extended before attachment to the slider 8. This opening 13 is slightly larger than the material forming the loop 9, so that it may be easily reciprocated on the loop 9 and at the same time will provide suflicient space" therein, so that this pull member 12 may be swung over the bent or engagement ends of the dogs 11. When in this position the body portion of the dogs will tension down on the upper face of the pull member and temporarily retain it in flat position against the rows-of interlocking members.
Referring to Fig. 6, the engagement means or dogs 11 may be formed as a separate member and riveted, brased orotherwise fixedly connected to the upper face of the loop 9 (or or dog 11 may be formed from the longitudinal, central portion of the loop 9. The upper plate of the slider 8 is provided with a small outwardly extended portion 8, having a small transverse opening therein through which the bent end of the dog 11 may move up and down when being released and returning to engagement position. Referring to Fig. 9, the engagement means or dog 11 may be formed as a separate memher and riveted, 'brased or otherwise fixedly connected to the under face of the loop 9 (9 as the case may be relative to the type of loop used). In this modification the engagement means is under and guarded by the loop, which may extend slightly in advance of the upper plate of the slider before being bent upwardly. The extended portion of the loop is provided with an opening through which the end of the engagement means extends to contact with the rows of interlocking member's. In this disclosure, the member forming the engagement means is fixedly connected mid-way of its ends, extending in one direction to provide the engagement means 11 and in the other direction to provide the retainerll for the pull member, when the latter is in fiat extended position. This construction, therefore, provides a means for tensionally retaining the pull member at either end of the loop, when the pull member is'swung to flat, extended position relative to the slider. If desired, the engagement means with the retainer could be stamped out of the material forming the loop instead of being'formed as a separate member.
Referring to Fig. 10, the forward end of the loop 9 is provided with an extended U-shaped portion 9', the opening therein being in. parallel relationship to the upper face of the slider. The engagement means 11 is provided with a corresponding U-shaped portion 11*, with its free end extending down to normally contact with the 13o means in engaged position. It will be noted that in this modified form, the same as all other forms disclosed in this application, the
pull member operates in direct pull-contact with the loop and does not exert strain against the engagement means other than that necessary to raise it to and retain it indisengaged position while'the slider is being pulled in the direction to unlock the rows of interlocking members.
The foregoing specification and annexed drawings disclose the preferred embodiment of my'invention, but it is to be understood .that minor changes may be resorted to in the commercial adaptation of my invention without departing from the scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed.
What I claim as new is:
a 1. A slider for a pair of rows of fasteners of the kind described, consisting of a body member embracing the rows of fasteners; a
loop member fixed on the front of said body member and having its ends immovable with respectthereto; a latch member supported by said loop member and having an end normally engaging said fasteners; and a pull member slidably mounted on said loop member and movable toward one end of the loop member to free'the latch member from the fasteners and toward the other end of-the 40 loop member to permit engagement of. the
latch member with the fasteners.
2. A slider for a pair of rows of fasteners of the kind described, consisting of a body member embracing the rows of fasteners; a
loop member fixed on the front of said body member and having its ends immovable with ,respect thereto; a latch member supported by said loopmember and having an end resiliently engaging saidfasteners; and a pull member slidably mounted on said loop memlatch member with the fasteners.
3. A slider for a pair of rows of fasteners of the kind described, consisting of a body member embracing the rows of fasteners; a loop member fixed on the front of said body mcmber and having its ends immovable with respect'thereto; a latch member of spring metal having one end fixed to said loop memberand having its other end normally engaging said fasteners;f"and a pull member slidably mounted on said loop member and movable toward one end of the loop member to free the latch member from the fasteners and toward the other end of the loop member to permit engagement of the latch member with the fasteners.

A slider for a pair of rows of fasteners of the kind described, consisting of a body member embracing the rows of fasteners; a loop member fixed on the front of said body member and having its ends immovable with respect thereto; said loop member being of resilient metal and slit to form latching means turned 'down at the free end to normally engage the fasteners; said latching means being normally inclined from its junction with the loop member toward said body; and a pull member slidable on. said loop member and having a portion engageable between the body and latchin means to lift the latter upon movement of the pull member in one direction and to allow engagement of the latching means upon movement in the opposite direction. A slider for a pair of rows of fasteners of the kind described, consisting of a body member embracing the rows of fasteners; a loop member fixed on the front of said body member and having its ends immovable with respect thereto; said loop member being of resilient metal and slit to form latch ing means; said latching means being normally inclined from its junction with the loop member toward said body; a pull mem ber slidable on said loop member and havinga portion engageable between the body and latching means to lift the'latter upon move' ment of the pull member in one direction and to pass from between the latching means and body upon movement in the opposite di-- rection and said latching means having its turned down portion forming a pair of fingers positioned to engage both rows of fasteners, each finger engaging a respective IOW:

A slider for a pair of rows of fasteners of the kind described, consisting of a body member embracing the rows of fasteners; a loop member fixed on the front of. said body member and having its ends immovable with respect thereto; said loop member being of 3c resilient metal and slit to form latching means turned down at the free end to normally engage the fasteners; a pull member slidable on said loop member and having a portion engageable between the body and latch- .35 ing means to lift the latter upon movement I of the pull member in one direction and to allow engagement of the latching means upon movement in the opposite direction; and said pull member engaging the end of the loop 40 member adjacent the latching means to pull the slider, without exerting pulling strain on the latching means.
9. A slider for a pair of rows of fasteners of the kind described, consisting of a body member embracing the'rows of fasteners, a
loop member fixed on the front of said body member and having its ends immovable with respect thereto; said loop member being of resilient metal and slit to form. latching means turned down at the free end normal- 1y to engage the fasteners; said latching means being normally inclined from its junction with the loop member toward said body; a pull member slidable on said loop member and having a portion engageable between the body and latching means to lift the latter upon movement of the pull member in one direction and to allow engagement of one latching means upon movement in the A opposite direction and said loop member constituting a. stop to limit the action of the pull member in disengaging the latching -means 10. A slider for a pair of rows of fasteners f of the kind described, consisting of a body member embracing the rows of fasteners; a loop member fixed on the front of said body member and having its ends immovable with respect thereto; a latch member supported by said loop member and having an end normally engaging said fasteners; a pull member slidably mounted on said loop member and movable toward one end of the loop member to free the latch member from the fasteners and toward the other end of the loop member to permit. engagement of the latch member with the fasteners and said loop member and said latch member being so formed as to provide a means whereby said pull member may be positioned relative thereto to lock said latch member in engaged position.
