My invention relates to mining apparatus.
' An object of my invention is to provide an improved mining apparatus. Another object of my invention is to provide an improved mining apparatus of the wheel mounted type wherein the mining machine is adapt- Still another object of my invention is to provide an improved shearing machine adapted to cut kerfs in a vertical plane in the face of the coal. Still another `object of my invention is to provide an improved wheel mounted shearing machine of the pivoted bar type having improved means for swinging the cutter bar and improved means for holding the cutter bar in'its adjusted positions. A still further object of my invention is to provide an improved shearing machine of the self-propelled truck mounted type wherein improved means are provided for propelling the truck during the cutting and transport operations. Still another obj ect of my invention is to provide an improved mining machine of the pivoted bar type having` an improved bar swinging mechanism. These and'cther objects and advantages of my invention will, however,
hereinafter more fully appear.

In this illustrated form of my invention l have shown a truck frame 1 mounted on wheels 2 adapted to move relative to a track way 3. The truck frame 1 has fixed thereupon a unitary mining machine, generally designated 4, herein of the so called longwall type normally slidableon its` own bottom on the mine and having a generally rectangular machine frame 5 disposed on its edge or side; on a horizontal 'plane surface as at '6, on the truck frame. Further, the machine is pro-` vided with an elongated cutter bar 7 having the usual cutter bit. carrying cutter chainv 8 which is adapted to vbe circulated about the cutter bar by means of a usual drive sprochet'8,.the bar being pivoted, as at 9, on a transverse horizontal. axis on the front end of the machine frame 5 ina well known manner.V A usual electric-cable reel 10 is suitably supported on ,the rear end of the truck frame 1 and power medium is transmitted by means of conducting cables 11 and. 12 leading tothe reel and the mining ma; chine driving motor (not shown) 'respectively. The machine driving motor is herein of the usual electric reversible type and by it the usual driving connections for Vthe cutter chain, the improved means for` swinging the-bar aboutits pivot, and improved' meansfor driving the truck wheels, are drive enas hereinafter more fully. described.
ln describing my improvedfmechanism it will herein be observed that the rear end of the horizontally disposed longitudinally eX-V tending armature shaft 13 of the driving motor has secured thereto an armature-pinion 14 (see Fig. 3).'which meshes with a spur gearl lrotatable on a parallel axisvdisposed in the same horizontal vplane as the axis ofthe pinion 14.V As shown, this gear ,15, Vin turn, has secured thereto a. beveljpinitm 16 which meshes witha bevel ,gear 17 rotatable in a vertical plane andrthis gear 17 is suitably. secured by a key to a transversely'disposed horizontal driving shaft 18. The shaftl8 is also adapted to drive suitable Vgearing substantially similar `to that. describedvin my prior Patent No.1,470,570,"0ct.f9, 192S,.and which includes a suitable friction clutch not shown) and a spur gear 19 suitably secured to a sleeve 20'journaled upon a transverse horizontall stud 21disposed parallel with the shaft 18 and inthe rear thereof. ThesleeveV 2() has formed thereon a chain feed sprocket 22 rotatable in a vertical plane and which is adapted to be driven at a fast speed in one direction or at a slow speed in an opposite direction under the control of a suitable lever` 22 and other control means, not shown, in the usual manner as clearly described in the above mentioned patent. The sprocket is adapted to cooperate with an endless fiexible feed or drive chain 23. Suitable guide sheaves or sprockets 24, 25, and 26 are herein provided which are rotatable on spaced horizontal axes parallel with the axis of the sprocket 22 and by these sprockets the chain 23 is guided relative to the drive. sprocket 22. The shaft 18 is provided with a reduced portion 46 projecting laterally from the machine frame 5 (see Fig. 3) and this portion of the shaft has secured thereto, as by a key v47, an annular member 48 having suitable jaw clutch teeth 49. The chain sprocket 41 is likewise provided with jaw clutch teeth 50 oppositely disposed from the jaw clutch teeth 49. Journaled on a sleeve 50 on the portion 46 of the shaft 18 and interposed between the members 48 and 41 is a chain sprocket 5l secured, as at 52, to oppositely disposed sleeves'53 and 54. Moreover, the sleeves 53 and 54 are provided with suitable jaw clutch teeth adapted to selectively cooperate with theteeth 5()V and 49 formed' on the sprocket 41 and the member 48, respectively, in an improved manner.. A chain 55 cooperates with the sprocket 51 and similar sprocket 56 suitably secured to a transverse truck driving shaft 57 suitably carried by the truck *rame 1 at the rear of the` machine frame 5. The sprocket 56 is adaptedr to drive through a suitable friction clutch, generally designated 58, adapted to be oper'- ated by means of a suitable lever 59, a sprocket? 60 Whichin turn drives, through chain and sprocket connections 61 and 62, the truck wheels. A belt connection 1'0: is connected between the casing of the clutch 58 and a pulley secured to the reel 10 constituting a drive fer the latter during truck movement.
It will herein be observed that a shipperl nic-miser 63 cooperates with the sleeves 53 and 54 and this shipper member is suitably secured to a horizontally disposed non-rotatable operating shaft or rod 64 slidable on a combined bracket and chain guard 65 suitably secured to the side'of the mining machine14. It will herein be noted that the guard member 65 is provided with projecting lugs carrying set screws 65vivhich are adaptedto engage the brackets carrying the sheaves 3,()4 and 44Y to adjust the latter to vary the tension of the chain 23.Y As illustrated, the outer endY of the non-rotatable shaft or rod 64 is. provided with a suitable grasping handle 66 which adapte-:l to be held in a plurality of operative posit-ions by means of a spring pressed plunger 67 cooperating with spaced apertures 68 termed iny aportion of the'bracket 65. lBy throwing the clutch shipper` 63 and conse-` quently the teeth formed on the Asleeve 53 into" engagement with the teeth 50 formed onthe chain sprocket 41 the sprocket 51 and hence the truck wheels 2' are driven by means of the chain 23 isr and the drive sprocket 22 at avv slow speed in one direction and lat' a fast speed Q in the opposite direction. -Further, by'throivz ngrthe shipperr63 in an oppositer direction, consequently the teeth formed on the' sleeve intov engagement with the teeth .49'4 formed on; thc member 48', the sprocket 51 and.
consequently the truck wheels 2 may be-driven directly from the shaft 18 at a fast speed.
' The bar swinging members V87 and 88 secured to the cutter bar are provided with a cylindrical surface 69 with which a brake band is adapted to cooperate tohold the bar in its different angular positions and this band is operated by means of a suitable link connection 7l and a lever 72 pivoted at 78 on the machine frame 5. A suitable rack 74 is provided for holding the lever 72 in its adjusted posit-ion.
It will herein be noted that the rear axle of the truck has secured thereto a suitable friction braking device, generally designated 75, (see Fig. 2) which isadapted to be operated through suitable connections 76 and 77 by means of a lever 7 8 pivoted in a suitable manner upon the truck frame 1. This braking .device is adapted to control the movement of the machine at certain times during the Lcutting operation and movementV of the lmachine relativeto a trackway of a steep gradient, consequently preventing an excessive rate of movement thereof. It will further be noted that the forward axle of the truck is provided with a suitable chain sprocket 7 9 with which a section of a chain 8l) isv adapted to cooperate, the free end of the chain being secured, as by a roof jack 8l; (see Fig. 1). I,"Vhen the machine is mov- .ing relative to an inclined'trackway the chain is reeved about the sprocket 7 9 and in case the wheels lose their traction the `machine is none the less fed.
In the operation of my improved shearing machine it will herein be noted that when the machine is moving about the mine at a fast or transport speed, the sprocket 51 is in driving relation with the sleeve 48 secured to the shaft 18'and the truck wheel drive is effected under the control of the friction clutch 58.4 When the machine is disposed adjacent the coal face, the driving sprocket 51 for the truck wheels Ais engaged with the sprocket 41 and the clutch 58 is thrown in and the brake 75 is set, preventing movement of the truck wheels and consequently preventing` rotation of the sprocket 4l. The driving sprocket 22 is then rotated at a fast speed in a counter-clockwise direction under the control of the lever 22 Ydrawing in the chain between the sprocket 22 and the sprocket 41, which is prevented from rotating, and the cutter bar is swung upwardly, by the pull of the chain on the sprocket 84 carried by the cutter bar, from the full line position shown in Fig. 1 to the full line position, as at'A, as shown in F ig. 5, the brake band 70 being released at this time. The brake band 70 is then again set, holding the bar in this position and the sprocket 22 is again driven, causing the chain 23 to drive the sprocket 41 to effect sumping. The sprocket 51 being in driving engagement with the sprocket 41, the truck wheels are hence driven under the control of afriction clutch lto the lower dotted line position C at a slow or cuttingA speed likewise driven from the sprocket 22 which then rotates in an opposite direction. 'I` he brake band 70 is then set and the drive sprocket 22 is rotated in the same direction as during the swinging cut.. The
sprocket being still in operative engagement with the drive sprocket 41, the cuttervbar is withdrawn fromthe face of the coal to the position indicated at D in F ig. 5. The cutter bar is then swung upwardly to the-full line position shown in Fig. 1 and the truck isk i driven rearwardly at a fast speed relative to the trackway, the cable reel l0 winding in the cable 11 at this time, in the usual manner.
vWhile I have in this application specifically described one form which my invention may e assume in practice, it will be understood that this form of the same is shown for purposes of illustration and that the invention may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit or the scope of the appended claims. Y
TvVhat I claim as new and desire to secure vby Letters Patent is:
1. In a mining apparatus, a truck having running gear, a mining machine thereon having a cutter bar movable relative thereto, and means for drivingthe runningk gear of said truck and for moving said cutter bar relative to the truck including a flexible element common to both functions andmeans for effecting circulation thereof as a whole or movement of portions thereof relativeto another fixed portion including means for holding a portion thereof stationary.
2. In a mining apparatus, a truck having ruiming gear, a mining machine thereon having a pivoted cutter bar, and means for driving the running gear of said truck and for swinging said cutter bar including a flexible element common to both functions and means for effecting circulation of said element as a whole or movement of portions thereof relative to a fixed portion including means for holding a port-ion thereof stationary.
3. In a mining apparatus, a truck having running gear, a mining machine thereon having a cutter bar pivoted for movement in a vertical plane, and means for` driving the running gear of said truck and for swinging said cutter bar including a iexible element common to both functions and means for effecting circulation of said element as a whole or movement of portions thereof relative to a fixed portion including means for holding a portion thereof stationary.
4. In a mining apparatus, a truck having portions thereof relative to another fixed portion including means'for holding a portion Vthereof stationary.- Y
5. Ina fmining apparatus,a truck'havmg running gear, a mining machine thereon havving a cutter bar movable relative thereto, and
means for driving the running gearof said truck andy for moving said cutter bar relative to the truck positively in opposite Adirect-ions including a fiexible transmission element and separate members engaging said flexible element, one of said members constituting a `driving member for said running gear and the other member constituting a driving -member for moving said 'cutter bar.
6. In a mining apparatus, a truck having running gear, a mining machine thereon having a pivoted cutter bar, and means for drivingthe running gear of said truckand for swinging -said cutter bar positively in opposite direct-ions including a flexible transmission'element and separate members engaging said flexible element, one of said members constituting a driving member for said running gear and the other member constituting a driving member for'moving said cut-ter bar. `7". In la mining apparatus, a truck having running gear, a mining machine thereon having a cutter bar pivoted for movementin a vertical plane, and means for drivingy the running gear of said truck and for swinging said cutter bar positively in opposite directions including a flexible transmission element vand separate members engaging said 'flexible element, one of said members constituting a drivingmember for said ruiming gear andthe other member constituting a driving member for moving saidcutter bar. 8. In a mining apparatus, a truck having Yrunning gear, cutting mechanism movably mounted on said truck, and means for driving the running gear of said truck and for moving said cutting mechanism relative to the truck positively in opposite directions including a flexible vtransmission element and separate members engaging said flexible element, one of said members constituting a driving member for said running gear and the other mem- V ber constituting a driving member for moving said cutter bar.
9. In a mining apparatus, a truck having running gear, cutting mechanism movably mounted on said truck, and means for moving said truck and for moving said cutting mech` aniam` positively in opposite directions including a common endless iiexible element operatively connected to said cutting mechanism and said running gear at spaced points along its length, and means-for applying power to said flexible element. n
10. In a mining apparatus, a truck having running gear, cutting mechanism pivotally mounted on said truck, and means for moving said truck and for swinging said cutting mechanism positively in opposite directions including a common endless flexible element operatively connected to said cutting mechanism and said running gear at spaced points along its length, and means for apply.- ing powerto said flexible element.
11. In a mining apparatus, a truck havingV running gear, cutting mechanism movably mounted on said truck for pivot-ingabouta horizontal axis, and means for moving said truck and for swinging said cutting mechanism positively in opposite directions including a common endless iiexible element operatively connected to said cutting mechanism and said running gear at spaced points along its length, and means for applying power to said flexible element. y

In a mining apparatus, a truck having running gear, cutting mechanism vmovably mounted on said truck, and lmeans for moving said truck and for moving said cutting mechanism relative to said truck positively in opposite directions including a common endless flexible element and a plurality of selectively efiective power elements cooperating directly therewith.
13. In a. mining apparatus, a truck having running gear, cutting mechanism pivotally mounted on said truck, and means for moving said truck and vfor swinging said cutting mechanism positively in opposite directions including a common endless flexible element and a plurality of selectively effective power elements cooperating directly therewith.
14.
