machines and the object of our invention is to provide a wire gripping device of simple and eificient construction that may be installed on a well known standard type of wire tieing machine to make it possible to use long lengths of wire, as from a roll or a reel of wire, by cutting the amount required for tieing, off of the end of the wire each time a tie is made, instead of using short lengths of wire already cut to substantially the right length as is ordinarily done at the present time.
Other objects are to provide a wire gripping device of this nature that may be installed on a standard wire tieing machine with very little alteration of the parts of said machine, and that will make it possible to use a cheaper wire for tieing purposes and to economize on the amount of wire that is used.
Other and more specific objects will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanyingdrawings.

Referring to the drawings, throughout which like reference numerals designate like parts, I show a wire gripping device embody ing a base frame 5 adapted to be secured to an arm 6 and provided with two upwardly extending lugs 7 and 8 that form bearings for a shaft 9. Alower, non-movable, wire gripping jaw 10 having teeth 11 is fixed to the outer end of the frame member 5 and an upper movable gripping jaw 12 having teeth 13 is secured to the end of the shaft 9 and adapted to be moved toward and away from the jaw 10 by oscillation of said shaft. A spring 14 on the shaft 9 is arranged so as to urge the movable jaw 12 down onto the fixed 192s. Serial no- 281,681.

The arm 6 may be apart of the wire tieing machine and the frame '5 may be detachably secured thereto by screws 19. This makes an easy means ofattaching the wire gripper to the tieingmachine.
w The inner or rear end of the arm 6 is connectedby a pivot 20 with the frame 21 of, a wire tieing machine of standard construction, not specifically described herein. A spring 22 on the wire tieing machine is connected with a slu g 23 onthe arm 6 and urges the wire gripper inwardly toward the machine. An operating lever 24 on the wire tieing machine is arranged to come downon the top of the end of the lever 15 when the machine is in the inoperative position to hold the wire gripping jaws 10 and 12 apart or Open Suitable cam means, indicated generallyat 25 is provided for direct or indirect contact with the roller 18 to govern the movement of the gripper toward and away from the machine.
In the operation of this wire gripper the wire is drawn around an article, as a box that is to be bound with wire, and through the tieing machine and an end of-the wire is then placed between the jaws 10 and 12. As soon as the operating handle 24 is raised, the lever v 15 is released and the spring l4ijspermitted V to close the top jaw 12 down onto thewire so that, when the gripping device is afterwards moved outwardly away from the'wire tieing machine in tightening the wire around a package the pull of the wire'in the direction indicated'by the arrow in Fig. 4-will-cause the awsto grip the wire more tightly. After the tieing of the package the operating lever handle 24 will be returned to the inoperative position shown in Fig. 1 causing it to en'- gage with the releasing lever 15, raise the jaw 12 and release the end of the wire.
By the use of this gripper in combination with a wire tieing machine of this nature we a movable wire gripping jaw secured to the are enabled to use wire from a roll or reel which is much cheaper than bundled wire cut to special lengths and we are further able to effect a substantial saving in the amount of wireused. Where bundled wire is used it is obvious that different lengths will be necessary for diflerent size packages but where wirefrom a roll is used the difference in'size of package is'automatically taken I care of. v
The foregoing description and accompanying drawings clearly disclose a preferred embodiment of our invention but it will be understood that this disclosure is merely illustrative and that such changes may he resorted to as are fairly within the scope and spirit of the following claims.
What we claim is 1. A wire gripping device of the class described embodying a frame, an oscillatory shaft supported on the frame, a fixed and a movable gripping jaw supported respectively on the frameand on said shaft, a spring urging the movable jaw toward thefixed jaw and a releasing lever on the shaft for moving the movable jaw into released position.
2. A wire gripping device of the class described, embodving a frame, a shaft mounted for oscillation on the frame, a fixed wire gripping jaw on the outer end of the frame,
outer end of the shaft and arranged to cooperate with said fixed jaw to grip'a wire, a
spring on the shaft yieldingly urging the movable jaw toward the fixed jaw and a release lever on the rear end of said shaft for moving said movable jaw away from said fixed jaw.
3. The combination with a wire tieing machine having an operating lever, of a wire gripping device, embodying a relatively long rame pivotally secured at one end to said wire tieing machine, a shaft mounted for oscillation on the frame, a fixed wire gripping jaw on the outer end of the frame, a movable wire gripping jawsecured to the outer end of the shaft and arranged to cooperate with said fixed jaw to grip a wire, a spring on the shaft yieldingly urging the movable jaw toward the fixed jaw, a release lever on the rear end of said shaft positioned so as to be engaged by the operating lever on the machine for releasing said wire gripping jaws when said operating lever is in an inoperative position and cam roller means projecting sidewise from said frame into said wire tiein g machine,
