UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' ANDREW TEAS, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
I IMPROVEMENT lN COACH-PADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 173,371, dated February 8, 18 76; application filed October 19, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW TEAS, of Newark, Essex county, in the State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coach-Pads; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a' 'ings, as separate nut-sockets to be secured to the inner leather of the pad, as shown in Figs.
1 and 2.
1n the drawing, a represents a common padframe; I) b, the terrets; c c, the screws; 61, the jockey; e, the thin leather lining of the frame; ff, the backbands g, the inner leather of the padding; h, the padding 5 a, the socket; 0, the nut or burr.
The sockets a are cast, stamped, pressed, or otherwise formed of metal, with an opening, 1, for the terret, (or other piece of mounting,) and flanges 2 for their attachment to. l the inner leather g by rivets or stitches, as
shown in Fig. 5. Suitable openings are cut in the leather 9, and the sockets have their body put through this opening, and their flanges 2 secured, as shown in Fig. 3. The padding It can then be applied in the usual manner (covering over the sockets) to the inner leather.
When it is desired to attach this complete pad 9 h to the frame and jockey, the nuts 0 o are slipped from above into the sockets a a, either through opening 3 or by depressing tongue 4. The various terrets b and screws 0 can then be passed through the jockey, frame, leathers, socket, and into the nuts, thus securing these parts and the padding securely together.
It will be seen that by'the use of my invention manufacturers may make up their goods in'advance of the market, because any kind of terrets, or other mountings, and their burrs, can be used without mutilation of the padding. Y
I claim as my invention, as an improvement in coach-pads The sockets n n, in combination with the inner leather 9 and nuts 0 0, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above 1 described invention I hereunto set my hand'this 19th day of October, 1875.
In presence 0t J. O. CLAYTON, E. B. SAHVONY.
ANDREW TEAS.
