Description

To all whom it may concern.-
. tube, and from thence slowly percolate through UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
JB SMYTHE, OF HALLSPORT, NEW YORK.
' IMPROVEMENT IN HoulsEHoLD vlNEGAR-MAKERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 173,358, dated February 8, 1876; application filed July 31, 1875.
, Be it known that I, JOB SMYTHE, of Halls-a port, in the county of Allegany and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Household Vinegar-Maker; and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear and exact description of the nature thereof, sufiicient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully understand, make, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specitication, in which- Figure l is a side view otthe device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section thereof.'
Similar letters of reference indicate 'corresponding parts in the two figures.
My invention consists of a tube or cylinder with a narrow bore and a cord running therethrough in connection with a strainer at the bottom ofthe tube, `and a mouth at the top thereof, in the neck ot' which is a packing of cotton, sponge, or similar'substance, whereby any liquor that is capable of being converted into vinegar being poured into the mouth will slowly percolate through the packing into the the bottom strainer, whereby the particles of the liquor will be thoroughly exposed to the atmosphere, and owin gto action of the oxygen and car-bonic acid' therein acetous fermentation of the liquor will be caused.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a tube, which may be formed of any suitable material, and at,v its upper end a mouth or receiver, B, which'commun'icates with the'tube. C represents a cord, which is fitted within the tube A, and its lower end is connected to a cross-piece, D, which is stretched Aacross the bottom of the tube, so as to prevent the upward displacement ofthe cord. In the neck of the mouth B there is placed a packing, E, of cotton, sponge, or'other suitable material, and to the bottom of the tubeA there is secured a strainer, F.
The device will be suspended from the ceiling or other proper place, preferably by means of the cord C, and in this condition the vinegardrop, into the strainer F, and thence percolatesv slowly through said strainer to a place of co1- lection.
In these movements of. the liquor the par- 'ticles thereof are slowly and entirelyexposed to the action of the atmosphere, so that the chemical effect ofthe oxygen and carbonio acid therein will cause an acetous fermentation of the liquor, the result of which is pure vinegar.
The device as constructed will be found especially' serviceable for household purposes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The apparatus for making vinegar, the same consisting of the tube A,with mouth B and packing E therein, in combination with the cord C and strainer F, fsfubstantially as and for the purpose set forth?VVV JOB SMYTHE. Witnesses:
