This invention relates broadly to safety windows for banks and ticket oflices, and more specifically to a shiftable tray for such windows. A
The primary object of the invention isto provide, in association with a window of that class employed in bank tellers and ticket sellers cages or booths, which embodies a pane of non-shatterable, bullet proof glass, a counter tray in which may be deposited money, pass books, or other articles, said tray.bei1ig conveniently shiftable beneath said pane for transferring therein-deposited articles from one side of said pane to the other.

Referring to said drawings, 1 'des1gn ates the usual pilasters located at opposite sides of a cashiers or tellers window which is located over a deal table or counter 2 at which the cashier or teller stands.
Fitted in the window opening between the pilasters 1 is a pane 3 of transparent bulletproof glass which is disposed with its lower edge in substantially the plane of the top of the deal counter 2.
Provided in the deal counter beneath said glass pane 3 is an opening 4- of suitable dimensions within which is permanently fitted a rectangular frame consisting of side memhere 5 and end members 6, the latter having so horizontal top flanges 6 which rest in 1928. Serial No. 29,000.

Slidably disposed in overlying relation to the top surfaces of said flanges 6 and the adjacent portions of the counter are oppositely disposed horizontal plate- like flanges 7 and 8 formed on the inner and outer edges of a trough-like tray 9. Said tray, which is designed for the reception of money, pass books, and the like, is shiftable beneath the glass pane 3 to a position located on either side of the latter, as desired, the same having its supporting flanges 7 and 8 freely slidable upon the adjacent surfaces of the counter.
Mechanism for actuating movement of the tray back and forth from one side of the window to the other, whereby transfer of money and other articles is effected, comprises an operating lever 10 and a series of links and levers interposed between said lever 10 and the tray. The transfer mechanism herein shown for purposes of illustration includes a horizontal longitudinally disposed bar 11 which underlies the frame adjacent to one of its sides and which has upright end portions fixed to the frame ends 6, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
Said bar constitutes a support upon the under side of which, at an appropriate point, is provided a pivot pin or bolt 12 for the support of the operating lever 10 which is adapted to be swung horizontally beneath the inner edge of the deal counter. Rigidly attached to said lever, as by bolts 13 and 14 is one edge of a horizontally disposed guide member 15 which may be of flat plate form and which, as herein shown, is provided adjacent to its opposite edge with two suitably shaped guide slots 16 and 17 in which are disposed antifriction rollers 18 and 19 carried, respectively, by the relatively approaching short arms of two bell crank levers 20 and 21. Said levers 20 and 21 are pivotally mounted upon a supporting bracket 22 which is rigidly carried by and extends laterally from the under side of the adjacent side member 5 of the frame. An outwardly directed arm 23 carried by, or formed integral with, said bracket 22 intermediate the ends of the latter has a downturned flange 24 which has its ends I the opposite limits of movement indicated such intervals as in Figs. 3 and 4.
The bell crank 20 has its long arm pivotally connected to the outer end of a longitudinally disposed link 26 which has its opposite end pivotally attached to the bottom of the tray 9, or to a bar 27 which, having its opposite ends attached to said tray, underlies the latter, as shown.
Assuming that the tray 9 occupies the inwardly disposed position shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the tray is actuated to move to the outward position shown in Figs. 2 and 41 by shifting the operating lever 10 horizontally from its left-hand position toward its righthand position. Such movement of said lever actuates rotary travel of the guide plate 15 on its pivotal mounting 12. This travel, through the intermediacy of the bell-crankcarried roller 18 and the guide slot 16 in which the latter travels, actuates the bell crank 20 to swing from the position shown in Fig. 3 to that shown in Fig. 1. In such movement said bell crank, acting through the link 26, draws the transfer tray therewith. Manifestly, reverse movement of the operating lever actuates reverse travel of the afore said parts for returning the transfer tray to its original position.
A plate-like shield or cover 28 may be, and is preferably, employed in association with the transfer tray, it being designed that said cover shall overlie and completely conceal the tray when the latter occupies its outward 1y moved position, shown in Fig. 2, during cover has its opposite ends 28 turned downwardly at right angles thereto and disposed outwardly of the lateral edges of the tray and the flanges 7 and 8 of the latter. A transverse bar 29 rigidly connects the downturned ends 28 below the level of the tray, and
. pivotally attached to said bar is the inner end of a link 30 which has its opposite end pivoted to the long arm of the bell crank 21. Thus, in the final part of each swinging movement of the operating lever 10, said cover 18 shifted out of covering relation to the tray.
It will be noted that the slot 16 of the guide plate 15 in which is received the roller 18 through which shifting movement is imparted to the tray has its outer end portion 16 thereof so inclined relative to the axis upon which said guide plate travels that, 1n

Thus, the cover is permitted to remain stationary until shifting of the tray has been effected, whereupon, in the final half of the travel of the guide plate, the said roller travels in the angularly disposed end portion 17 of said slot 17, whereby force is exerted which acts to shift the cover in the direction opposite that taken by the tray in the first half of said movement; From this, it becomes apparent that, with the tray normally located at the outer side of the window and with the cover normally dlsposed in overlying relation thereto, the operating lever occupies a position substan: tially midway between its opposite limits of movement. To permit a customer to deposit in the tray articles for transfer to the tellers side of the window, the operating lever is swung to the right from said midway position to shift the cover inwardly into uncovering relation to the tray. Then, to transfer the tray and its contents inwardly, the lever is swung to the left, which action first moves the cover into overlying relation to the tray, followed by shifting of the tray while the cover is allowed to remain stationary. Obviously, return shifting of the lever from the left-hand limit of its movement to the midway position actuates the tray to 'move outwardly into underlying relation to the cover. j
The operating lever 10 preferably has an outer end member orsection 10 which constitutes a handle portion, such portion being telescopable therewith and being adapted, when not in use, to be inwardly thrust to a telescoped position in non-proj ecting relation to the adjacent edge of the counter 2. i
It will be understood that various changes in the construction and arrangement of some of the parts of the hereinbefore-described structure may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention-as defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed is- 1. In a device of the character described. the combination with a table or counter having an opening in its top, and a closed window disposed transversely over said opening intermediate the ends of the latter, of a trough-like receptacle slidably mounted in said opening, a stationary support carried below the path of movement of said receptacle, an operating lever pivotally mounted on said support, a cover for said receptacle slidably mounted within said opening, means intermediate said lever and said receptacle whereby manual operation of the former effects shifting of the latter from either end of said opening to the other, and means intermediate said lever and said cover whereby movement of the former effects shifting of said cover relative to said receptacle.
2. In combination with a counter having an opening in its top, and a closed window extending across the center of the opening, a tray slidabie in the opening and having front and rear plates slidable on top of the counter and over the opening, a pivoted lever, a horizontal guide member rigidly secured to the lever and having a pair of spaced slots, a pair of bell crank levers each having a projection on one arm thereof engaging in the respective slots, a link pivoted to the other arm of one of the bell cranks and to the tray, a slidable cover for the tray, and a link pivoted to the cover and to the other arm of the other bell crank, said slots of the guide member having parts formed so as to cause the cover to normally lie over'the tray when the latter is outside of the window and to effect inward movement of the cover to uncover the tray upon initial movement of the lever and upon further movement of said lever to move the cover over the tray and to then shift the latter to the inside of the window while the cover remains stationary.
8. In combination with a counter having an opening in its top, and a closed window extending across the center of the opening, a slidable tray in the opening, a movable cover for the tray, manual operating means, and
means connected to the cover and to the tray' and to the manual operating means so as to cause the cover to normally lie over the tray when the latter is outside of the window and to efiect inward movement of the cover to uncover the tray upon initial movement of the operating means and upon further movement of said operating means to move the cover over the tray and to then shift the latter to the inside of the window while the cover remains stationary.
4. In combination with a counter having an opening in its top, and a closed window extending across the center of the opening, a tray slidable in the opening, a pivoted actuating member, a pair of hell cranks, a cover for the tray, means to connect the bell cranks respectively to the cover and tray, and means to actuate the bell cranks by and from said pivoted member so as to cause the cover to normally lie over the tray when the latter is outside of the Window and to efiiect move ment of the cover to uncover the tray upon initial. movement of the member and upon further movement of the member to move the cover over the tray and to shift the latter to the inside of the Window while the cover remains stationary.
5. In combination with a counter having a closed window, a tray slidable beneath the window, a pivoted lever having one end free to provide a hand grip, a slotted member rigidly secured to the other end of the lever, a bell crank pivoted at a point spaced to one side of the lever and having a projection on one of its arms engaging in said slot of the member, and a link pivoted to the other arm of the bell crank and to the tray to slide the latter, and being located in register with said member.
