Description

i- 2, 2 P. P. BASTERREIX 1,733,047
sI'GuAL LAMP Filed Sept. 15, 1927 Patented Oct. 22, 19 29 UNETE STATES PIERRE PAUL IBASIERREIX, OF BUTTE, MONTANA.
SIGNAL LAMB Application filed September 13, 1927. Serial No. 219,279.
This invention relates to a signal lamp, and particularly to a construction having direction signals at its opposite faces and a stop signal and tail light associated with the direction signal at one face.
In the construction of signals of this character such as shown in my application filed November 30, 1925, Serial No. 72,197, it is desirable to provide for both a stop and tail light in cooperation with the opposite signal designations illuminated by a signal lamp.
Such construction provides for greater utility of the signal lamp by incorporating an additional element therein and still utilizing the partitions as reflecting surfaces cooperating with a reflecting surface upon the inner face of one of the signal plates disposed in alignment with the lamp for signal illumination.
l have therefore provided a construction of casing having at its opposite faces signal designations and a substantially horizontal partition extending between such faces with an inner reflecting surface. Beneath this horizontal partition a vertical partition isdisposcd which provides a chamber for a tail light while above the horizontal partition I form a vertical partition extending'down-v ,ward intermediate the opposite faces of the so casing and rearwardly to the back facejthereof. Both the inner and outer faces of this vertical partition are formed with reflecting surfaces one of which cooperates with the lamp for direction signals and the other with so a lamp in the chamber formed above the vertic-al partition and adapted to receive a lamp for the stop designation.
This construction is adapted to cooperate with a front closure plate having a signal designation at its upper portion-and a reflecting surface below the same, and also with a rear closure plate having a plurality of signal designations and a lower cut away portion cooperating with the tail lamp. Other and furtherobjects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure l is a front elevation;
Figure 2 is a rear elevation; gigure 3 is a vertical longitudinal section; an
Figure 4 is a detail on line 4-4 of Figure 3. The numeral 10 designates a lamp casing which may be of any desired size or configuration and provided with a suitable bracket 11 by which it may be mounted upon a fender or other part of an automobile so as to be visible from the front and rear thereof. The opposite open ends of this casing are provided with transparent closures 12 of any desired color, for instance red, and at the rear of these closures, signal plates 13 and 14 are disposed. These parts are clamped and retained in relation to the casing by means of the usual construction of rim 15 having bayonet joint connect-ions with a screw or stud 16 mounted in the casing.
The front plate 18 is formed at its upper portion with a signal designation 17 in the present instance referring to direction of turn of the vehicle, and the lower portion of this plate has a reflecting surface 18. The rear plate 14 is formed with an upper signal designation 19 and a lower designation 20, the latter referring to direction and oooperating with the designation 17 of the front plate.
The lower portion ofthe rear plate =isfcut away as at 21 to cooperate'with a suitable 3 lamp such as a tail light 22. a e 1 Connected to the body of the casing and extending from the front to the rear'signal plates I provide a substantially horizontal partition 23 having an inner reflecting surface 24 and anopposite reflecting surface25 at one end thereof. Beneath this partition 2. vertical wall 26 is provided which divides the space into a rear chamber 27 for the tail light and a frontchamber 28 for the socket 9o 2 for said light and the electrical connections 30 thereto. At one side of the horizontal partition 23 a lateral bracket 31 is secured to the casing and carries the lamp 32 for illuminating the space above the partition. Intermediate the opposite signal faces of the lamp a vertical partition 33 is provided which extends downwardly and rearwardly to the rear signal plate as at 34 having an inner reflecting face 35 and an'outer refiecting face 36, the latter cooperating with the lamp 32 for the chamber formed between this partition and the horizontal partition. The vertical partition 33 forms a stop light chamber 37 and a support for the socket of the 1am 38 therein, While the electrical connections 39 for this lamp are disposed above the signal designations 17 of the front plate.
Thelower portion of the casing is provided with an opening 40 communicating with the tail light chamber 27 by which the usual license plate will be illuminated. The inner face of the casing 10 where it forms part of the several lamp chambers isprovided with a reflecting surface.
It will be seen that the construction presented is of a simple character adapted to secure very efficient results and securethe maxlmum illumination for the tail and stop light 'Cl6S1gIl2Lt10IlS without interferlng with the efficient use of the opposite signal designations. The lamp for illuminating the latter ,is mounted at one side of the casing so that lamp is disposed out of direct alignment with .thedirection signals so that its rays are refiected by the inner walls of the partitions to secure a proper illumination of the signals its socket does not interfere with the proper passage of light to the signal plates and this Without such an intense ray as would be objectionable or blinding.
In the operation of the signal the circuit while a separate circuit is maintained for the tail light in order that it may be contnuously illuminated when in use. 'The stop lamp circuitjmay be either manually operated or automatically connected to the brake mecha .nism, as is common in the art. I 7
The specific construction of the several parts has been shown and described but the following claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire tosecure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1 A signal lamp including a casing-having opposite face plates, one of saidplates bearing a pluralityof signal designations and the, other of said plates at least one signal .designation; a substantially horizontal parti tion at the lower portion of the said casing having an upper reflecting surface and providing with the casing a lamp chamber beneath said partition, and another partition hav ng a vertical portion extending clownlportion upper and lower chambers cooperating with corresponding signal designations, and a lamp in said lower chamber for cooperating with the same signal designations on said opposite plates.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
