'WILl'JIAM JACKSON, OF ALTOONA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPARK-ARRESTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 173,298, dated February 8,1876; application filed December 18, 1875.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM JACKSON, of Altoona, in the county of Blair and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Spark-Arresters and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of referencemarked thereon.
The figure of the drawings is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of my spark-arrester.
This invention has relation to improvements in spark-arresters for locomotive-boilers; and it consists in the arrangement and novel construction of the various devices used, whereby. the sparks thrown up the stack by the draft and blast will be effectually prevented from getting out of the stack, as will be hereinafter more fully explained.
In the annexed drawings, the letter A desig nates a locomotive-boiler, of which A is the smoke-box, and B the stack. The cylindrical portion of the stack extends considerably above the lower edge of the inverted conical enlargement O on the upper end of the stack,
whereby ahopper, D, is formed for the reception of the sparks. This hopper is provided with an inclined bottom, J, which will conduct the sparks to an outlet-pipe, D, extending downward to the crown-sheet straddling the boiler, and emptying into a box, E, provided with a sliding door, a, operated by the stoker in the cab through the medium ofconnecting rods and levers c c. The upper portion of enlargement G is partially closed by an annular flange, F, a central opening being formed therein for the reception of an open inverted funnel, G, which forms part of a cylindrical reticulated or slotted exhaust-pipe, H, centrally arranged in the stack, and extending from the reduced end of funnel G to the bottom of the smoke-box.
When the products of combustion are discharged into the smoke box," that portion thereof consisting of smoke and gases will be carried through the meshes or openings '5 in pipe H into the open air, while theincandescent sparks will be-carried'up the passages d, between pipe H and stack B into hopper D, formed as above described, when the inclined bottom J- will conduct them to outlet pipe D, whence they will be discharged into box E. Upon reaching a suitable or appointed spot,
- the contents of this box will be discharged by opening sliding door a.
What 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The smoke-stack B, provided with the hopperD, having inclined perforated bottom J, centrally-perforated cover F, and dischargepipe D, in combination with the slotted tube H, having funnel-shaped mouth Gr, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM JACKSON.
