The present invention relates -to a detonating device, and aims to provide a novel and improved device of this character arranged in the form of a cane or at the end of a long stick permitting it to be used in a safe manner by children for their lamusement during celebrations and the like.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a detonating device constructed and arranged so as to explode small caps arranged upon a film or strip of material, whereby they are automatically fed to firing position successively, or immediately after the exploding of a cap another will be rapidly advanced to position to be exploded so as to permit the firing of the caps in rapid succession or in a manner to simulate the firing of an automatic gun or pistol.
lt is also an object of the invention to provide a device of the above indicated character, which is simple and substantial in construction, which can be manufactured economically, and which will be thoroughly efcient and practical in use.
lith the foregoing and other objects in view, which will be apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the drawings, it is to be noted that the upper portion of the cane or stick 10 is broken away, and that the illustration is confned to the cap supporting and firing Serial No. 230,790.
mec ianism. The lower end of the cane handle 10 is slightly reduced, as at 11, and extends into an opening or socket l2 in the upper end of the cap supporting and firing body 13. By reducing the lower end of the cane handle 10, a shoulder is provided which abuts against the upper end of the body so as to prevent movement of the bodywith relation to the cane handle when firing a cap. Any approved or well known method may be used for securing the body 13 to the cane handle 10, such as by passing a pin through suchv members or threading the reduced portion 11 of the cane handle into the bdy 13.

By providing the toothed disks 26 and smallv spacing collar it will be obvious that when the explosive caps pass under the collar they will not be damaged or ignited. The shoulder 15 on the body 13 has a pair et small grooves 30 therein in which the toothed disks 26 pass so as to assure engagement of the teeth'with the strip 18. The disirs and spacing collar to which they are liXed or integrally connected are mounted on a shaft 31 which extends across the opening 1d at the lower portion thereof and has its opposite end mounted in the bot y 13. At one side ot the spaced disks and rigidly connected to one of said disks is a ratchet 32 which is en O'o eed nous by a spring pressed pawl 33 so as to prevent vretrograde movement ot the disks, while iigidly carried by the disk 25 at the opposite side of the collar is one member ot a clutch 34 which engages the other member 35 'carried by a gear 36 which is also` mounted on the shaft. Also slidably arranged in the body 13 of the device is a hammer 50, which consists oi'f a head 51 and shank 52, said shank being slidable in a correspondingly shaped opening 53 in said body above the opening 1l-.
The lower end portion of the shank 52 as well as the hammer are located within the opening 14 above the shoulder or anvil 15 and a coil spring 54 encircles the shank and is interposed between the head 51, and upper end wall of the opening 14. It will be readily secn that the coil spring normally holds the hammer in its downward posit-ion. The head of the hammer 51 is preferably oi rectangular shape and is of sullicicnt size to prevent turningmovement of the hammer in the opening through the body of the dcvice as well as prevent it projecting beyond one side thereof, whereby to assure that the trigger la will engage under one end of' the head 51 to raise the hammer against tension of the coil spring 5d when the sliding` bor 4:0 is raised as by contact with the ground.
In order to form a protection l'or the stripped material having the caps 19 thercon, a casing 55 is provided having a pair of ears 56 on opposite sides and at the lower end thereof through which a bolt 57 extends, said bolt also extending through the lower end of the body 13 so as to provide a pivotal connection for the casing 55. Having thus described iiiy invention, what I claim as nevv is:

A detonating device comprising a casing having an anvil on Which caps are exploded, a spring actuated operating bar slidahle in 'said casing, a spring actuated hammer cooperating With the anvil and in parallel relation to the operating har, means responsive to the operation of the har for moving the hammer against the action of its spring, a coiled strip of explosive caps mounted in the casing, means for feeding the strip over the anvil on the operation of lthe aforesaid bar and including a gear- Wheel and clutch, and a rack on the operating bar in mesh With said gearvvheel.

A detonating. device comprising a casing having an anvil on Which caps are exploded, a spring actuated bar slidahle in the casing,a spring actuated hammer cooperating with' the anvil and in parallel relation to the operating har, and means responsive to the operation of the har for moving the hammer against action of its spring; together With a coiled strip of explosive caps having perforations therein, vtoothed disks engaging the perforations for feeding the strip over the anvil, a clutch member in association With the toothed disks, a gear- Wheel carrying the companion clutch member, and a rack on the operating bar in mesh With the gearvvheel.
7. A detonating device comprising a casing having an anvil on Which caps are exploded and a spring actuated operating bar,
a spring actuated hammer cooperating With the anvil and in parallel relation to the operating bar, and means responsive to the operation of the bar for moving the hammer against the action of its spring; together with a coiled strip of explosive caps mounted in the easing and' having perforations therein, means for feeding the strip overV the anvil, and means responsive to the operation of the operating bar for operating said feeding means.

A detonating device comprising a casing having an anvil on which caps are exploded and a spring actuated operating bar, a spring actuated hammer cooperating with the anvil and invparallel relation to the operating bar, and means responsive to the operation of the. har for moving the hammer against the action of its. spring; together with a coiled strip of explosive caps mounted in the casing and having perforations therein, spaced apart toothed kdisks mounted in the casing and engaging the strip to feed it over the anvil, a gearivheel and clutch connected to the disks, and a rack bar carried by the operating har and in mesh with said gearivheel.

A detonating device comprising a casing having an anvil on which caps are exploded, a spring actuated operating bar slidable in the casing, a spring actuated hammer cooperating With the anvil and in parallel relation to the operating bar, and means responsive to the operation of the bar for moving the hammer against the action of its spring; together With a coiled strip of explosive caps mounted in the casing and having perforations therein, a shaft journalled in the casing, spaced apart disks on the shaft engaging the `rip to feed it over the anvil, a paWl and ratchet on said shaft to prevent retrograde movement thereof, a gearwheel and clutch on said shaft for rotating the same, and a rack bar carried by the operating bar and in mesh With the gearuf'heel.
