DETONATING DEVICE Filed Nov. 3, 1927 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 A y j @je Fmg-9 Patented Oct. 22, 1929 PATENT OFFICE CARLTON V. SMITH, OF COQILLE, 'OREGON DETON'ATING :DEVCE Application filed November 3, 1927.
The present invention relates -to a detonating device, and aims to provide a novel and improved device of this character arranged in the form of a cane or at the end of a long stick permitting it to be used in a safe manner by children for their lamusement during celebrations and the like.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a detonating device constructed and arranged so as to explode small caps arranged upon a film or strip of material, whereby they are automatically fed to firing position successively, or immediately after the exploding of a cap another will be rapidly advanced to position to be exploded so as to permit the firing of the caps in rapid succession or in a manner to simulate the firing of an automatic gun or pistol.
lt is also an object of the invention to provide a device of the above indicated character, which is simple and substantial in construction, which can be manufactured economically, and which will be thoroughly efcient and practical in use.
lith the foregoing and other objects in view, which will be apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through my improved device.
Figure 2 is a side elevation showing the hinged casing swung downwardly. y
Figure 3 is a longitudinal vertical section tallen on line 3 3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary enlarged elevation of the cap feeding mechanism.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary section taken on line 5 5 of Figure 4, and
Figure 6 is a detail section taken on line (f3-6 of Figure 1. y
Referring to the drawings, it is to be noted that the upper portion of the cane or stick 10 is broken away, and that the illustration is confned to the cap supporting and firing Serial No. 230,790.
mec ianism. The lower end of the cane handle 10 is slightly reduced, as at 11, and extends into an opening or socket l2 in the upper end of the cap supporting and firing body 13. By reducing the lower end of the cane handle 10, a shoulder is provided which abuts against the upper end of the body so as to prevent movement of the bodywith relation to the cane handle when firing a cap. Any approved or well known method may be used for securing the body 13 to the cane handle 10, such as by passing a pin through suchv members or threading the reduced portion 11 of the cane handle into the bdy 13.
rlhe body 13 is provided with an enlarged opening lll which extends entirely through same from one side to the other, said opening being of rectangular shape and provided with a shoulder 15 at one side thereof forming the stationary firing surface. The rectangular opening 14C extends downwardly to one side of the shoulder 15, as at 16, the purpose of which will be set forth as the description proceeds. Extending across the opening la adjacent its upper end is a small shaft 17 for supporting a coiled strip or film 18 having explosive caps 19 thereon. The shaft 17 has attached thereto a disk 20 for holding the coiled strip to one side of the opening 14. In order that the shaft 17 may be rotatably mounted and be removed in order to mount other coiled strips thereon, a small opening 21 is provided in the body 13 at one side of the opening 111, while in the other side of said opening there is a notch 22 in which is arranged a spring clip 23 for engaging the opposite end of the shaft 17 from that received in the opening 21. The spring clip 23 is secured in position in the notch 22 by meansof a small screw 24, or the like, passed through one end thereof, while the other end thereof is free to be yieldably forced so as to permit removal of the shaft 17. At the point on the spring clip where the end of the shaft 17 engages, said clip is curved so as to form a slight pocket for receiving the end of the shaft 17. The notch 22 is of a width substantially the same as the diameter of the shaft 17 so as to prevent up and down movement of the shaft.
he strip 18 having the explosive caps 19 thereon extends downwardly and under a pair of spaced apart't'eeding disks 26 having teeth 28 which extend through pertorations 29 at the opposite edges of the strip or ilin, said disks being spaced and fixed to a small collar 25. By providing the toothed disks 26 and smallv spacing collar it will be obvious that when the explosive caps pass under the collar they will not be damaged or ignited. The shoulder 15 on the body 13 has a pair et small grooves 30 therein in which the toothed disks 26 pass so as to assure engagement of the teeth'with the strip 18. The disirs and spacing collar to which they are liXed or integrally connected are mounted on a shaft 31 which extends across the opening 1d at the lower portion thereof and has its opposite end mounted in the bot y 13. At one side ot the spaced disks and rigidly connected to one of said disks is a ratchet 32 which is en O'o eed nous by a spring pressed pawl 33 so as to prevent vretrograde movement ot the disks, while iigidly carried by the disk 25 at the opposite side of the collar is one member ot a clutch 34 which engages the other member 35 'carried by a gear 36 which is also` mounted on the shaft. A coil spring is arranged about the in the Yopposite direction, the spring pressed pawl 33 will engage the ratchet 32 so as to prevent Vturning movement ot the disks.
AVfhen the disks are held against movement the angled surfaces ot the clutch teeth will cause the gear to be forced against tension Y ot the spring 37 away troni the reel so that said clutch teethwill not engage. By this arrangement,`the strip 13 having the explosive :caps 19 thereon vwill only be ted downwardly Y i'ioin'the coiled portion of the strip 18.
- Extendino verticallv throueh the ouen` D J D i ings 14rand 16, and through openings 38 and t1 which is engaged by the lower end of a coil spring42, saidrcoil 'spring being in `nient with the'lower end oi tiie body 13 at its opposite end. The coil spring will normally hold the sliding bar ll() mits outermost position. Gn one side of the sliding bar i0 is arranged a toothed rack bai` 10 the teeth 41 ot which are in mesh with the teeth on the Gear 36. The rack teeth are of greater width than teeth independent ot the sliding` position of the gear From this it can be seen 'that when the bar el() is slid in the body 13 the gear 3G will be rotated. Extendingl through the bar 40 is an elongated slot fl-3 which has pivotally arranged therein a trigger del, said trigger being pivotally connected to the bar l0 by means ot a pin 45. rlhe lower end of the slot 43 only extends pariially through the rod, as at 16, so as to provide a body to which the lower end ot' a leaf spring d? is secured. The leaf spring 47 normally holds the tri ger in posit-ion so that the upper ond thereof projects slightly to one side oi" the sliding bar 40, the purpose of which will be set i'orth :is the description proceeds. The trigger ll has gradually curved cam surface 43 arranii'cd l elow the point ol' pivot thereof which a 'so normally extends to one side oli the bar Ll0, and at the side opposite to that which the upper end oi the trigger extends. The gradually curved cam suri'ace i3 is in engagement with an angled surface i9 at one sido ot the opening 33, so that when the sliding bar d() is forced upwardly against tension ot the spring 42, the tri r will be swung on its pivot so that the upper cnd ot the saine moves .into the bar 40 and is flush with the outer surta/Jo et said bar 110.
Also slidably arranged in the body 13 of the device is a hammer 50, which consists oi'f a head 51 and shank 52, said shank being slidable in a correspondingly shaped opening 53 in said body above the opening 1l-.
The lower end portion of the shank 52 as well as the hammer are located within the opening 14 above the shoulder or anvil 15 and a coil spring 54 encircles the shank and is interposed between the head 51, and upper end wall of the opening 14. It will be readily secn that the coil spring normally holds the hammer in its downward posit-ion. The head of the hammer 51 is preferably oi rectangular shape and is of sullicicnt size to prevent turningmovement of the hammer in the opening through the body of the dcvice as well as prevent it projecting beyond one side thereof, whereby to assure that the trigger la will engage under one end of' the head 51 to raise the hammer against tension of the coil spring 5d when the sliding` bor 4:0 is raised as by contact with the ground.
In order to form a protection l'or the stripped material having the caps 19 thercon, a casing 55 is provided having a pair of ears 56 on opposite sides and at the lower end thereof through which a bolt 57 extends, said bolt also extending through the lower end of the body 13 so as to provide a pivotal connection for the casing 55. Projecting 'from one side of the body is a lug 58 provided with a concaved upper surface which is adapted to be engaged by a sprino lip arranged ou thejupper end or' the casing 55 so as to hold the casingin proper position. lVhen it is fil lll)
y ircd to place a new strip in the device, the casing iiiay be .sv/ung upon its pivot so as to gain access to the opening` 111 in the body 13.
ln operation, the casina' 55 is swung' downwardly to the position illustrated in Figure @of the drawings so as to permit tlie removal oit the shalt 17'. Said shaft inay be easily ienioved by enertinp,` an outward pull on 'the end tliereoic engaged by tlie spring' clip llllieii the sliaiit 1'? ,is reiiioved a roll coniprisiiig tlie strip 1S with the explosive Caps 19 thereon inay be slid upon the shatt- 1'? and said shalt placed back iii the body 13 so as to be rotatably supported by the body. lllie end ot the strip .18 is then passed under the toothed disks 26 so that the teeth 28 will project through the periorations Q9 in tbe strip. The casing; may then be sivuneT back to its position and the lue; 58 Will liold the saine in closed posit-ion. The device is tlien ready for operation. By holdings; on the upper end ot the cane handle or s'ielr 10 and pressing the head lll on the slidingbar 4:0 against a rigid object, as tlie ground, the bar t0 will be slid Within the body 13 and cause the liaiiiiiier 5() to also slide in an upward direction by engagement ot the t loger therewith, the bar l() being),` slid tension o^ the coil spring' 425 While the liaii'inier is svvi against tension oit the coil spring' 541. is the bar l0 iiioves upwardly, tlie trigger /l-d which is in engagement with the head oli the hainiiier is gradually iiioved iiroin engae'eiiient ivitli the head due to the angled surface /lQ on the body 13 and the curved surface Il@ on tlie t 'mj As soon as the trigger autoinat-ically releases the liaiiiiiier it is returned to its initial position and strikes the explosive cap arranged tlierebeneath, said cap being@- Xplod-.ed between the stationary shoulder oi anvil 15 and the head 51 ot the liaiiin'ier. Ars the sliding bar 40 d the hainni'ei' are moved upwardly, the rack teeth. d1 carried by the slidiiugl bar Ll0 will rotate the gear 36 which will cause the feedingi dists to also rotate and ifeed a nevv portion olf the ,strip l@ liaviin;` an explosive eap 19 thereon t lllllieii pressure is re licved after the tiring of the explosive cap, the coil sprino l2 will return the sliding?, bar to i itial posuion., and as the saine is returned initial position, the spiiiisg1 urged paiv 33 ivill prevent retrograde nioveiiieiit the dislrs due to its engagement with the ratchet 3Q,
thereby preventing,I the old port et the strip 1S iiioni being iied backward. tl e pavvl prevents retrogiiade niovenieiit el' the dislis, the gear 36 is forced to one side inst tension oit the spring 37 by reason the inclined teeth o'i the clutch, nieiiibers hland riding; one on the other. The nioA` ieiit of the sliding bar l0 and the spacing; oli the explosive caps on the strip 18 are such that upon each operation of the device `against the action ol its spring, ineens tor explosive caps ivill be successively positioned under the lianinier so as to be exploded automatically one aiiter the other.
