Oct. 22, 1929. H. A. SELAH INSERT FOR ANCHOR BOLTS F1193 Jan. 16. 1926 WITNESSES:
INVENTOR Howard Ase/ah BY WM Patented Oct. .22, 1929 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HOWARD A. SELAH, OF HOMEWOOD, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC 81: MANUFACTURING COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
INSERT FOR ANCHOR BOLTS Application filed January 16, 1826. Serial No. 81,674.
My invention relates to inserts for anchor bolts and particularly to inserts adapted to be imbedded in concrete walls or floors.
An object of my invention is to provide an insert that may be embedded in a wall or floor and that is adapted to detachably secure an anchor bolt. 2
Another object of my invention is to provide an insert that is adapted to permit adjustment of the bolt in the plane of the floor or wall in any direction within the limits of the device.
A further object of my invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive insert for anchor bolts that may economically be made of malleable iron castings, that requires no machining operations, and that may readily be securely imbedded in a concrete wall or floor for detachably receiving an anchor bolt.
The present invention is directed to an insert for anchor bolts that comprises a cuplike casing adapted to be embedded in concrete, a bolt receiving portion having a T-slot for engaging a bolt-head and adapted to be so turned as to lock the bolt in place, and a spring for resiliently supporting the bolt receiving portion.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a view in vertical section of a device embodying my invention imbedded in concrete and with a bolt in place;
Fig. 2 is a view partially in plan and partially in section of the device shown in Fig. 1, the parts being in position to receive a bolthead;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the device showing the parts in position to retain and center the bolt-head;
Fig. i is a plan view of the bolt-retaining member;
Fig. 5 is an elevational view of the boltretaining member of Fig. 4.
Referring to the drawings, the insert or socket comprises, in general, a cup-shaped casing or socket portion 1, a central or boltretaining portion 2, a spring 3, a cover member 4.- and a supporting dlsc or washer 5. Gylindrical surface 6 of the body portion 1s provided with a plurality of radial Webs 7 extending from the top of the body and terminating in an annular flange 8 at the bottom thereof. The webs 7 and a flange 8 which are imbedded in concrete, serve to retain the casing therein. An inwardly extending annular flange 12, having a discontinuity or notch 13 is spaced from the end of the casing 1 to provide a recessed seat 14 for receiving the supporting or centering washer 5.
The central portion, or bolt-retaining member 2 comprises a disc 15 having a T-slot 16 that extends transversely of the disc, the overhanging portion 17 of the slot being cut away at one end to provide an enlarged opening 18 for receiving the square head of a bolt 19 while the bolt is in the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1. The disc 15 is provided with a shoulder 21 that engages with the annular flange 12, thus retaining the center portion 2 within the casing 1.
The shoulder 21 and the annular flange 12 are provided with coacting radial notches 22 that are adapted to engage and prevent the rotation of the bolt retaining member 2 while the bolt is being tightened into place. The bolt retaining member 2 is also provided with a boss 23 which serves to center the spring 3 in position between the bolt retaining member and the cover member 4:. The spring 3 serves to maintain the shoulder 21 in engagement with the annular flange 12 while the bolt 19 is being tightened.
The device is assembled by simply placing the bolt retaining member 2 and spring 3 in place and pressing on the pressed steel cover 4. To insert a bolt, the bolt retaining member 2 is rotated within the casing until the opening 18 corresponds or registers with the discontinuity 13, as shown in Fig. 2. The bolt-head may then be inserted in the bolt retaining member 2 and rotated to some position as in Fig. 3 in such manner that the an nular flange 12 prevents the removal of the bolt through the opening 18. The slotted retaining washer 5 may then be put in place in the recessed seat 14. To secure the inserts in a concrete floor or wall, bolts are first inserted in the retaining member and centered by disposing the slot in the supporting member 5 at right angles to the slot in the bolt retaining member 2. The inserts may then be fastened to a template which is designed to properly space them. Concrete is then formed around the insert which is imbedded securely therein when the concrete hardens.
In securing the machine or bracket, it is oftenfound-that the cored holes in the feet or braces are not accurately spaced so that it is necessary to secure some means of adjustment. This adjustmentmay be obtained by rotating the bolt retaining member 2 and the supporting washer 5 in such manner that the bolt is free to move transversely in the direction necessary to compensate forthe inaccurate spacing of the bolt holes. In case the foot of the machine is large, it is not necessary to use the supporting washer 5 as the foot may be supported upon the floor or wall or upon the upper face of the insert. However, in case the foot is of smaller diameter than'the supporting casing 1, it is necessary that the supporting washer 5 bev used.
It is thus apparent that I have invented an insert or socket for anchor bolts that is'char- .acterized by being simple and inexpensive to manufacture and that is adapted to detachably retain a bolt and allow adjustment of the bolt in the plane of the wall or floor,
While I have'described but one embodiment of the invention, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that various changes, modifications, substitutions, additions and omissions may be made in the apparatus therein-i1lustrated Without departing from theispirit and scope of .the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
*I claim as my invention:
