UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J OHN` WOODVILLE, OF'WASHINGTON, INDIANA.
IMPRQVE'MENDT IN PUMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 173,250, dated February 8, 1,876; application tiled August 6, 1875.
To all whom it may concern y Be it known that I, JOHN WooDv1LLE,of Washington, in the county of Daviess and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Pump, of which therfollowing is a speciication ,v
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a vertical central section of my improved pump, taken on the line c c, Fig. l; and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same on the line :c a', Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate vcorresponding parts.
The invention will first be described in connection with drawing, and then pointed out in the claim. p
In the drawing, A represents a tank or reservoir, that is attached by fastening-bands a to an upright board, B, and base C, being made ot' a size to be portable either on the The upright or back board B is for this purpose provided with shoulder-straps b, that may be also strapped around the tank to serve as handles. A strong tube 4or cylinder, D, of rubber, leather, or other elastic material, is placed into the tank, and secured to the back board B by strong bands d around two valves, E, which divide the cylinder into three sections or chambers, of which the lower is provided` at the bottom with a strainer, D', the middle one closed with the water entrance and exit valves E, whose seats give the required stability to fasten the cylinder irmly by the bands d, and an upper regulating-chamber with detachable top plug and cap F, that may be unscrewed for repairing the interior of the cylinder. The upper chamber is also provided with the discharge pipe and nozzle G, which is applied in any suitable manner thereto. The flap-valves E are cushioned by springs f, which serve as stops for preventing the valves from opening too high, and also for. springing them back to their seats, so as to secure their quick and positive action.
rlhe middle chamber of' the elastic tube or cylinder serves as the pump proper, a suction and force actionbeing produced by a follower orV presser, H, that is attached to a stirrup, H', having an operating lever-handle, I, for the alternate compression and expansion of the pump-chamber. The presser H is connected in any suitable manner to the stirrup and to the ch amber that is strengthened or re-enforced by stii'ening-plates or an encircling leather or rubberk band or otherwisethe compressing action forcing the water through the 'exitvalve and discharge-pipe, While the expansion supplies the required quantity through strainer and entrance-valve from the tanks. The detachable lever-handle I is attached by its forked and grooved end to an eye, g, of the stirrup, and a fulcrum, q1, of the back board, the stirrup passing sidewise and around the back board. A locking device, L, with curved prongs, slides in guide-staples of the handle I, and binds over the eyes of the stirrup and the fulcrum, to retain the handle firmly there on for pumping. A sliding and spring-acted link, M, is pivoted to an extension of the fulcrum, and placed by its end perforation over a projecting pin, g2, of the stirrupeye g, to connect thereby fulcrum and stirrup, and give rigidity and stability to the connection of 'stirrup and handle. For taking o the handle the connecting-link is detached from the stirrup-pin and the forked locking-piece drawn back, which releases the handle on swinging the stirrup out of the upper groove or recess.
Y The apparatus may be operated when carried on the back or when placed on the ground, one hand directing the discharge-pipe, the other working the pump-handle, so that it can be'used on account of its convenience, cheapness, and availability with advantage as a fire-extinguisher, a garden-sprinkler, and for `other pumping purposes.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the stirrup of the presser, of the forked detachable lever-handle, attached by a forked sliding lock-piece and a fulcrum and stirrup connecting pivot-link, substan tially as and for the purpose described.
JOHN WOODVILLE.
