MOLDED RUBBER BOOT Filed Feb. 21, 1929 fibfr'ed/ H Gamer! by T horn/(1,5 M/fnowLa/nd Patented Oct. 22, 1929 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ALFRED A: GLIDDEN AND THOMAS M. KNOWLAND, 0F W'ATERTOWN, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNORS TO HOOD RUBBER COMPANY, OF WATERTOWN, MASSACHUSETTS, A COR- PORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS MOLDED RUBBER BOOT Application filed February 21, 1929. Serial No. 341,769.
This invention relates to an improved molded vulcanizable rubber boot. In rubber boots hereinbefore manufactured the usual leg construction consists of an outside gum layer or leg cover, an inner layer of frictioned sheeting or other suitable fabric known as a leg form, and the lining proper which is frictioned on one side only.
In the boot of this invention there is a leg cover or outer layer of rubber gum, an intermediate layer of sheeting frictioned on both sides with rubber cement or the equivalent, a layer of gum compound containing fiber on the inner face of the frictioned sheeting and a lining positioned on the inner face of the gum compound fiber layer.
The invention consists in the improved rubber boot hereinafter described and partic ularly of the construction pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of our improved molded rubber boot.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail section through the leg portion taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Like numerals refer to like-parts through out the several views of the drawings.
In the drawings, 5 is the boot comprising a heel 6, a sole 7, foot portion 8 and leg portion 9. The leg portion 9 consists of an outside layer or leg cover of vulcanizable rubber gum 10, an intermediate layer 11 of sheeting frictioned at 12 and 13 on the outer and inner faces thereof respectively and known as the leg form, the frictioning being preferably of rubber cement.
A layer of gum compound 14 containing fiber is positioned on the inner face of the frictioned sheeting 11 and on the inner face of the layer 14 a lining 15 is positioned.
The boot is manufactured by drawing the lining upon an expansible boot tree and positioning the different layers 14 11 and 10 thereon. The lining 15 of the boot is drawn onto an expansible boot tree, the vulcanizable rubber compound of the boot, as a whole, including the leg 9, foot portion 8, sole 7 and heel 6 are built on the expansible boot tree and the Whole structure is then placed in a mold and is molded and vulcanized substantially as described in U. S. Letters Patent No. 1,692,828 dated November 27, 1928, mold for rubber boots.
The method of building and molding the boot is fully described and shown in an application for Letters Patent Ser. No. 214,942, filed August 23, 1927, process for manufacturing rubber boots, Glidden, Knowland and Davis, inventors.
In the method hereinbefore employed in molded rubber boots in which an expansible boot tree is employed to press the boot against the mold during the molding operation, the leg cover gum tends to penetrate the leg form and stain the lining. The use of the layer of gum compound 14 which contains fiber prevents this penetrating action and yields a finished boot in which the lining is of good appearance and which has not been penetrated by the rubber. The lining preferably used in this form of boot has no gum coating of any sort thereon and the leg portion of the lining is seamless throughout.
We claim:
1. A molded rubber boot comprising sole, heel, upper and leg portions, the leg portion consisting of an outside layer of rubber gum, an intermediate layer of sheeting frictioned on both sides with rubber cement, a layer of gum compound containing fiber on the inner face of the friction sheeting, and a lining positioned on the inner face of the gum compound fiber layer.
2. A molded rubber boot comprising sole, heel, upper and leg portions, the leg portion consisting of an outside layer of rubber gum, an intermediate layer of sheeting frictioned on both sides with rubber cement, a layer of gum compound containing fiber on the inner face of the friction sheeting, and a lining positioned on the inner face of the gum compound fiber layer, the said lining being seamless throughout the length of the leg.
In testimony whereof We have hereunto set our hands.
ALFRED A. GLIDDEN. THOMAS M. KNOWLAND.
