This invention relates t-o kiln sheds for brick or the like, and more particularly with respect to the structure of the false side walls therefor.

The principal object of the invention resides in a structure of the false side walls for kilns and the like, and more particularly with respect to the supports and retaining members such as to permit them to be readily removable or adjustable to varying positions within certain limits, thus providing more elastic and readily handled false side Walls for the kiln than has heretofore been provided.

The full nature of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims:

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a cross section through a portion of a kiln shed with the false side walls mounted therein. Fig. 2 is a view taken on the line 22 thereof. Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an enlarged view of a section taken on the line 4 4 of F ig. 2. Fig. 5 is an enlarged view taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 1.

In the drawings there is shown a kiln shed comprising a base or foundation 1() having the outer permanent side walls 11, roof 12 and permanent partition posts 13. Stacked within the shed there is a kiln of brick 14. Ad-

jacent the intermediate supporting posts 13 of the shed and the kiln there is a passage for transporting the brick by means of the overhead crane 15 movable on the tracks 16.

The false side walls, illustrated in Fig. 2, are positioned to support the sides of a kiln, said walls being arranged to be adjustable, removable and portable to allow for the convenient access to, and handling of the brick when being stacked or transported.

Said walls comprise a plurality of upright prop posts 19 having their lower ends extending within a pier boxv 2O set in the concrete foundation or base 10. The pier box is elongated and rectangular in shape, formed preferably of cast iron, and is provided with a plurality of inwardly-extending projections 22 in alignment with each other on opposite sides thereof, said projections dening a plurality of compartments 23 adapted to receive the lower end of the prop post 19.' Vhen the lower end of the post is dropped into one of the compartments 23 of the pier box, it is firmly held and supported therein by suit-able wedges 18 positioned between the posts and projections 22. By reason of said pier box being provided with a plurality of adjacent compartments in which the post is secured, the position of the post is adjustable within certain limits, i. e., the length and breadth of the pier box. A tie bar 24 may be employed for tying together the top'of the posts 19 on each side of the kiln, if desired, the same being positioned above t-he kiln, and having the usual turn buckles 25 andrhooks 26 for detachably connecting them` to the tops of said posts.

Mounted upon and supported by said posts and spaced vertically from each other there is a plurality of horizontally-extending cross bars 27. Each of said cross bars 27 is provided with a plurality of brick-supporting carriers 28 adapted to hook over the tops of the bars 27 and support the brick 29 in position to engage the adjacent side wall of the kiln, whereby the kiln will be indirectly supported by the posts 19 and cross bars 27, and directly supported only by the brick 29 mounted in the supporting carriers 28.vk

By reason of the above construction, it is possible to provide the shed with any number of foundations and pier boxes so that the false side walls of the kiln may be readily erected in any proper location, iit being made convenient to erect and transport the same by means of the crane 15, so as to permit vthe ready handling of the brick in the kiln. Furthermore the construction is such asl to support the posts in such an upright positifn as would conform to the batter of the Wherein the foundation or floor of the shed is other than of concrete, the pier boxes may be embodied in individual concrete bases, to suit the character of the soil.

The invention claimed is:

1. A false side wall for brick kilns comprising pier boxes positioned in the foundation,a plurality of prop posts removably mounted in and supported by the respective pier boxes, a plurality of cross bars supported and carried by said prop posts, and a plurality of supporting carriers having hook portions adapted to hook over the top of said cross bars, said carriers being adapted to support spacing members therein for directly engaging the wall of the kiln and holding it in spaced relation to said props and bars.

2. A false side wall for brick kilns including pier boxes mounted in the foundation, a plurality of prop posts removably mounted in and supported by the respective pier boxes, each of said pier boxes including a plurality of compartments for selectively receiving the lower end of one of said posts and supporting the same in such upright position as would conform to the batter of the kiln, whereby said posts will be removable therefrom and adjustable as to position in their respective pier box and a. plurality of cross bars supported and carried by said prop posts.

3. A false side wall for brick kilns including pier boxes mounted in the foundation, a plurality of prop posts removably mounted in and supported by the respective pier boxes, each of said pier boxes including a plurality of compartments for selectively receiving the lower end of one of said posts and supporting the same in such uprightposition, as would conform to the batter of the kiln, whereby said posts will be removable therefrom and adjustable as to position in their respective pier box, a plurality of cross bars supported and carried by said prop posts, and means removably supported on said cross bars for supporting a brick in position to engage the wall of the kiln and directly sup- Y port the same in spaced relation to said posts j and bars.

5. A false side wall for brick kilns including pier boxes mounted in the foundation, a
