COMPANY, OF AKRON, OHIO, A CORIORATION OF OIIIO COLLAQPSIBLE TIRE-BUILDING DRUM Y Application filed June 30,
The general purpose of the invention is to prov-ide an improved collapsible drum or form especially for building tires in semi-flat form, the beads, when using this type of drum,
^. being .applied to the tire carcasson .reduced shoulders at the sides of the drum.
The particular object of the invention is to provide a sturdy, quick-acting, collapsible drum construction capable of securing a high degree of'contraction to permit easy removal of the finished tire carcass, 'the actuation of the various sections of the drum being positive to effectively withdraw them from the adherent carcass'and preferably being actuatable by a single operating member.
.A further object of the invention is to provide a collapsing mechanism for such drums adapted to separate the adjoining sections P slightly from the key section to permit freeV action thereof when itis removed from the core.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved form collapsing mechanism adapted to be self-locking in expanded condition..
The foregoing and other objects of the invention are attained in the collapsibledrum construction shown in the accompanying drawings and described below. It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the particular form thereof shown and described. Y
Of the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is an elevation of a collapsible drum embodying the invention, the drum being shown expanded; l
Figure 2 is a similar viewthereof, the drum being shown collapsed Figure 3 is av` section on line `3--3 of Figure 1; and
Figure 4 is a section on line 4-4 of Figure 1. Y
` Referring to the drawings, the numeralflO designates the usual drive shaft on which 192s. sensi 110,289,484.
is secured the chuck 11 having rigidly secured thereto one drum section 12.
To actuate the above-described collapsing drum, a toggle mechanism is provided :com-
prising a lever 26 pivoted on the chuck at 27 and a lever 28 pivoted at 29 to Ybar 17, levers 26 and 28 being hinged at 30. An operating handle 31 is secured tolever 26.
The toggle levers 26, 28 lare of such length as to maintain the drum section* 15 in the core section when actuated slightly past a dead center as shown in Figure 1. One of said levers has a stop 32 thereon and the other a pin 33 to prevent collapsing of the toggle levers in their positions past dead center whereby the drum is automatically locked in expanded condition. f 1
In collapsing the drum, the handle 31 1s' swung downwardly and through the toggle leversr draws bar 17 downwardl the latter withdrawing the key section, slig tly spreading the sections 13 and 14 as the ke section passes out of the drum circle and fina ly drawing the sections 13 and 14 inwardly after the key section, bringing the parts to the position shown in Figure 2.
Modifications ofthe invention may be resorted to without departing from the spirit thereof or the scope of the appended claims.
