Description

Oct. 15, 1929. KIRIN VEHICLE RADIATOR CAP Filed Nov. 21, 1927 INVENTOR. (9dr)? lfarz'n,
A TTORNE Patented Oct. 15, 1929 UNITED STATES MARK KIRIN, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN VEHICLE RADIATOR CA1? Application filed Novemberzl, 1927.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in a vehicle radiator cap, and has for its object the provision of a radiator cap adapted for use on vehicle radiator necks.
'5 With vehicle radiators as now commonly used on passenger cars the radiator neck is formed of one of two sizes, being either interiorly or exteriorly threaded, the size of either class being always the same.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a radiator cap which may be used on either type of radiator neck.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a radiator cap which may he used on either type of radiator neck and which will effect a tight and firm sealing of the radiator neck by the cap.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a universal radiator cap of this class in which the cap may be swung on its mountings on the neck so that an unthreading of the cap in order to replenish the water in the radiator will be unnecessary, thus facilitating the filling of the radiator and obviate the difliculties often encountered in unt-hreading a radiator cap, particularly when the water has become heated and there is a steam pressure in the radiator.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described. and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by a reference to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification and in which,
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of the invention mounted on a radiator neck.
Fig. 2 is a front elevational view of the in vention mounted on a radiator neck.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on substantially line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4l4l of Fig.3.
In the drawings the radiator 7 is illustrated with an exteriorly threaded neck 8. The invention comprises a ring 9 which is interiorly and exteriorly threaded and provided on its upper end with an exterior flange 10 to provide a shoulder for engaging the gasket 11.
Serial No. 234,605.
adapted to engage a lug 22 on the cover 17 and lock the cover 17 in closed position.
When the ring 9 is threaded on to the neck 8 the gasket- 13 will be engaged by the upper edge of the neck 8 and thus a leak proof connection of the ring 9 on the radiator neck 8 provided, so that the water in the radiator is prevented from reaching thethreads of the ring 9 and consequent rusting thereof prevented. When the cap 17 is swung to closed position the gasket 19 will be brought into engagement with theupper surface of the flange 12, so that a leak proof cap is afforded at this particular point.
Should it be desired to use the cap on an interiorly threaded neck, it is evident that the gasket 11 would in that instance be compressed by the upper edge of the radiator neck and the gasket 19 would function as illustrated, for sealing purposes.
In this way I have provided a radiator cap which is simple in structure, easily and quickly mounted, universal as to its use, whether it be on an interiorly or eXt-eriorly threaded neck, and one which affords a tight sealing of all places where leakage might occur.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of my invention, I do not wish to limit myself to the precise details of structure shown, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. As an article of manufacture a radiator cap of the class described, comprising: an annular member having its interior and its exterior threaded; a radially projecting flange at one end projecting interiorly and exteriorly, said annular member being threadable upon a radiator neck; a gasket positioned in engagement with said flange, said gasket engaging between said radiator neck and said flange for effecting a sealing; and a cover swingably mounted on said annular member.
2. As an article of manufacture a radiator cap of the class described, comprising: an annular member having its interior and its exterior threaded; a radially projecting flange at one end projecting interiorly and exteriorly, said annular member being threadable upon a radiator neck; a gasket positioned in engagement with said flange, said gasket engaging between said radiator neck and said flange for effecting a sealing; a cover swingably mounted on said annular member; and a gasket engageable with the upper surface of said annular member and the inner surface of said cover at the inner side of said annular member for eifecting a sealing.
3. As an article of manufacture a radiator cap of the class described, comprising: an interiorly and exteriorly threaded ring; an interior flange at one end of said ring; an exterior flange at said end of said ring, said flanges forming abutment surfaces; a gasket for engaging said abutment surfaces; a cover swingably mounted on said ring; and a gasket engageable with the inner surface of said cover and the inner edge of said ring for effecting a sealing.
4. As an article of manufacture a radiator cap of the class described, comprising: an interiorly and exteriorly threaded ring; an interior flange at one end of said ring; an exterior flange at said end of said ring, said flanges forming abutment surfaces; a gasket for engaging said abutment surfaces; a cover swingably mounted on said ring; a gasket engageable with the inner surface of said cover and the inner edge of said ring for effecting a sealing; and means for clamping said cover in close engagement with said gasket.
In testimony whereof I have signed the foregoing specification.
MARK KIRIN.
