AUTOMOBILE RADIATOR CAP.
Application filed. November 3, 1924. Serial No. 742,434.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Anorsros G. Lirrna'r and Airrriorir A. Hacks, citizens of the United States, residing in Kenosha, in the county of Kenosha and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Automobile Radiator Gaps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to closu es for automobile radiators and the like and, while it has particular application to radiator caps of the general type shown in Patent No. 1,472,878, granted November 6, 1923, to
Aloysius C. Lippert and John A. Sinko, it-
is not restricted to any particular construction, except defined in the appended claims.
An important feature of the invention is the provision, in a radiator cap involving an outer body and an inner locking sleeve attachable to the radiator neck of any inwardly extending rib, or bead, on said insert adapted to contact with the radiator neck when the insert is tightly screwed onto said neck to provide a seal preventing leakage of the water or steam from the radiator.
Another feature of the invention is the provision of sealing means, in a radiator cap construction of this character, which may be economically provided by practical manufacturing operations so that the cost of production may be kept relatively low.
A further important feature resides in the formation of the insert so that stock for threads therein is provided without expensive operations and with a uniform thickness of metal in the insert. Said insert, in accordance with the invention, is also conveniently formed toprovide clearance between thethreads and the sealing rib, orbead, above referred to, which will facilitate the attachment to the radiator neck in such manner as to provide an extremely tight sealing engagement, and this without entailing the additional expense of a separate operation to provide such clearance. I
Numerous other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description, which, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, discloses a preferred embodiment thereof. V
Referring to the drawings,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a radiator cap in which the invention is embodied, the same being shown in position upon the filler neck of a radiator and being partially broken away and sectionalized for convenience in illustration; and
Figs. 2 and 3 are horizontal sectional views, taken respectively upon the section lines 2 -2 and 33 of Fig. 1. I
in said drawings, we have shown, for illustrative purposes only, a preferred form of our invention, in which the reference character 11 indicates an outer body, having late-rally extending arms 12 and being provided with a hinged cover 13, adapted to carry a mote-meter 14, or like device, a. latch 15 being provided to hold said cover tightly to the body and in contact with a gasket 16, of rubber or like material, suitably positioned upon the interior of said body. An inserted locking member 17, of brass or like workable material, is disposed in a central opening 18 in said body and in the present instance is adapted to be locked to said body by means of integral projections 19, extend ing into a circular groove 21 formed on the interior of the cap body, it being apparent that with this construction, said body may be rotated relatively to the insert, but separation of the parts is prevented and the rota-- tion of the body will not tend to remove said insert from the radiator neck. The insert is attached to said radiator neck 22 by means of threads 23, formed on the interior of the bottom portion of the insert, which portion is rolled inwardly, as indicated at 24, to'
provide stock for the threads.
Said insert is provided with an inwardly extending bead, or'rib, 25 which may be formed by bending the material inwardly and exerting pressure upon the opposite ends of the insert to collapse the bead, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. This operation may be performed in such manneras to provide a line of seal 26 inwardly from the outer edge of the radiator neck and to provide clearance, as shown at 27, above and about the outer portion of said radiator neck and above the threaded portion 23 of the insert. With this construction, said insert may be screwed down so as to draw the circumferential sealing portion 26 of said head 25 tightly against the top of the neck 22, thus preventing leakage of the contents at this point. The gasket 16 is provided for preventing leakage at the top of the insert, or between the cover and body of the cap, so that the cap is leak-proof and thoroughly efficient in service.
For the purpose of screwing the cap onto the radiator, we employ a ratchet member 28, disposed in a recess 29 in the insert and having a projecting edge part 31 adapted to engage in recesses 32 formed in the outer cap body and engageable when said outer body is rotated in one direction only. One of the recesses 82 extends to the bottom of the outer body, as shown in Fig. 1, to facilitate the assembly of the body and insert with the ratchet member 28 in position, and it will be understood that the num er or ratchets and of said recesses might be increased, it de-.
rangementof the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, or sacrificing all of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described bein merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
