One of the objects of the'invention is to provide an expansion shield so' .constructed` and arranged as to possess superior gripping Another object oftheinvention is to 'provide an expansion shield adapted to be used with and expanded bya driven expanding member.
Another object of the invention is to provide a drive in expansion 'shield of rela tively hard metal having a sleeve of relatively soft orduc-tile metal disposed' onv the .outer .surface thereof and so'constructed and arranged that the soft metal sleeve will be expanded laterally Wh en the expanding member is driven into the shield but will not be forced longitudinally of the shield.
Another'object of lthe invention is to provide an expansion shield of the character specified that is economical to manufacture,
comprises a minimum number of parts and is practical and efficient in operation.
Further objects ofv the invention will ap pear from the following specification taken in connection with the drawings, which form a part of this application, and in which Fig. 2 is an elevational view ofthe shield shown in Fig. l;

The invention briefly described consists of an expansion shield comprising an elongated tubular member formed of a pair of sections.
EXPANSION lSHIELD yApplication med Auguste?, 1927. serial ne. 215,783.
The sections are tapered longitudinally-to --ing laterally from each end thereof, the
flanges being disposed in alinement when the sections are secured to form the tubular meinber. The shield sections are preferably formed of relatively hard sheet metal and a sleeve of relatively soft or duetile metal is mounted on the outer surface ofthe tubular member formed by the sections and is disposed in abutting relation to the inner flanges. The sleeve of ductile metal is tapered in thickness from end to end and is thicker at its inner end than at the other end thereof. The sleeve forms a band for holding the sections together. Further details of the invention will appear from the following description.
In the form of the invention illustrated, the shield comprises a pair of sections 10 and 11 preferably formed of relatively hard sheet metal, each section having formed at its inner end a flange 12 and at its outer end a flange 13. Vvrhen the sections are positioned one on the other as shown in Fig. 1, the flanges 13 of the two sections are disposed in the same plane and the flanges' 12 at the other end are disposed in a single plane.
'After the sections have been positioned as ,illust-rated in Fig. 1,a sleeve l5 of relatively Fig. 1 is a. sectional elevation of a .shield fr constructed lin accordance with theinvention soft 'or ductile metal is placed around the louter surface of the inner portions of the sec- ,tions in abutting relation to the flanges l2, `12. The sleeve 15 is preferably tapered in thickness from end to end, the thicker end being disposed at the inner end of the shield.
The shield illustrated is preferably eXpanded by a driven expanding member, such as a nail 18 having a diameter so proportioned to the bore of the tubular member that the shield sections will be expanded when the expandving member is driven into the shield. As
the shield. The duetile sleeve, therefore,
yserves two purposes namely, to secure the shield sections together and to provide a firm gripping engagement between the shield and the Wall opening.
The nail or expanding member 18 has a head 19 at its outer end which serves to reinforce the flange 13, 13 at the outer end of the shield.
Although one specific embodiment of the invention has been particularly shown and imposed on the outer surface of the tubular l member and abutting said flange.

An expansion shield comprising a tubular member of relatively hard metal of uniform thickness tapered from the inner end toward the outer end thereof and having a laterally projecting flange at its inner end and a sleeve of relatively soft metal tapered in thickness from end to end and superimposed on the outer surface of the tubular member and abutting the flange. j
4. An expansion shield comprising a pair of laterally expansible sections formed of sheet metal of uniform thickness, said sections being constructed and arranged to form therebetween a bore tapered from the inner end toward the outer end thereof, and a sleeve of relatively soft metal encircling said sections and securing the sections together.
