Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OF ICE.
OHAUNOEY O. PARKER, OF BROOKLYN, YORK.
IMPROVEMENT m EvEeLAssEs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 173,050, dated February 1, 187 6 application filed January 25, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GHAUNGEY O. PARKER, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Eyeglasses; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a detached view of the fastenings, showing the two connected. Figs. 3 and 4 are similar views, showing the fastening before being connected together.
This invention has relation to eyeglasses, and its object is to provide a means by which the lenses may be readily secured in the frame of the eyeglasses, whereby the necessity of employing screws, rivets, or pins are entirely avoided; and the invention therefore consists in securing to the two ends of the frame, where they join, a tongue with shoulders, and a plate with side flanges or lips, the tongue passing down between the flanges or lips, after which they are pressed inward, thereby securing the tongue from lifting out, and the shoulders upon the tongue pre veutin g it from being withdrawn,
as will be hereinafter described.
In the accom pan yingdrawings, Ais designed to represent the frame of the eyeglass, having secured thereto the hinge-spring or nose-piece B, one of said frames having the usual handle O and catch at. These parts do not differ materially from the eyeglasses of the ordinary construction, and further description is deemed unnecessary to the full understanding of my invention, which consists simply in connecting the two ends of the frame A together, which will be readily understood from the following description:
. Upon one end of the frame A is secured, by
The advantages of connecting the frames together, as above described, will readily be seen from the fact that such a fastening is much stronger than screws, and can be more easily adjusted, and the eyeglass is greatly .reduced in the cost of its manufacture, as the making and adjusting the screws requires skilled labor, while my improvement renders such labor entirely unnecessary, as the attachments can be cut or stamped out by dies and soldered on the eye-frames, when they are ready to be secured to the glass.
When it is desired to disconnect the two ends of the frame, all that is necessary is to press open the lips. The lips also form a catch to hold the frames together when folded.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The method, herein described, of connecting together the frames ofeyeglasses, consisting of the plate E, with flanges c, and the tongue D, with shoulders 12, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
. GHAUNOEY O. PARKER.
