This invention relates to a screen for a window of a closed type of motor vehicle, the general object of the invention being 'to provide a screen carrying frame which is designed to be placed in the compartment of the sash or window glass of the vehicle, with manually operated means for raising and lowering the frame.

This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts,

to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim. In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:-

Figure 1 is a fragmentary view of a portion of the interior of an automobile, showing the invention in use, parts being broken away.

Figure 2 is a section on line 22 of Figure 1. c

Figure 3 is a section on line 3-.3 of Figure 1.

Figure 4 is a view of the sprocket shaft and its casing for operating the screen.

As shown in these views, I provide a frame 4 which carries a screen 5, said frame being placed in the compartment 6 formed in the lower part of a door or body of a vehicle for accommodating the sash or glass 7. This frame is slidably mounted so that it can be raised the same as the glass 7 is raised to close the window opening, as shown in Figure 1. An elongated casing8 is fastened to the inner face of the door or body adjacent the lower edge of the window opening and a horizontal shaft 9 is journaled in said casing.

At each end of this .shaft is fastened a sprocket wheel 10, the teeth of which are adapted to engage a row of holes 11 formed in each side of the frame 4 so that as the shaft is rotated, the frame will be raised or lowered. A worm gear 11 is fastened to the central part .of the shaft and a stub shaft 12 is journaled in an enlargement 8 at the center of the casing and carries a worm 13 1 which meshes with the gear 11. The outer end of the shaft 12 projects from the enlargement and has a crank handle 14 fastened thereto.

Thus it will be seen that the crank handle 15 arranged so that it can be easily grasped by a person occupying'a seat in the vehicle so that this person can rotate the shaft which Wlll in turn rotate the shaft 9 and through the sprockets and the rows of holes 11, will raise or lower the screen frame to open or close the window.

It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.

I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.

What I claim is In combination with a door having a window opening in its upper part and a compartment in its lower part, an elongated casing attached to one face of the door below the window opening therein and having end enlargements and a central enlargement, a shaft journaled in the casing, a sprocket on each end of the shaft and arranged in the end enlargements of the casing, a transversely arranged shaft in the central enlargement, a worm on said shaft, a worm gear on the central part of the first shaft meshing with the worm, a handle on the worm shaft and a screen vertically movable-in the door and having a row of holes at each side thereof for receiving the teeth of the sprockets whereby when the first shaft is turned by theworm means and the handle, the screen will be moved from the compartment to cover the opening and vice versa by the teeth of the sprockets engaging the holes in the screen.
