UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS EUMPEEIEs, OE EASTON, I E1\n\Is rI.vA1\IIA.l
IMPROVEMENT IN SHEARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 173,010, dated February 1, 1876; application filed October 3, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS HUMPHRIES, of Easton, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and usef'nl Improvement in Shears, of which the following is -a specification In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved shears with cap-piece taken off. Fig. 2 is a top view, and Fig. 3 a vertical transverse section, of the same on the line c c, Fig. l. f I
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention will first vbe fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.
In the drawing, A represen ts the stationary blade; B, the cutting-blade, pivoted thereto, which are'both operated by sleeve-shaped handles for tingers and thumb, usedin tailors shears. The stationary blade A has a straight and broad base, on which the shears rest in upright position during use, and slide readily on the cutting-table. The side part of blade A in front of the handle is provided with a recess, a, that extends nearly down to 'the baseforming a bot-tom concavity therewith.
The cutting-blade B is pivotedto the side of stationary blade at b, and connected with its arm back of pivot b b 'v-an 'intermediate pivoted link-joint, d, wi-th the front arm of the separate handle-piece B", which swings on the rear pivot-pin 1)', so as to eXert,.by its opening and closing, a double lever action on the cutting-blade Without a change in the position of the stationary blade A. The cutting-strokes of blade B are prod ucedv` by the double pivot and link-joint with little -e'ortto the muscles of the hand, and with considerable power. The stationary blade moves along .the table Without disarranging the material to be out,
while the cutting-blade may be worked with thumb by keeping theshears in raised'position. A cap-plate, O,with top dan ge e lits closely over the side recess of the stationary blade,`
incasing thereby the lever-joint, so\ that no dust can enter,-and preventingfalso the oil used for lubricating to pass to the blades and -to the cloth, as it will collect in ,the concave bottom part of the recess. 'lhe cap plate is attached, by the pivot-pins with suitable brass heads, and by separate vfasteningscrews, to
the stationary blade, and forms with the 'blades very vnice looking, compact, and powerful shears.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim ,as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is-
1 In a tailors shears, the link, in combination with the movable blade B and the handlelever B', and to which they are jointed, as and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. The combination, with a tailors shears, constructed substantially as herein set forth, of a close oil-chamber cavity, a, formed in the iixed blade, to receive and confine the lubriv eating material for the joints of the shears.
