EVANDER MOIVER GREGG, OF MARS BLUFF, SOUTH CAROLINA.
IMPROVEMENT IN GUN-WIPERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 172,996, dated February 1, 1876; application filed January 11, 1876.
To all-whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EVANDER M. GREGG, of Mars Bluff, in the county of Marion and State of South Carolina, have invented a new and Improved Gun-Wiper; and I do hereby declare that the following is a" full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation; Fig. 2, a side elevation, partly in longitudinal section.
The invention relates to means for swabbing or wiping out a gun-barrel, so as to conveniently liberate and remove the adhering matter on the inside surface.
The invention consists in a piece of metal having at one end a socket, into which is screwed a bolt, between whose head and a flange are arranged a series of rubber disks, with spaces and washers between them. The attachment has also, at the other end, a socket, in which is fastened the lower end of the ramrod.
A represents a piece of metal, preferably round in shape, having an internally-threaded socket, a, at one end, and a second one, or some other fastening device, a), at the other. Around the entrance of opening a is located a circular flange, a. B is a screw-bolt, provided, preferably, with a broad head, b, flat on its outer face. This screw'bolt works in the socket a, and receives upon its stem the rub:
ber or otherwise flexible disks 0, that are compressed between the shoulder a and bolt-head b. Between every two of these is arranged a plain spacing-ring, D, that I preferably make of copper or other metal, or any rigid substance. The disks 0 are beveled nearand on both edges of their periphery, so that they will readily yield under pressure against the inside of the gun-barrel, and thus detach from its surface any adhering matter. The latter will accumulate between the disks, and may be afterward easily washed off. The disks can be expressed outwardly, so as to present a larger circumference, by simply screwing up the bolt into the socket a while, by removing the screw, the disks and washers may be changed for those of a larger size.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is The combination, with a bolt, B, of rod A, having threaded end socket a and circular flange a the independent flexibledisks G, and the smaller spacing-rings D, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 24th day of December, 1875.
