The present invention relates to combined braces and door guides.
More particularly the present invention relates to means applicable to railway house cars for securing the framework of the car securely together and for guiding the sliding` doors of said car. rl`he invention is particularly adaptable to wooden cars, and has the advantage that it may be readily applied to cars already in service as well as to new cars. Difficulty is encountered in wooden cars in that the vertical door posts pull away from the side sills comprising part of the framework of a house car, frequently making it necessary to adopt inadequate makeshifts to hold said framework together.
An object of the present invention is to provide combined bracing means and door guiding means which means are simple to manuso facture, inexpensive, and simple to install.
A further object is to provide combined bracing and guiding means adapted to be used in connection with both old and new cars as said cars are at present designed.
Further objects will appear as the description proceeds.

The numeral 10 indicates the side of a car, 55 and the numeral 11 indicates a sliding door. A combined brace'and door guide for the forward side of the door is indicated by the numeral 12, and a combined brace and door guide adapted to be used at the rear side 0f the doorway is indicated by the numeral 13. rlhe members 12 and 13 each embody certain features of the present invention.
rlhe numeral 14 indicates one of the side sills of the car, and the numerals 15 and 16 indicate, respectively, vertical posts or ambs dening the forward and rear edges of the doorway with which the door 11 cooperates. In service, the posts or jambs 15 and 16 fre quently pull away from their corresponding side sill 14. The present invention provides means for bracing said posts or jambs 15 and 16 in rigid relationship with the side sill 14.
Referring to Figures 2, 3 and 4, the combined brace and guiding means 12 is shown 75 in detail. Said member is of metallic construct-ion, preferably a casting, and includes an upper portion 17 adapted to be positioned along the forward face of the corresponding post 15. Said member 12 also comprises the lower portion 18 adapted to be positioned in engagement with the outer face of the cor responding side sill 14. Bolts 19H19 extending through the post 15 and the side sill 14 secure the member 12 in position. Extending inwardly from the portion 17 is the boss 2() adapted to be set into a corresponding recess in the post 15. Extending inwardlyk from Ythe portion 18, of the member 12 is a boss 20 adapted to be set into a cor- 90 responding recess in the side sill 14. Each of the bosses 20-20 is disposed in encircling relationship with a bolt 19. Extending outwardly from the portion 17 is the guide ment ber 21, which is provided with the rear- 95 wardly extending guide lip 22 adapted to receive the lower front edge portion of the door to guide .saine to its closed position. es shown :in Figure 2, the guide lip 22 will preferably 'be flared @inwardly 'the jrrurri W0 pose of piloting the door to closed position.
Referring now to Figures 5, 6 and 7 it will be noted that the combined brace and guide means 13 comprises the upper portion 23 adapted to lie in contact with the outer face of the corresponding post or jarnb 1G. The lower portion 24 is adapted to lie in Contact with the outer face of the side sill 14. p Each of the portions Q3 and 24 is provided with a boss 2O similar to the bosses 20 above rcferred to, which bosses are set into corresponding recesses in the post 16 and side sill 14. Bolts 19-19 secure the member 13 to the post 16 and side sill 14, the bosses 20-20 effectue-ily holding the post 1G and side sill 14 in rigid relationship with one another. Extending outwardly from the portion 24 of the member 13 is the guide member 25 provided with the upstanding lip 26, which is preferably flaredy outwardly at its forward and rear extremities and which guides the door 11 in its sliding movement.
Frequently the posts 15 and 16 are set into the side sill 14 by means ofinortise and Ltenen joints. Figure 8 illustrates a modification of the structure shown in Figures 5, 6 and 7 in which the tenon on the post may be dispensed with, a corresponding tenen being disposed upon the combined brace and door guidel if desired. The structure shown in Figure 8 is similar in most respects to the structure illustrated in Figures 5, 6 and 7,
but comprises an inwardly extending cupshaped portion 27. adapted to provide a socket for receiving the lower extremity of the corresponding post. The lower surface of the cup-shaped portion 17 is provided with the tenon 28 which may be set into the usual mortise i-n the side sill..
Though certain preferred embodiments of the present invention have been described in detail, many modifications will occur to those skilled in the art. It is intended to cover allY such modifications that fall within the .scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed ism 1. In combi-nation, the side sill of ahou-seA car, an upstanding post, said sill and post having recesses, and a brace and door guide having portions bolted to said siii and post 'and having portions seatedwithin saidI recesses, said brace and? door guide liaving anoutstanding portion for guiding a sliding vided with an outstanding portion adapted to guide a sliding door.
3. In an article of manufacture, a metal member comprising portions adapted to lie against the outer faces of a side sill and a door post of a house car, said portions hav ing bosses projecting therefrom adapted to tit within corresponding recesses in said sill y and post, said metal member being provided with holes for the reception of bolts for holdingsaid member in rigid relationship with said sill and post, said member being provided with an outstanding portion adapted to guide a sliding door, certain of .said bolt holes being located within said bosses.
4. Means for rigidly securing together a side sill and a door post of a housecar comprising a metal member having portions adapted tolie against the outer faces of said sill and post, said member having a socket portion on one sidev thereof for receiving. the extremity of said post and having on. its other sidel an outstanding door guiding portion..

Means for rigidly securing together a side sil-l and a door post of a house car comprising a metal member having portions adapted to lie against the forward faces of said sill and post, said member having a socket portion von` one side thereof for receiving the extremity of said: post and having on its other side an. outstandingdoor guiding portion, said ,flat portions having bosses upon the same side of said member as said socket portion adapted to t into corresponding recesses ink said side sill and post. y

Means for rigidly securing together a side sill and. a door post of a housecar comprising a metal member having portions adapted to lie against the forward faces of said sill and post,`v said member having a socket portion on one side thereof for receiving the extremity of said post, said socket portion having a tenon-k on its under side and rigid therewith adapted to lit into a correspondingl mortise inthe upperface of said side sill. g
7. Means for rigidly securing. together a side sill and a door post of a house car, comprising, a metal member having portions adapted `tolie against the forward faces of said sill and post, said portionsbeing provided with apertures, bosses surrounding certain of said apertures in each of said portions and adapted to be mortised into corresponding recesses in said sill and post, bolts in said apertures and bosses extending through said sill and post in a direction transverse to the length of said post, and an outstanding door guide having a portion extending in the direction of the length of said ost.
8. n combination, the side sill of a house car, an upstanding post secured thereto de- CJI ining the rear edge of a doorway, a sliding door 'for said doorway, and an integral metal member secured to said post and having a bracket adapted to cooperate With the outer side of said door for door guiding and re taining purposes, said portion Secured to said post being provided With apertures for receiving securing bolts, which apertures are disposed behind said door When said door is in closed position.
9. In combination, the side sill of a house car, an upstanding post, a sliding door, and a combined brace and door guide having portions bolted to said sill and post to per forni the biasing functions of said brace and door guide, said door when in closed position being disposed in protective re1ationship with the portion of said brace and door guide bolted to said post, said brace and door guide having an outstanding portion for guiding and retaining said door.
