INVENTOR ATTORN EY WITNESS:
Patented Sept. 24, 1929 PATENT ,OFFICE WILLIAM M. EDGE, OF MORRIS, ILLINOIS DUMP-BODY HINGE Application filed January 9, 1928. Serial No. 245,544.
An object of the invention comprehends supporting plates carried upon the rear cross member of the chassis.
Another object of the invention contemplates attaching plates mounted upon the truck body.
A further object of the invention embodles ears carried upon the supporting plates adapted for pivotal connection with the attaching plates upon and from which the body is swung.
More specifically stated, the body is held against lateral swinging movement when swung to occupy a loading position.
With the above and other objects in View, the invention further consists of the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawlngs and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention as applied for use.
Figure 2 is a similar view with the body shifted to occupy a dumping position.
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view of the attaching plates.
Figure 4 is a top plan View of the supporting plates.
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on lme 55 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character indicates generally a chassis frame having a rear cross member 11 which in this instance isshown as being of channel form.
The primary object of the invention is to swing a truck body, such as indicated at 12, from the rear cross member 11 to occupy the positions as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings. The body is provided with beams 13 generally supported upon the up per sides of the chassis.
In carrying out the invention, I provide supporting plates 14 having depending portions 15 at the ends thereof engageable with the sides of the cross beam 11. Bolts 16, passed through the supporting plates 14, are adapted to anchor the same upon the cross member 11. Ears 17, upstanding at inclinations from the upper sides of the supporting plates 14: and at inclinations rearwardly thereof, are adapted to be interposed between attaching plates 18 carried upon the opposed sides of the beams 13. Fins 20 establish connection between the ears 17 and the upper sides of the supporting plates 14 between the bolts 16, the purpose of which will be presently apparent. Pivot pins or bolts 21 are extended through the attaching plates 18 and ears 17 to provide a swinging mounting for the truck body upon the chassis.
Spacing plates 22, carried upon the under sides of the beams 13 and between the attaching plates 18, are provided with cut out portions 23 adapted to receive the fins 20 of the ears 17 when the body 12 occupies a normal position. Said plates are adapted to seat upon the upper sides or heads of the bolts 16 and to engage said fins in the manner set forth.
By this simple arrangement and attachment of bodies, truck chassis may be easily converted into dump trucks which will effectively discharge the load thereof when swung upon the ears 17 as best illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawings.
The spacing plates 22, due to their engagement with the fins 20 as shown in the dotted line position as illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawings, will prevent lateral shifting movementof the body upon the ears and thus relieve strain upon the ears when the truck makes turns in roadways or travels over rolling country.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction, and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is:
In combination with a chassis and a body, of attaching plates carried upon the body, supporting plates mounted upon the truck chassis in 1uxtaposition to the attaching plates, ears carried by the supporting plates having pivotal connection with the adjacent a... "sum.
portions of the attaching plates, fins establishing connection between the supporting plates and ears, and spacing plates having connection at their ends with the attaching plates having cut-out portions to receive the fins of the ears when the body occupies a normal position.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
WILLIAM M. HOGE.
