Our invention relates to new and useful improvements in a cloth cutter and has for one of its objects to improve the general construction of such devices to produce a compact and strong although light structure.
Another object of the invention is to produce a cloth cutter or more particularly a combined guide and guard from suitable material, such as metal with all the parts fashioned into a unitary structure.
A further object of the invention is to so construct a device of the kind mentioned as to produce an enlarged guide portion, a portion of which in connection with a reduced section acts as a guard for a circular knife or cutter.
A still further object of the invention is to form slots in opposite walls of the guard for the reception of the thread by which buttons are sewn to garments or other articles whereby said thread may be cut for the removal of the buttons with the same knife or cutter that is used for severing the cloth.
l/l/hile we will describe the invention in connection with its use as a cloth cutter, it is to be particularly understood that the same is applicable to other cutting machines used in operations on other substances, such as paper and sheet rubber.
It is quite common for guards of this kind to be placed over cutting wheels with the lower edge spaced from a table or cloth supporting surface whereby the cloth may be passed underneath of it for engagement with the cutter, but we have found that in cutting garments having bodies which are closed lengthwise as well as the sleeves of such garments, it is ditlicult to keep them opened up or extended during the coacting operations, thus making said operations slower' than necessary and sometimes producing bias and uneven edges.
The present invention contemplates overcoming the foregoing difliculties and we have therefore provided a relatively large guide over which the garments may be pulled and 'which will therefore cause said garments to be spread out, extended or opened up prior to 'coming in contact with th-e cutter.

ln order that those skilled in the art to which this invent-ion appertains may understand how to make-and use the same, we will describe its construction in detail, referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings forming a part ofv this application, in which Fig. l, is a longitudinal sectional view of a cloth cutter constructed in accordance with our invention, a portion thereof being left in elevation to more clearly illustrate details of construction and showing the combined guide and guard associated with a circular cutter or disc knife and a supporting surface which may be the top of a table.

ln carrying out our invention as herein embodied, the combined guide and guard is represented as a whole by the reference character 6 and this is produced from suitable material, such as metal preferably aluminum, as a unitary structure including a base plate 7, which is reduced in thickness to provide an extension 8 extending from the inner end of the upper portion of the base plate so that when the device is mounted upon a support 9, such as the top of a table with the base plate resting on the upper or supporting surface, the extension 8 will be spaced from said supporting surface.
Above the extension 8 extends the circular guard l0 of such size and width as to provide a chamber 1l into which projects a portion of a circular knife or disc cutter' l2, said circular knife being mounted in any suitable manner beneath the support 9 and extending through an aperture 13 in said support.
Frein the rear portion of the guard 10 projects a guide 11i of any desirable cross sectional contiguration and tapering toward its outer or free end and the base of said guide is preferably the same width as the extension so that their surfaces blend into each other.
.As mit be obvious by reference to and 5, the guide 14 is considerably larger than the guard 10 so that articles, Asuch as wearing apparel, when slipped over the guide will be open-ed up, extended or straightened out prior to being broughtinto contact with the circular knife.
By reference to Fig. 2, it will be obvious that the flat portion 15 is like an extension of the top of the guard and by referring to Fig. 1, it will be readily noted that the under face of the guide coincides with the bottom surface of the extension 8, and therefore said extension being spaced from the supporting surface, the guide is also so spaced, thus providing a passageway for the goods to reach the circular cutter.
ln the side walls of the guard toward the front thereof are formed two slots 16 and 17, each of which has beveled edges 18 and one of these slots, as 16, is preferably larger or beveledv to a greater extent than the other. These slots are of a length sufcient to pass the edge of the circular collar in order that a thread by which a button is sewn to an Larticle may be passed into the slots and brought inte Contact with the knife for cutting said thread and by making one of the slots, as 17, smaller than the other, the goods to which the buttons is sewn will not be Adrawn into the space receiving the cutter but the slot 16 being'larger, the eye or the conveX portion of a button may be readily acc-onnnodated.
The rear edge of the base plate is preferably beveled in opposite-directions from the center as indicated at 19 to assist in clearing the space between the guard, supporting surface and cutter of pieces of thread, lint or other material that might otherwise accumulate.
The extension 8 and the lower surface of the guide 14 are positioned relative to the under surface of the base plate 7 so that when the device is mounted, the space between the guide, guard and supporting surface is large enough 'to receive the goods to be cut but so small as to prevent the insertion of an operators linger thereinto, thereby positively protecting the operator from injury due to carelessness or forgetfulness.
The operation of the device is as follows A person standing in front of the device which is attheleft hand side of the illustration in Fig. 1 places the material under the free end of the guide, and moves it in the direction of the arrow a and where said material is of general tubular formation, as the sleeves of garments, said material is pulled up over the guide until the portion entering the passageway between the supporting surface and said guide comes in contact with the circular knife or cutter revolving in the direction of the arrow W2. During this operation, the guide will cause thematerial to be opened up or extended se that the part entering the passageway will follow a straight line toward the cutter.
lllhere the material to be cut is a garment or other article having buttons or like fastenings thereon, these are first removed by entering the thread between the fastener and the article to which it is sewn in the slots 1G and 17 until brought in contact with. the critter' and by always placing the buttons at one side of the device, said buttons may be permitted to fall into a suitable receptacle.
Gf course we do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction as herein shown, as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of our invention.
Having thus fully described our iin/ention, what we claim as new and useful is 1. A device of the kind mentioned comprising an integral structure including a base, a hollow guard projecting from the rear end of said plate with the lower edge of said guard spaced above the under surface of the base, said guard adapted to enclose a portion of a cutting instrument and a guide projecting from the rear end of the guardwith its lower surface in the same plane as the lower edge of the guard while the upper surfaces of said guard and guide blend into each other from which point the upper surface of said guard is inclined downwardly toward its outer end and the cross sectional area of the guide being considerably greater than that of the guard.
2. The structure set forth in claim 1 wherein the guard has a pair of parallel slots in opposite walls for guiding the attaching threads which secure fastening devices to articles into the cutter.
3. A device of the kind disclosed comprising a base plate, an extension proj ecting from the rear end of said base plate of less thickness than the base plate with their upper surfaces in the saine plane thereby producing an off-set between the extension and base plate, said off-set portion being tapered from its transverse center, a hollow circular guard open at its lower end and project-ing above the extension and of relatively less width than said extension, said guard adapted to partially enclose a circular cutter, said guard having parallel slot-s formed in opposite walls thereof and projecting inwardly from the periphery and a guide projecting from the rea-r ends of the guard and extension and of the same width as the latter with the lower surface of said guide in the saine horizontal plane as the lower surface of the extension while the upper surface of said guide is inclined from its outer end toward and blends with the upper surface of the guard for the purpose stated.
4. rlhe structure set forth in claim 3 wherein slots in the guard are provided. with beveled edges to permit the positioning of the articles being operated upon in close proximity to the inner surfaces of the guard.
