FOLDING CHAIR CONSTRUCTION Filed Jan. 11, 1928 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 BY MA TTORNEY.
Patented Sept. 24, 1929 PATENT OFFICE WILLIAM C. RAS'IE'ITER, or rear WAYNE, INDIANA FOLDING-CHAIR CONSTRUCTION Application filed January 11, 1928.
This invention relates to improvements in folding chair construction in which a seat is pivotally mounted in a collapsible frame, and which seat is so disposed as to be moved into position for use automatically when the legs of the frame are extended. The Object of the improvement is to provide a fixture for each side of the seat frame to form a bearing therefor and which will re-enforce the frame at the point where the seat rod extends through, and which fixture also forms a bear ing for the member by which the seat frame is tilted. A further object is to provide a bearing fixture for each side of the seat frame which will also serve as a securing means for the seat in connection with the seat frame.
These objects are accomplished by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation in section showing a folding chair in which the invention is incorporated;
Fig. 2 is a detail fragmentary assembly view of a chair in folded position with the invention applied thereto, parts being upon an enlarged scale;
Fig. 3 is a similar view of the parts shown in Fig. 2, but in extended position for use, and Fig. 4 is a rear view of the chair.
The characters appearing in the description refer to Darts shown in the drawings and designated t ereon by corresponding characters.
The folding chair comprises a main frame constituting a back 1 and forelegs 2, there being a seat rod 3 with its ends rigidly secured in'the corresponding legs 2. A pair of rear legs 4 are provided at their upper ends on the rod 3 respectively adjacent the corresponding front legs 2, there being a spacer 5 between each front and rear leg on said rod.
A seat frame 6 is mounted upon the rod 3, said rod extending through each side of said seat frame, and between each rear leg and the corresponding side of the seat frame 6 is positioned on said rod a dog 7 having a jaw 8, there being a spacer 9 between the dog and said frame, and another spacer 10 between said dog and the adjacent rear leg 4. Each dog has a tail 11 that is rigidly se- Serial N 0. 245,912.
cured to the corresponding rear leg 4 so that as said rear legs are turned upon the seat rod the dogs will be moved accordingly.
A particular feature of the invention consists in a fixture for the seat frame, which fixture consists of a metal plate 12 having along one edge a flange 13 that extends throughout its length, which flange has made therein spurs 14 and 15 that project respectively from the opposite faces of said flange. The plate 12 has at its edge opposite said flange an angular extension 16. The fixture is applied to the chair construct ne fix ure on the inner face of each side of the seat frame, its flange extending into the seat groove 17 in said seat frame, and the angular extension projecting beneath the frame against the lower face thereof. The seat rod 3 extends through each fixture and said fixtures bear upon said rod. The spurs 14 and 15 in the flange of the fixture extend respectively into the seat 18 when the latter is inserted in the groove 17, and into the seat frame so that the seat is thereby held securely in its frame.
The extension 16 of the fixture forms a bear- F ing for the jaw 8 of the corresponding dog with which it has contact, there being a slight indentation 19 in said extension in which the upper edge of the aw of said dog seats when the chair is in extended position.
The rear legs 1 are connected with the back 1 by a corresponding pair of arms 20, each. arm being pivoted at its upper end to the corresponding side of the back by a pivot 21, the lower end of the arm having an elongated slot 22 therein through which slot extends a cross rod 23 that is fixed in the rear legs at a point spaced from their lower ends. In this manner said arms and rear legs have limited sliding relation. The arms 20 are connected by a cross piece 24 to form a stop for the rear end of the seat frame with which the seat frame has contact when the chair is extended.
A brace member 25 is arranged upon the seat rod and cross rod 23 to add rigidity to the rear leg structure. Also, a back rest 26 is secured as its upper end in the back 1 and has sliding connection at its lower end with the arms 20.
In utilizing the invention the chair is folded by tilting the seat frame upwardly into the frame, the rear end of the seat 18 hearing against the brace member 25, causes the rear leg structure and the arms attached thereto to fold in between the front legs. When the chair is unfolded the extensions 16 of the plates 12, as the seat frame is moved into extended position, bear against the jaws of the dogs, which causes unfolding movement of the rear legs and corresponding movement of the arms.
The fixtures thus applied to the seat frame and seat strength the seat frame and secure the seat therein, as well as prevent marring of the seat frame by the jaws of the dogs.
What I claim is 1. A fixture for a folding chair structure, which structure has a relatively movable seat and legs, said fixture consisting of a plate having a flange along one edge, provided with oppositely disposed spurs, and having an angular extension contiguous with its edge opposite said flange, said spurs having engagement in said seat, and said extension forming a contact bearing on the bottom of the seat frame for the leg structure.
2. A fixture for a folding chair structure, which structure has a seat frame and seat positioned in the frame, and folding legs in pivotal connection with said frame, said fixture consisting of a plate having a flange along one edge provided with oppositely disposed spurs, and having an angular extension contiguous with its edge opposite said flange, said spurs having engagement in said seat and frame, and said extension forming a contact bearing on the bottom of said frame for the leg structure.
A fixture for a folding chair structure, consisting of a plate having a flange along one of its edges which flange is provided with upwardly and downwardly projecting spurs, and an angular extension contiguous with the edge of said plate opposite said flange.
1. A fixture for a folding chair structure, which structure includes a seat-frame and pivoted folding legs, and a member on said folding legs for tilting the seat; and a fixture consisting of a plate fixed upon said seat-frame, forming a bearing for the pivotal connection between the seat and legs, and being provided with a lateral extension forming a contact bearing beneath the seat for said member.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
