To allwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES M. JAY, of the city, county, and State ot' New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machinery for Cutting Thin Metal into 'Narrow' panying drawings forming part of the same.
My invention relates to a machine designed to cut thin metal sheetsv into long narrow nation of devices for the purpose hereinafter particularly described. V
Figure l is an elevation of a machine containing iny improvements, presenting a rear view of the machine. Fig. 2 is a plan, Fig. 3 a front elevation, and Fig. 4 a side elevation, ofthe same.
A is a frame or'hollow pillar, npouwhich the moving parts of my machine are mounted. B B are revolving shear-cutters, mounted on shafts a a, which have their bearings in the head-block G, secured upon the top of the pillar A. b b are spur-gears on the said shafts, whereby the latter are geared to run together.v D is a spool or reel formed of two disks fixed on a shaft, which has itsbearings in a bracket, E, secured upon the head-block C. F is the driving-pulley, fixed 'on the shaft a; and F', a loose pulley. G G are rods designed to support the metal and present it tothe cutters. They. are xedin brackets c c c c, secured upon the head-blocks. These rods are Ahollowiind provided with slotted openings cl d', extending from their outer ends to the H H are pressure-guides, eachhaving a `short shaft or stem extending through the -slots d d', respectively, into the hollow rods G G. To the stems of these guides are Aattached cords, which run through the rods and over pulleys c c at therear ends of the rods, with weights f f' attached to their ends, whereby the guidesare pressed against the outer edge of the -metal while the latter is being cut, thus forcing the metalaga-inst the gage g. In place of the cord and'weights, springs may be used. The gage g is'secured to and made'adjustable on a bar, Y k, by screw-bolts n a', which are fastened to bar, with nuts on either side of it. j is a hinged guide, forked at its outer end to embrace the nished with set-screws l l to adjust the guide accurately to the reel.` It is hinged, as shown in Fig. 2, in order that it may be thrown up out of thc way when the reel is to be'removed from its shaft. 'Motion is given to the `reel or bobbin D from the shaft of the. cutter Bby a band, s, running from a pulley, p, on the latter to a pulley, g, on the shaft ofthe reel.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A machine for cutting sheet metal into strips, wherein are combined the cutters B B', the rods 'G G, and the pressureguides H H',

2. The combination, in a machine for cutting sheet-metal yinto strips, of the spool D and the hinged pose specified.
