RANGE BASE CABINET INVENTOR FranK F. Forshee ATTORNEY Patented.Sept. 17, 1929 UNITED STATES PATENT @FFICE FRANK F. FORSHEE, OF MANSFIELD, GI-IIO, ASSIGNOR TO "WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC 86 MANUFACTURING COMPANY, A GORPGRATION O]? P. QISYLVANIA RANGE-BASE CABINET Application filed July 14,
My invention relates to electric ranges and particularly to range-base cabinets.
An object of my invention is to provide a base cabinet for an electric range that shall embody a storage compartment and a foodwarming compartment.
Another object of my invention is to provide a closed casing which shall constitute a base and support for an electric range.
Another object of my invention is to provide a range-base cabinet extending substantially to the floor and embodying a toe space at the front portion thereof.
In practicing my invention, I provide a substantially closed casing comprising corner posts, sheet-metal panels and sliding doors to fit beneath and suport an electric range.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a View, in front elevation, of a device embodying my invention and associated with an electric range, parts being broken away, and,
Fig. 2 is a view thereof, in side elevation, portions being broken away to show inner parts thereof.
An electric range 11 comprises a stove portion 12 and an oven portion 13 located in sideby-side relation on a platform represented by a base band 14 extending around the range structure at the bottom thereof.
The stove portion comprises a platform 15 having suitable electric heating units 16 supported thereby. The oven portion 13 comprises the usual plurality of side, top, back and bottom panels 17 together with a door 18. The stove portion has a back panel 19 and a shelf 21 thereabove, the shelf being located at such height that its top is in the same plane as the top of the oven 13. A top panel 22 extends the entire width of the range 11 and is provided, at its upper corners, with trim members 23, in a manner well known in the art. An outer ornamental supporting bracket 24 extends between the stove top 15 and the shelf 21.
the stove top 15. A thermostat 26 is mounted at the front of the door 18 and controls an electromagnetic circuit breaker indicated generally by the actuating handles 27, also located below the stove portion 15 In general, the range structure hereinbefore described, is a standard range, with the exception that the usual supporting legs have been removed therefrom.
A range-base cabinet 28 is located below, and in supporting relation to, the range 11 and comprises a closet compartment 29 and a warming compartment 31 located in side-byside relation and separated by an intermediate sheetmetal panel 32.
The cabinetconiprises sheet-metal wall panels, at the top, side, back and bottom thereof, which are designated generally by the numeral 33. Any desired or suitable construction of the panels 33 may be employed but,
usually and preferably, they are made of thin sheet metal and painted or enamelled in color to agree with the finish on the range 11.
The panels are suitably secured, at their edges, to upright corner posts 3 1 constituted F by angle bars of relatively light metal which extend beyond the top of. the cabinet 28. as is shown more particularly in Fig. 1 of the drawing, in order that they may iuterfit with the frame of the range 11 and, more particularly, with the base band 14 thereof. An upper base 35 is provided on the cabinet which is made of relatively heavy metal strap and extends around the front and part of the sides of the cabinet. A lower base band 36 is provided at the bottom of the closet and warming compartments. these base bands serving also as ornamental trim members.
Relatively narrow side panels 37 and a back panel 38 are provided below the two compart ments hereinbefore described, the front edge of the panels 37 being of arcuate shape, as shown more particularly in 2 of the drawing. This construction provides an open space 39 below the closet, and warming compartments constituting a toe space therebelow.
Each of the two compartments is provided with sliding doors, numbered, respectively, 11 and 12 in 1 of the drawings. Door 41,
Cir
closing the closet compartment which is located at the left-hand side of the cabinet, may he slid to the right, and door 42, closing the warming compartment, may be slid to the left to permit of access to the respectiv compartments. Suitable guides are provided at the front of the cabinet, at the top and bottom portions thereof, to guide the doors.
The warming compartment has an inner housing located therein, as is shown more particularly in Fig. 2 of the drawings, to provide a back space 43 for a purpose to be hereinafter specified. The housing comprises a back panel 44, a top panel 45 and side panel 46 which cooperate with the intermediate panel 32 to constitute a housing, open at the front thereof, and closed by the door 42. A plurality of ledges 47 are secured to the panels -82 and 46, respectively, to support a grid frame 48 upon which food to be warmed may be laced.
l t the bottom portion of the housing, here inbefore described, is provided a member 49 of inverted dish-shape which is secured to a support constituted by ledges 51, the member 49 being, in effect, an auxiliary housing and consisting of a metal sheet bent to provide depending side-wall portions, as shown more particularly in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
A heating unit is supported from the upper wall portion of member 49 and comprises a grooved refractory member 52 having a suitable resistor member 53 located in the groove. A bafile plate 54 is supported above the member 52 which is held by a suitable bolt 55, seated in a small depression in the top wall of member 49. A switch 56 is located within the member 49 and supported from the front Wall portion thereof, having an actuating handle extending through the opening in the front wall to permit of actuation by an oper ator when the door 42 has been slid toward the left, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
The member 49 is provided with a plurality of openings 57 in its front wall portion and with a plurality of similar openings in the top portion thereof, in order that air may circulate through the member 49 past the heating unit and through or around the inside of the warming compartment 31.
The device embodying my invention thus provides a substantially closed base tobe located below and to support an otherwise standard electric range, embodying parts inter-fitting with the bottom platform of the range and embodying, at its bottom portion, construction providing a toe space for an operator using the range. The device embodying my invention further provides a cabinet comprising a closet compartment and a warming compartment, the latter being provided with a manually controllable heating unit to warm the air in the compartment and, therefore, any food placed therein.
Various modifications may be made in the device embodying my invention without departing from the spirit and scope thereof, and I desire that only such limitations shall be placed thereon as are imposed by the prior art or are set forth in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a range-base cabinet, the combination with a plurality of panels constituting the side, bottom and back walls of said cabinet, and means comprising a range located on the cabinet to constitute a cover member for the cabinet, of a panel extending laterally of the cabinet to divide the same into two compartments, means in one of said compartments cooperating with said laterally extending panel to constitute an openfront housing therein, heating means in the housing adjace it to the bottom thereof, and a single door for closing both said open-front housing and one of said compartments.
2. In a range-base cabinet, the combination with a plurality of panels constituting the side, bottom and back walls of said cabinet, means comprising an electric range located on the cabinet to constitute a top closure for the cabinet, and supply-circuit conductors in said range, of a panel extending laterally of the cabinet to divide the same into two compartments, a side, back and top panels in one of said compartments cooperating with said laterally-extending panel to constitute an open-front housing in said one compartment, the back panel being spaced from the back wall of the cabinet, electric heating means at the bottom portion of and within the housing, electric conductors extending from said heating means to the supply-circuit conductors bet-ween said housing back panel and the back wall of the cabinet, and a single door closing both the one compartment and the open-front housing.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name this 22nd day of June, 1927.
FRANK F. FORSHEE.
