Description

H. D. COLEMAN. I REVERSIBLE MILL-STONE AND SPINDLE.
Patented Feb.1, 1876.
Wl-TNEEEEE N. PETERS, PH "En, WASHINGTON. D. c.F
UNITEE`A STATES PATENT OFFICE.l 1
HAMILTON D. GOLEMAN, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
IMPRovEMENT IN REVERSIBLE M'ILLsToNEs AND SPINDLES.`
Speciication forming part of Letters Patent No. 172,847, dated February 1, 1876 application iled v n January 5, 1876.l
To all whom it may concern.- v
Beit known thatl, HAMILTON DUDLEY COLEMAN, of Newk Orleans, in the county of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have in vented a new and valuable Improvement in Reversible Millstone and Shaft; and I do. hereby declare that the following is a full', clear, and eX- act description ofthe construction and operation of the salme, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specitication, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a top-plan view of my invention. F ig'. 2 is a plan view of the under side. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section of a stone with my i improved spindle attached. y rlhis invention has relation to millstones and millstone-spindles; and consists ina millstone dressed upon both sides, instead of one side, as in the millstones heretofore used, the object being to render the same capable of accomplishing double the amountof workl without the neces sity ot' re-dressing the stone-an advantage which is considered of great importance where parties using a mill are not possessed of the facilities or having the experience required to properly dress a nlillstone.
My invention further consists of a reversible spindle capable of being used either with a millstone dressed upon one orboth sides, the object being to increase the sgrvice of the spindle to double the service of those now in use having a single foot without the necessity of repairing them.
In the drawing, A is designed to represent a millstone, which may be of any suitable form 4and material, and is dressed upon both sides,
either alike or differently, as may .beV desired, which, in the latter case, will admit of the stone i being employed in grinding different articles Without injury to each other. The spindle, as represented at B, may he rigidly connected to the stone by any of the well-known methods, 'and may be of any suitable length and form, and having upon both ends a foot, a. As thev lower end or foot ofthe spind le becomes worn, and the `temper destroyed, it.has proved very Adifficult to properly repair it, while by the employment of a reversible spindle twice the amount of service 'is rendered'without the necessity ofk being repaired.
.I do not wish to be understood as confining myself to any particular form of stone, or any particular form of dress; and it may be applied to both bed-stonesmand runnerstones,77 or either of them independent of the other 5 andI further desire it to be understood that my invention is applicable to a top-runner, mill as Wellas an under-runner mill,
both as to the reversible stone and the reversi.-`
ble spindle. i
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desireto secureby Letters Patent, is-
1. A millstone dressed upon both sides, substantially as and for the purpose speeied.
2. A reversible spindle for millston'es, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
' 3. T he combination, with a reversible millstone dressed upon both sides, ot' a reversible spindle, substantially as and for the purpose v described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
HAMILTON DUDLEY COLEMAN. Witnesses: y l x ANDREW HERO, Jr., P. A. UoNANT. l
