This invention relates to holders and means for retaining paper sheets thereon.
Devices of thisjcharacter are a necessary convenience where numerous thin sheets of material are to be held in orderly arrangement, such for instance as papers, either loose and unconfined or connected in pad form, such as calendars,memorandum pads, lists, bills, etc, but as such sheetsare usually sub ject to change in number, and consequently their combined thickness, by addition of new sheets and removal of those which have been used or become obsolete, as in the case of a calendar,provision should be made to adjust the clamping means to accommodat such varying conditions.
One of the objectsof the present invention is to provide means whereby a spring clamping device may be conveniently raised and lowered relative to the plate support on which the sheetsrest, so that a few sheets may be held as firmly as a far greater number.
A further feature is in the provision of a pad support possessing unusualmerit in its design and structure whereby strength, economy in material and neatness in appearance are secured.
These important objects are accomplished by the novel design, arrangement and combination of parts, hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming an essential portion of this disclosure, andin which Figure 1 is a perspective view looking from the outer side and rear end of apad support as made in accordance with the invention, showing its application to a thick pad.

Fitting the panel 11, and level with the under surface of the sub-base plate 10, is a plate 13 having depressions 14: suited to reeeive the prongs '12, which are entered through openings 15 at the outer ends of the depressions 14 and are afterwards turned and upset to fill the same smoothly, holding the plates rigidly in fixed relation. 1 I
Integral with the ends of the plate 13 are outstanding right angular brackets 16, their rear edges extending outwardly beyond the corresponding edge of the plate, and formed in the brackets, adjacent their rear edges, are longitudinal slots 17, straight'at the back and having in their front edges a series of slightly undercut notches 17 17 17.

An upper baseplate 20 is shaped. in contour to the sub-base 10, uponwhich its depressed margin 21 isseated, the inturned edges 22 of a felt fabric intervening, this fabric enveloping the edges of the sub-base 10 and extending completelyover its entire outer area, constituting a cushion surface 23 to prevent' abrasion of whateverthe pad support may rest upon. a i
The plate 20 has narrowlongitudinal slots 24; neatly fitting the brackets 16 which are first passed through the slots 11" in theplate 10, thence the slots 24, theplate 20being rigidly held to the sub-base plate 10 by rivets 25 passed through openings 26 in the plate 20 and corresponding openings 27 in the plate 10, these latter openings being formed in raised nipples 28 in the plate. these openings receiving the rivet heads so that'no projection interferes with the felt cushion 23.
The paper pad X is pressed against the level surface of the plate 20 by a clamping member 30, preferably curved convexly to present spaced contacting edges disposed longitudinally in the direction of the length of the pad, the clamping members being integral with an angular down-reaching plate connection 31 leading to a fiat table 32.
Reaching rearwardly from the element 32 are wings 33, their upper, downwardly ininclined upper edges having reentrantly turned, inbent hooks 34, and in their semicircularly curved ends are openings 35. 1
Another sheet metal frame member 36 is curled to produce a tube 37 at one of its edges, suited to fit between the brackets 16 and headed pins 38 tightly driven into the tube ends after passing through the slots 17 in which the pins are freely movable.
The opposite edge of the'member 36 is curled outwardly to form a guard 39, further on explained, and extending forwardly'from the ends of the member 36 are plate levers 4E0 engageable closely adjacent withinthe wings 33 and containing openings d1 registrable with the wing openings A tube 42 is held in alinement with the openings 41 by headed pins 43 passing impinge on the element 31, causing the clamping member 30 topress firmly on papers X.
When the clamping member and its unitary members have pivoted on the pins l3 until the leverstO engage the loops 34;, further clamping effect is arrested and it be comes desirable to move the pivots 43 and 38 from the outer notchesl8 and 17 to the intermediate notches 18 and 17 and ultimately to the lowermost notches 18 and 17 in order to maintain a substantially uniform pressur on the sheets remaining on the plate 20.
Shifting of the pivots is readily accomplished by drawing the same outwardly into the slots 18 and 17 respectively and transferring to the other notches as required, and it will be noted that the shape of the rear notches is such as to prevent inadvertent movement, which is also guarded against by the projections 19. 7
Obviously the clamping member 30 is released by applying sufficient pressure to overcome the tension of the spring elementsin the usual manner;
'From the foregoing it will be seen that a simple device for this purpose has been disclosed in the preferred form of its embodiment, but it is not desired to restrict the details to the exact construction shown, it being obvious that changes, not involving the exercises of invention, may be made without conflicting with the scope of the appended claims. 7 7
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as newand desired to secure by Letters Patent, is r 1. A pad holder having a surface to receive a pad, a spring actuated clamping member to press the pad against the surface, an adjusting member on said surface, and means removably secured to said clamping member to adjustably'position said clamping member in said adjusting'member relatively to said surface.
2. A pad holder having a surface to receive a pad, a spring actuated clamping member to press the pad against the surface, means to-arrest the action of said clamping member at a definite stage in its movement, and means for raising and lowering said clamping member by stages with respect to said surface.
3. A pad holder comprising a pad support, brackets at one end of said support having pairs of stepped notches, a spring impelled clamping member to confine a pad upon the support, and means removably secured to said clamping member for securing said clamping member in any of the pairs of notches selectively.
4. A paid holder comprising'a pad support, brackets on said support provided with pairs of spaced parallel slots and notches in the edges of the slots, a frame, a clamping 111G111, ber carried by said frame, pivots secured to said frame slidablein said slots and selectively engageable in said notches to position said frame and clamping member relatively to said pad support, and means on said frame to actuate said clamping member.

A pad holder comprising a base plate having a raised panel, a plate fitting said panel, interlocking means cooperating between said panel and plate, slotted brackets integral at the ends of said plate, a support plate through which saidbrackets extend, the base and support plates being riveted together, a clamping memberfor the pad, and means, for adjusting said clamping member in the slots of said bracket.
7. A pad holder comprising a base plate having a raised panel, a plate fitting said panel, interlocking means cooperativing between said panel and plate, slotted brackets integral at the ends of said plate, a support plate through which said brackets extend, the base and support plates being riveted together, a felt sheet below said base plate, the

edges of the felt sheet being interposedly clamped between the edges of said plate, a spring actuated clamping member to retain a pad on said support plate, and means in the slots of said brackets to adjust the operative height of said clamping member relative to said support plate.
