Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..-
PHILONAS PATTYSON, OF PLEASANT VIEW, KANSAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SULKY-PLOWS. I
Specification formingpart of Letters Patent No. 172,825, dated February 1,1876; application filed October 26, 1875.
To all whom it may concern: A
Be it known that I, PHILONAS PATTYSON, of Pleasant View, in the county of Cherokee and State of Kansas, have invented certain consists in the'construction and arrangement of the-devices for connecting and adjusting the plow to the sulky, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings, Figure l is a longitudinal section, and Fig. 2 a plan view, of a sulky-plow embodying my invention. Figs. 3 and 4 are modifications of certain parts thereof.
A A represent the wheels placed upon the ends of the axle B. D I is the frame, with tongue 0. G is the seat, and G G the seatsupporting arms.
The rear end of the tongue 0 is held to the axle B by a clip, b.
On the tongue is secured a forked standard, a, in which a lever, F, is pivoted, the rear end of said lever being angular, as'shown in Fig. 2, and passed through a vertical slotted standard,f, having one side notched and the lever pressed into the same by a spring, f.
The front end of the lever F is forked, and straddles, and is pivoted to a vertical bar, E, which passes through a slot in the tongue.. This bar has at its ends fbrward-projecting ears, through which is passed a rod, 0, bearing against a grooved pulley, 0 for support.
At the lower end of the rod c is swiveled a coupling, 6, constructed as shown in Fig. 1,
so that one or two plows may be coupled thereto. In the drawing I have shown only one plow fastened to the coupling, but two plows may the lower end of a rod, H, which passes up through 'a staple, 0, in the rear end of the tongue 0. This rod is formed with a hook, h, so that the plow may be held up by simply raising the rod and suspending the hook h on said staple c.
The bar E may be formed with cogs in its rear edge, and operated by means of a cogged arm, 2', as shown in Fig. 3, said cogged arm being then pivoted to a ratchet-plate, g, and operated by a lever, F, having an ordinary spring-pawl, j m, connected -by a rod, is, with a thumb-piece, Z,- or a straight standard or plain bar, E, may be used to be operated by the elbow-lever F, and the same pawl and ratchet device used.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and'desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The bar E, having perforated ears E, the
swiveled post 0, with its clevis device 0, and the friction-pulley e, in combination with the angular lever F, or its equivalent, and with the plow-beam and frame, all constructed substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I herewith aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
