CALCULATING MACHINE.
Application filed April 22, 1925, Serial No. 25,043, and in Germany June 23, 1924.
Our invention relates to improvements in calculating machines provided with means for indicating the order of the numeral of the registering mechanism to which in the course of a calculation a value is being transmitted. The object of the improvements is to provide. a machine of this type in which the said orders are indicated by figures adapted to be moved by the operation of the calculating machine into displaying position. In the preferred form of the invention we provide two indicating means one in the form of a sector carrying the figures corresponding to the orders of the numeral wheels, and the other one in the form of fingers located one adjacent to each numeral wheel and carrying the figure indicating the order of the adjacent numeral wheel,- said fingers being l0 adapted to be brought into positions for displaying the figures provided thereon through the peep holes.
For the purpose of explaining the invention an example embodying the same has been shown in the accompanying drawings, in which the same reference characters have been used in all the views to indicate corresponding parts. In said drawings,

For the purpose of explaining the inven tion weshall describe the same as embodied in a machine of the type shown in a copending. application, Ser. No. 464.398 for adding machines. filed April 25, 1921, now Patent No. 1,707,303. As has been described in the said application the calculat- 40 ing machine comprises one set of key levers and a ,stop carriage or other setting mechanism adapted to arrange the figures being printed so that the units are automatically printed below the units. the tens below the tens, etc. In machines of this type indicating means have been provided for showing the order of the figures inserted into the calculation by depressing the keys, which indicating means are ordinarily controlled by the said setting mechanism. In our improved machine the said orders are indicated at the same part of the machine, so that the said indication can be directly found by the attendant. Preferably the indications are made through the peep holes through which the numeral wheels are inspected, because the eye of the attendant rests on the said peep holes.
To the side members of the machine casing rails 16 and 17 are secured on which a stop carriage 15 is movable transversely of the machine. As has been described in the said prior application the said stop carriage is provided with ten series of superposed stops 35 adapted to be shifted rearwardly by depressing the keys and into position for arresting type carrying levers, which levers are connected with toothed sectors adapted to rotate the numeral wheels 2. In our improved machine the carriage 15 is connected by a link 14 with a bell crank lever 13 mounted on a pivot bolt 12 rising from the base plate 1 of the machine. The arm 13' of the said bell crank lever is connected by a link 11 with a lever 9 rockingly mounted on a shaft 8. To the link 11 a spring 10 is attached which is adapted toshift the stop carriage one step to the left whenever a key is depressed, the movement of the stop carriage being controlled by an escapement mechanism as has been described in the said prior application. The lever 9 is connected to a link 7 adapted to be operated upon the return movement of the machine crank for returning the carriage 15 into initial position. The other end of the lever 9 is connected by a link 6 to an arm 5 of a sector 3, 4 rockingly mounted at 36.
The numeral wheels 2 are rotatably mounted on a shaft 18 and at the rear of the peep holes 19. The section 3 of the sector 3, 4 is provided at its circumference with the figures from 1 to 9 and the 0 sign, and by the intermittent movement of the ,stop carriage 15 the said sector is gradually rocked so as to display the figure corresponding to the position of the carriage. the peep hole 19 beingextended in lateral direction and blinded above the sector 3'so the shaft 21.
that at a time only one of the figures of the said sector is visible. In the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 all the parts are in their normal or inoperative positions. The gearing between the sector 3 and the stop carriage is such that when depressing one key the figure 1 of the sector 3 is displayed through the peep hole, and when successively depressing several keys the corresponding figure of the sector appears in the peep hole.
For many purposes the indicating means so far described will be suflicient. But in some calculations it is desirable to display the figures representing the orders in immediate relation to the numeral wheels. For this purpose a transverse shaft 21 is disposed parallel to the shaft 18 carrying the numeral wheels, and a gear wheel 31 is keyed to one end of the said shaft, which gear wheel is in mesh with teeth 4' pro vided on the sector section 4. Therefore, the rocking movement of the sector 3, 4, 5 is transmitted through the gear wheel 31 to The shaft 21 is provided with helically disposed lugs or fingers 22- spaced from eachother and respectively corresponding to the numeral wheels 2. The said shaft 21 is mounted in a transverse frame 23 secured to lugs 32 of the side members 30 of the machine frame by means of screws 33. On the said frame member 23 a shaft 24 is mounted on which bell crank levers 25, 26 are rockingly supported, springs 29 tending to rock the said levers into the position shown in Fig. 1. To the free arms of the said bell crank levers fingers 27 are jointed, which are guided in suitable slots 27 of the frame 23, and Which are in position with their bottom ends immediately above the numeral wheels 2.. The shorter or inner arms 25 of the bell crank levers 25, 26 are adapted to be engaged by the lugs 22 of the shaft 21. The calculating machine described herein is understood to have ten places, and accordingly the shaft 21 is provided with ten lugs which by reason of their helical arrangement are adapted to be successively thrown into cooperation with the bell crank levers 25, 26 for shifting the fingers 27 connected therewith into displaying position, so that when depressing one key only the first lug from the right is made operative, and when successively operating a plurality of keys the following lugs are successively made operative. The fingers 27 are provided each with one figure indicating the order of the corresponding numeral wheel, and the said figures rise from the right to the left.
The operation of the machine is as follows:
When entering a number containing three the intermediary of the members 13, 11, 9, 6 and 5, the toothed sector 4 and the gear wheel 31 are advanced through an angle corresponding to three teeth, so that the third lug 22 from the right side of the machine acts on the lever 25 so as to shift the finger 27 downwardly to the line 28. Upon the return movement of the machine crank all the parts are returned into initial position, and the lever 25, 26 is brought by the spring 29 into the initial position shown in Fig. 1.
By mounting the shaft 21, the levers 25, 26 and the fingers 27 on the transverse frame member 23 the said parts can be readily mounted and dismounted.
iVe claim:
1. In a calculating machine, the combination, with the setting mechanism, and the registering mechanism and its numeral wheels, of fingers one for each numeral wheel and adjacent thereto carrying figures indicating the orders of the numeral wheels, and means controlled by the setting mechanism for setting said fingers with their figures in indicating position.
2. In a calculating machine, the combination, with the setting mechanism, and the registering mechanism and its numeral wheels. of fingers one for each numeral wheel and adjacent thereto and carrying figures indicating the orders of the numeral wheels, and a rotary shaft operatively connected with the setting mechanism and carrying helically arranged lugs in position for successively moving said fingers with the figures provided thereon in displaying position.
