ABe it known that I, ARTHUR F. POOLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and YState of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Calculating-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in calculating machines, particularly in the type of calculating machine in which the numbers are inserted in a totalizer digit by digit.
One of the objects of my invention isl the provision of a totalizer clear printing device which will give an indication of when a total has been completelyY extracted from the totalizer.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a calculating machine yembodying a typewriter and providing the typewriter with a special characteristic mark which the operator is to print after printing out a total from the machine, and further in providing a special interlock for the characteristic mark whereby the printing oi' the same is prevented unless the total is wholly cleared from the machine.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a totalizer clear signal which is adapted to bevused with a plurality of totalizers. The locking mechanism 'for said signal is so arranged that each totalizer upon coming into' cooperation wit-h the printing mechanism determines independently whether or not a characteristic mark can be printed. Each totalizer determines for itself independently of the condition of any other totalizer whether or not a special characteristic mark shall be printed.
. A further object of my invention is the provision of a totalizer having mechanism adapted to ooperate with the above described printing mechanism and adapted to be used on a calculating machine of the type described in Patent Number 893,719 issued to John C. Vahl, July 21, 1908. Reference will show that this machine operates in conjunction with a Remingtontypewriter and inserts the number in its totalizer digitby digit duringthe printing of the same by the typewriter numeral keys. has associated with it an interlock operating with the printing mechanism of the lVahl machine so that a special characteristic mark can not be printed unless the number wheels of the totalizer stand at zero.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a totalizer clear signal mechanism which shall be simple in construction, positive in action, and easy of manufacture. y These and other objects of my invention are described in the accompanying specification, in the drawings of which;

As above stated, my invention is particularly designed to be used in connection with the calculating machine described in the aforesaid patent. Reference thereto will show a totalizer mounted on a typewriter carriage, a set of numeral keys, any one of which serves to operate a master wheel 4:9 and a master dog 208, also that the depress ing of any numeral key results in the master wheel 49 and dog 208 moving in the following sequence:
(a) Dog 208 moves in a counter clockwise direction (Fig. l), thus unlocking` the chain of total-izer gears at the actuated gear:
(b) The master wheel rotates an amount depending upon the key actuated:
(c) The dog returns to its original position:
(d) The carriage escapes, bringing the totalizer wheel of the neXt lower order into engagement with the master wheel.
It is to be noted that the actuation of the zero key will result in the sequence above mentioned except that in this event the master' wheel i9 will not rotate at all; the master dog and carriage action, however, is precisely the same as when a number is iuserted.

Since the mechanism and the operation of the Wahl machine is very thoroughlyy described in the patent above referred to, I shall not now enter into a further description of them but shall premise that the actuation of a typewriter numeral key results in the master key, masterV dog and carriage moving in the above recited sequence. The master wheel Vnumbered 49 and the master dog 208 in this present application correspond in position and function tothe master wheel and master dog bearing the same numbers in the patent of Vahl referred to above.
Fig. 5 is a front view of a-WVahl adding machine similar to that shown in the cited patent to l/Vahl. It consists of the Reming-A ton typewriter 50, which has associated with it the usual Vahl adding mechanism.- A truck 20 serves as a mounting for the two totalizers 52 and 53. Each of these totalizers is equipped with my improved totalizer` clear signal. As it is well known, the Vahl mechanism is suitable for use with any number of totalizers on the bar. I have shown two simply as a representation of a plurality.
' Suitably supported by its side platesxlO and 11 is a totalizer constructed similar to the totalizer of the above mentioned Vahl patent. This consists of a set of carrying gears 12 loosely mounted on a shaft 13 rigid between the plates 10 and 11 and which are adapted to coperate serz'atz'm with a master'wheel 49 rotatably mounted in the framework, anda set of carriable gears 14 pivoted at 15 on a set of swinging arms 16. These Y arms are loosely mounted on the Vshai'ts 17 and 18, and their associated carriable gears 14 serve to connect the carrying wheels 12. Arms 16 have heels 19 adapted to be engaged sem'atzm by the master dog 208. The carrying gears 12 are provided with carrying teeth, which coperate with the carriable gears 14 and thus transfer the tens at the proper time. The chain of gearing composed of the carrying gears and the carriable gears 14 is normally locked; therefore, in order forthe master wheel 49 to operate on any carrying wheel 12 except the one in the units place the master dog 208 acts onr a swinging arm 16, thus raising the carriable gear 14 mounted thereon out of mesh with the carrying gears 12 to the right and left, and unlocking the actuated carrying gear 12 from the next one to the right. I shall now describe the parts peculiar toV my present invention.
Rigidly supported between the side plates 10 and 11 is a shaft 21, on which is loosely i mounted a set of idle gears 22. These serve to transmit the motion of the carrying wheels to a set of number disks 23 loosely mounted on a shaft 24, by means of the engagement of each idler 22 with a gear 25 rigidly attached to its corresponding number disk 23. Each gear 25 of the set is provided with a short tooth 26, the parts being so proportioned: that the motion will be accurately transmitted from the gear 22 to the gear 25 in spite of the point of the tooth 26 being absent.
In the cover 34 is provided a window 36 through which the figures on the number disks 23'may be read, and the position of the short tooth 26 relative to the vnumbers on the associated-number disk issuch that'when this tooth is in the position 'shown in Fig.
1 a zero will be exhibited through the win dow 36 by the number disk 23.
Fulcrumed at 35 in the side plates 10 and 11 and extending between them is a comb 27 ig. 3) having a series of teeth 28 which arem the same plane and adapted to engage with the number disk gears 25. An arm 29 is rigidly attached to the comb 27 and is held by a spring 30 against a stud 31 rigidly mounted in the side plate 10. When the comb 27 is in its normal position (shown in Fig. 1) the teeth of the gears 25 will not make contact with said comb as these gears rotate.
Rotatably supported on the shaft 17 is a lever 32 having a slot 33 in one end, which slot engages the arm 29. The lever 32 has also a heel 37 which is like the heels 19 of the swinging arms 16 and is also adapted to be engaged by the master dog 208 when the totalizer has been moved in a position one space to the left of its position in which the master wheel is in engagement with the carrying wheel 12 in the units place.
The short teeth 26 of the gears 25 are in wheels are in this positionthe master dog 2081cannot rotate the lever 32 since if any gear 25 of the entire set has a normal tooth in a position to engage the comb 27 rotation of this comb is prevented. Consequently when the totalizer is in a position one step to the left of the unitsplace the master dog cannot operate unless all thenumeral .disks 28 stand at zero. Reference to thevWahl patent above mentioned will show that whenever the master dog-208 is prevented from operating the numeral keys of the typewriter are locked also, from which it follows thatif the totalizer is in the position above mentioned, viz. one step ,to the left of the units place, and the numeral disks 23-do not all stand at zero no printing can be done.
The typewriter on which this machine is mounted is oftheordinary type except that the type bar 38 for printing the zero hasin its upper casea star or othery characteristic mark. The operator is instructedtoprint this mark in thespace to the right of the. last figure of every total. Remembering that when the zero key of the typewriter is operated the master dog 208 is rocked but the master wheel 49 remains stationary, it will be readily seen that if the totalizer is at zero the star can .be printed in the required space, whereas if the totalizer has not been brought back to zero it will be impossibletypewriter being locked.
In certain of the claims, I haveused the expression: actuating mechanism adapted to actuate any of' said totalizers, or the like. It should be understood that although the zero key is not operative, when depressed, to rotate any number wheel of a totalizer, it actuates other elements of the totalizer in the same manner as when numbers are insertedby the depression of othernumeral keys. Y
I have not illustrated the construction of the shift key, since such construction is well known in the art; the shifting mechanism is illustrated in manytypewriter patents, and the combination 0f the typewriter with the totalizer actuator is very fully illustrated and described in the Wahl patent above referred to. I have, therefore. thought illustration of these features superfluous since both are well known to those skilled in the art. A
It may bef desirable to make an additional rulev for the operators that they shall print this star in the space immediately after the units place before beginn-ing a list of figures as yWell as afterfextracting a total. This will afford a double. checkon their work, since it will insure that the totalizer is clear before any numbers are inserted in it, and also willinsure that it is clear after a total has been copied out. This will eliminate errors due to beginning the work with a .totalizer having a. number. already in it,
thereby resulting in ya -false total of the numbers afterward inserted.
In case it shouldbe desired to use this device in connection with a typewriter which has no shift key it would only be necessary to provide an extra type bar adapted to print the characteristic totaliZer clear mark and to connect this to an additional cam in the actuator, which cam would have the same function and operation as the cam to which the Zero key is con.- nected in the cited Wahl patent. Such a construction could be readily made by those skilled in the art, and I consider it an obvious equivalent of my invention.
Attention is called t0 the compactness of this lockingmechanism. The cams for determining the zero position of the number disks are made on the number disks themselves by the simple process of shortening one of the numberV disk gear teeth. The actuating lever 32 which actuates the comb 27 is mounted on the same shaft 17 as the swinging arms 16 and has a heel 37 which is engaged by the master dog 208 in common with the heels 19 0f the swinging arms. It is-obvious that a, separate set of cams geared to have a fixed relation to the number disks might be used and a universal member be arranged to be thrown in contact with such cams.
I am aware that totalizer clear distinguishing marks have been used in adding machines of the type in which the totalizer receives the numbers not serz'cztz'm but all the digits simultaneously. However, I believe that I am the first t0 provide a totalizer clear signal for a calculating machine in which the numbers are inserted in the totalizersem'atz'm by a master wheel and I wish to claim the same broadly.
Many changes and modifications may be made in the precise structure herein shown and described since I claim:
1. In a recording calculating machine, the combination of a plurality of totalizers, actuating mechanism adapted to actuate any of said totalizers, a set of keys adapted to actuate said actuating mechanism to thereby insert numbers in any of said totalizers, means for printing a characteristic mark operatively connected toy said actuating mechanism, and mechanism associated with each of said totalizers for locking .a part of said actuatingfmechanism except when the totalizer in engagement therewith stands at zero, whereby the printing of said characteristic mark is prevented except when the then engaged totalizer stands at zero.
2. In a recording calculating machine,
the combination of a pluralityof. totalizers, actuating mechanism adaptedtc insert numbers in any of said totalizers, a key for printing a characteristic mark operatively Y connected to said actuating mechanism, and
means for preventing the operation of'said actuating mechanism when said totalizer isl in a certain position relative to' said actuating mechanism eXcept when said totalizer stands at Zero, whereby the printing of said characteristic mark is also prevented unless said totalizer stands atzero. l
3. In Va calculating machine, the combination of a totalizer, .means for printing a characteristic mark, said printing means being capable 'of operationindependently of the condition of said totalizer, a zero determining device in said totalizer, and means for bringing said printing means into cooperation with said totalizer,l whereby the operation or vnon-operation of said printing means lis determined solely by the condition of said Zero. determining-device associated with said totalizer.
4. In a recording calculating machine, the
f combination of a totalizer, a key actuated type-bar having a normal and a shift position, said type bar being adapted-tc print one character when in its normal position and a second character when in its shift position, mechanism for locking said type bar,
and means for rendering said locking mechanism ineffective when said totalizer stands at zero.
5. In a recording calculating machine, the combination of a plurality of totalizers, actuating mechanism therefor, said actuating mechanism being adapted to insert numbers in said totalizer digit by digit, means for printing a characteristic niark operatively associated with said actuating mechanism, whereby when said actuating mechanism is locked, said means for printing said characteristic mark will be locked, also, mechanism individual to said totalizer for locking said actuating mechanism when said totalizer is in a predetermined relation to saidactuating mechanism,.and means rendering said locking means ineffective when said totalizer stands at Zero. 6. In a recording calculating machine, the combination of a totalizer and actuating mechanism therefor adapted to insert numbers in said totalizer digit by digit, gears in said,totalizer-adapted to be actuated by .said actuating mechanism, said gears constituting a normally locked gear chain, means for unlocking said chain at the actuated gear, means for printing a characteristic mark, and mechanism for locking said printing means when said totalizer is in a predetermined position in relation to said actuating mechanism, said Vlocking mechanism beingactuated by said gearchain unlocking means.
7 In a totalizer, aset of number wheels, a setV of gears rigidly rotating therewith, each of said gears having at least one short tooth, and a common member adapted to engage all ofsaid gears. Y
8. In a recording calculating machine, the combination of totalizer actuating mechanism, a totalizer comprising a normally locked chain, means for unlocking said chain at the actuated point, a iset of gears one for each decimal place, each of said gears having a short tooth, and a universal member adapted to coperate with said short teeth, said universal member being adapted to be actuated by the means for unlocking said gear chain.
9. In a recording calculating machine, the combination of a totalizer, a master wheel relatively movable thereto and adapted to insert numbers therein digit by digit, a set of numeral keys, a universal member, the mechanism between said master wheel, universal member and numeral keys being such that the universal member is actuated and the master wheel is rotated a denite amount upon the actuation o-f'any y numeral key, mechanism for printing a characteristic mark and simultaneouslyactuating saiduniversal member, a lock for said universal member located in said totalizer, and -means to render said lock ineffective when said totalizer standsA at Zero. i
10. In a recording calculating mecahine the combination ofa totalizer, including a gear wheel for each decimal place thereof, a master wheel relatively movable to said totalizer and adapted to insert numbers therein digit by digit, mechanism for printing a charac- .teristic mark, a lock for said printing mechanism, said lock coperating with said set of gears anda short vtooth on each of saidA set of gears thereby rendering Said lock ineffective when said totalizer stands lat zero. s Y Y Y -f11'. VIn a recording calculating machine, the combination of a totalizer, actuating mechanism therefor, said actuating mechanism being adapted to insert numbers in said totalizer digit by digit in a certain zone, means for lprinting a characteristic mark, means for locking said printing means brought into operation as said totalizer passes out of said number-inserting zone, said locking means being so arranged that it is effective when said totalizer is in said number-inserting zone, and means rendering said locking mechanism ineii'ective when said totalizer stands at zero. v
12. In a recording calculating machin the combination of a totalizer, a printing mechanism, a shift mechanism for said printing mechanism,` said printing mechanism being adapted to print a characteristic for locking said printing mechanism, and
means rendering said locking mechanism ineffective when said totalizer stands at zero.
13. In a recording calculating machine the combination of a totalizer, a key for printing a characteristic mark, a shift key determining whether or not said key shall print said characteristic mark, mechanism for locking said key, and means 'for rendering said locking mechanism ineective when said totalizer stands at zero.
14. In a totalizer2 a set of number wheels, a set of gears rigidly rotating therewith, each of said gears having at least one short tooth, and a comb whose teeth are adapted to engage all of said gears.
15. In a recording calculating machine, the combination of two totalizers, actuating mechanism adapted to coperate with either of said totalizers, means for printinr a characteristic mark, and a control for said printing means located in said actuator, a su pleinentary control for said printing mec anisms located in one of said totalizers, and a second supplementary control for said printing mechanism located in the other of said totalizers, and means to render one of said totalizer controls effective while the other Vcontrol is ineffective.
16. In a recording and calculating machine, the combination of two totalizers, actuating mechanism adapted to enter numbers in either of said totalizers, means under control of said actuating mechanism for printing a characteristic mark, a control for said printing means located in one of said totalizers and acting through the medium of said actuator, a second control'for said printing means located in the other totalizer and likewise acting through the intermediation of said actuating mechanism, and means to determine which o'ne of said totalizer con- 4 mark associated with one of said numeral..
keys, a control for said printing means located in one of said totalizers, a second control for said printing means located inthe other totalizer, and means to shift said printing means from one totalize'r to another.
18. In a recording calculating machine, the combination with a totalizer and actuating mechanism of a set of numeral keys operatively connected with'v said actuating mechanism to enter numbers in said totalizer, means for printing a characteristic mark also connected to said actuating mechanism and adapted to actuate vcertain portions of said actuating mechanism when said printmeans are operated, acontrol for said printing means determining whether or not said printing means shall be operated, said control being rendered edective through the 'medium of said actuating mechanism, a second control for said printing means determining whether or not said printing means shall be operated, said second control being also rendered ell'ective through the medium of said actuating mechanism, and means to determine which of said controls shall be effective on said printing mechanism.
19. In a recording calculating machine, the combination of a set of numeral keys, and actuating mechanism adapted to be operated by any of said keys, means for printing a characteristic mark, determining means in said actuating means to determine whether or Vnot said printing means shall be operated, a traveling member, a control for said determining means mounted on said traveling member, a second control for said printing means also mounted on said traveling member, the arrangement of said controls being such that either control may be brought into operation with said determining means to the exclusion of the other control.
20. In a recording calculating machine, the combination of a set of numeral keys, two totalizers, actuating mechanism adapted to be operated by any of said numeral keys, and also adapted to be brought into coperation with either of said totalizers, means for printing a characteristic mark under the control of one of the members of said actuator, a control for said latter member locatedin one of said totalizers, a second control for said latter member located in the other of said totalizers, and a traveling member to'shift said control from one totalizer to another.
21. In a recording calculating machine, the combination of a set of numeral keys, actuating mechanism, a universal member in said actuating mechanism adapted to be operated upon the operation of any of said numeral keys, two totalizers adapted to have numbers entered into them by said actuating mechanism, means Jfor printing a characteristic mark connected to said universal member, a control for said universal member located in one of said totalizers, a second control for said universal memberv located in said second totalizer, and means controlled by said universal keys to shift the control of said universal member from one totalizer to another.
22. In a recording calculating machine, the combination of a set of numeral keys, actuating mechanism, a universal member in said actuating mechanism adapted to be operated upon the operation of any of said numeral keys, two totalizers adapted to have numbers entered into them by said actuating mechanism, means for printing a characteristic ,mark connected to said universal member, a control for said universal member located in Vone of said totalizers, a second control for said universal member located in said second totalizer, anda travelingmember controlled by said universal keys to shift the control of said universal member from one totalizer to another. 23. In a recording calculating machine, the combination of a setv of numeral keys, actuating mechanism operated by said numeral keys, a universal member in said actuating mechanism being operated upon the operation of any of said numeral keys, means for Vprinting. a characteristic mark controlled by the position of said universal member, two totalizers adapted to have numbers entered into them by said actuatingV mechanism, a control for said universal member located in one of said totalizers, said control being rendered ineffective when said totalizer stands at zero, a second control for said universal member located in said second totalizer, and means to shift the effective control of said universalmember from one totalizer to another. v
24. In a recording calculating machine,
the combination of a set of numeral keys,
actuating mechanism operated by any of said keys, including a universal member moved a constant amount upon the operation of any of said keys, means for printing a characteristic mark connected to one of the keys Vof said actuator, means to lock said universalV member under certain circumstances, two totalizers, a traveling truck upon which said totalizers are mounted, a control forV said universal` member located in one of said totalizers, and a second control' for said-universal member Vlocated in said second totalizer, the arrangement being such that the travel-of said truck shifts said universal member out of engagement with one totalizer and into engagement with the other totalizer. f
25. In a'totalizer, the combination of a set Vof number wheels, a set of gears rigidly ro-v tating therewith, each of said gears having `atleast one short tooth, a second set of gears engaging with'said rst set and adapted to rotate said first set withoutl interference from said short tooth.
26. In a totalizer, the lcombination of a set ofV number wheels, a set of gears rigidly rotating therewith, each of said gears having one short tooth, meansfto drive said set of gears and zero-determining means coperating with said set of gears.

said controls being also independent of' each other, whereby the fact of one ,totalizer standing atv zero permits the printing of Y the characteristic mark despite the fact of the second totalizer exhibiting a number therein.
30. In a calculating machine, the combination of aset of numeral keys, an actuating mechanism including auniversal element moved a constant distance on the operation of any of Vsaid numeral keys, a totalizer adapted to be brought into coperation with said actuating mechanism, means for printing a characteristic mark controlled by the position of said universal member a control for `said Vuniversal member associated with said totalizer, the effectiveness of said con-` trol being determined by the position of the numeral wheels of said second totalizer, said controls being also independent, whereby the fact of one totalizer standing at zero permits the operation of said universal member and printing meansl despite the fact that said second totalizer does not stand at zero.
31. The combination with a totalizer unit,
Vactuating mechanism therefor, a vsetV of numeral keys Voperative on said actuating mechanism to thereby insert numbers in said totalizer, printing mechanism therefor including a certain characteristic-mark printing device indicative of a certain'condition of the totalizer,' said' characteristic-mark printing device being connected to one Aof the number-'inserting instrumentalities of the actuator, and controlling means intermediate of said printing. Ydevice and said IOO totalizer unit arranged and adapted to render said printing means actuatable only when devoted exclusively to said totalizer unit, whereby said printing means is unaf fected by additional totalizer units.
32. In a recording calculating machine, the combination of a totalizer, a set of numeral keys adapted to insert numbers in said totalizer, a type bar adapted to be actuated by one of said numeral keys, said type bar having a normal and a shift position and being adapted to print one character when in its normal position and a second character when in its shift position, mechanism individual to said totalizer for locking said type bar and means for rendering said locking mechanism ineective when said totalizer stands at Zero.
33. In a recording calculating machine, the combination of a totalizer, including a set of gears, actuating mechanism for said gears including a universal member operating on said totalizer and adapted to be moved each time said actuating mechanism operates said totalizer, and a lock controlled by said totalizer gears adapted to prevent the movement of said universal member.

In a recording calculating machine, the combination of a totalizer, a set of numeral wheels, actuating mechanism for said wheels including a universal member operating on said totalizer and adapted to be moved each time said actuating mechanism operates said totalizer, and a lock controlled by said numeral wheels adapted to prevent the movement of said universal member.

In a recording calculating machine, the combination of a totalizer, a set of number wheels having mutilated teeth, zero determining means cooperating with said mutilated teeth to thereby determine the zero position of the totalizer, means for printing a characteristic mark, and a moving carriage adapted to bring said zero determining means and said printing means into cooperation whereby the former may determine whether or not the latter is to be operated.
36. In a recording calculating machine, the combination of a totalizer, a set of number wheels having mutilated teeth, zero determining means coperating with lsaid mutilated teeth to thereby determine the zero position of the totalizer, means for printing a characteristic mark, a moving carriage adapted to bring said Zero determining means and said printing means into cooperation whereby the former may determine whether or not the latter is to be operated, and means to operate said printing means.
