SMOKING PIPE.

The invention relates to improvements in smoking pipes, and has particular reference to those `pipes made of a phenol resin compound, or the like.

The object'of the present invention is to improve the construction described so as to reinforce the same in a manner that will materially reduce the liability of injury thereto either by becoming overheated in use or by negligent handling of the same, permitting the same'to drop or fall to the Hoor, and which will maintain the pipe in a useful and uninjured or undamaged condition for a longer period than has been customary heretofore.

The main diiculty with pipes of this character is 'that the bowl thereof quickly becomes overheated in use and begins to crack, or is otherwise damaged, rendering.

the pipe useless. Attempts have been made to reinforce the bowl of the pipe, and other means have been proposed for preventing the cracking or otherwise injuring the bowl of the pipe. But even then diiliculty has been experienced in making a suificiently secure connection between the bowl of the pipe and the inner reinforcing bowl to prevent the formation of an air compartment there- 4 in, which is the case when the inner bowl is screwed into the outer bowl, the said air compartment causing a cracking of the outer bowl when the same becomes overheated. Another difficulty is that the stem of the pipe which is generally internally threaded at the end thereof, to receive a suitable mouthpiece, or the like is considerably weakened by said threading and is easily broken or otherwise injured when dropped or permitted to fall to the floor.

Another object of the invention is to pro.: vide in a pipe of the character described having an outer bowl and stem, an inner bowl rigidly and xedl'y held in said outer bowl for preventing: the latter from becoming overheated in use, and means for rein` forcing the free end of said stem.

A further-object of the invention is to provide in a pipe of the character described having an outer bowl and stem, an 'nner bowl of briar wood, or the like, rigidly and fixedly secured within said outer bowl for preventing the vlatter from becoming overheated, and a reinforcing sleeve of metal or the like provided in the free end of the stem for reinforcing the same and for receiving in threaded engagement therewith armouth-v piece or the like.

A still further object of the invention is toprovide in a pipe of the character described, having a bowl and a.stem', a metal tube having one end thereof rigidly secured to amouthpiece or the like and being adapt- .Y

ed to be received removably in the stem of said pipe, said tube extending thro hout the fullvlength of said stem and he d in threaded engagement with said stem, thereby facilitating the ease and convenience with which the said pipe may be assembled.

A still further object of the invention is to provide in a ipe of the character described, a tube ofp metal, or the like, which isadapted for connecting the stem of saidv pipe to a mouthpiece and for reinforcing the free end of said stem at the point of connec-v tion between the stem and mouthpiece.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a pipe of the character described, havinga bowl and a stem of a phenol resin compound, or the like, which bowl is adapted to be shrunk unto an inner bowl of briar wood, or the like, whereby a rigid, ahd secure connection is obtained between the said inner and outer bowls.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, my' invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts of my device whereby the ob'ects conternnlated are attained, as hereina er more fully set forth, pointed out\in the-appendedr claims, and illustrated in the drawings.

My invention is 'illustrated in one form of a smoking pipe, but this selection is merely for the purpose of explaining the invention, and it will be understood that the invention canbe embodied in an form of pipe for which it is or may be a apted. j

Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that my inventionrontemplates in this embodiment a pipe havinga bowl 10, and a straight stem 11, throu h which extends a' smoke passage 12, to the owl. The bowl 10, and the stem 11,are made from a phenol i resin compound, or the like. said bowl and stem being cut out of a block of said compound, as by brazing, or in any other suitable manner. v

The said pipe bowl is reinforced by providing `on theinsideV thereof a bowl 13, of

briar wood, or the like,'for the purpose of preventing the said outer .bowl from becoming overheated and eventuall cracking. The inner bowl is adapted to be held rigidly and securely in the outer bowl, the fit between the two bowls being very snu whereby the possibility of the formation o air comartments therebetween will be eliminated. n order to properly and securely position the inner bowl 13 in said outer bowl 10, the following method' may be used, which method has been found to give very satisfactory results. The bowl 10, after the same hasV been formed from the block of phenol vresin compound, is heated so as to cause an expansion of the same. The bowl 13, is then osit-ioned in said bowl 10, and the latter alowed to cool. The shrinkin of the outer bowl in cooling will cause t e same to be shrunk on the inner bowl, assuring a close and snug lit between the two. If desired, a suitable adhesive substance may be provided etween the said bowls for further aiding i rlgidly maintaining the same in assembled c ndition. An opemng 14, is provided in th klower wall of the inner bowl 13,l for commu icationwith the smoke passage 12, provided in the stem 11.

'A- mouthpiece 15, having a vsmoke passage 16, is adapted to be associated with the pipe stem 11. The inner end of said mouthpiece. may be provided with an internally threaded bore, indicated at 17, which bore is adapted to receive in rigid engagement therewith, an externally threaded end 18 of a tube 19, 0f metal, or otherlsuitable material, the other end of said tube 19, being adapted to be ref ceived in the stem 11, and extend throughout the full length thereof, the mouth-20, of said tube, when the mouthpiece and stem are assembled, being positioned adjacent the opening 14, inthe inner bowl 13. A portion of the outer periphery of the tube 19, adjacent the threaded end 18, is externally threaded as indicated at 21, said threaded portion 21, being adapted to be received in threaded engagement with an internally threaded sleeve 22, of metal, or the like. The said sleeve 22 is rigidly and fixedly secured in the ee end of the stem 11, and is adapted for, not'only' receiving the tube 19, but also reinforces the end of said stem, whereb the liability of injury to said stem in fa ing is eliml-l nat'ed. The sleeve 22 may be secured to said stem 11, in a manner` similar to that em- Eloyed for securing the inner bowl 13 to the owl 10, or in any other suitable manner.

It will be noted that my construction provides reinforcing for the pipe'stem at the free end thereof where it is most needed, and it also reinforces the threaded end of the mouthpiece which is usually weak because of the threads provided therein. It will also be noted that the tube 19 is rigidly connected to the-mouthpiece, thereby greatly facilitating the assembling of the several parts of the pipe.

vFrom the foregoing description it is thought to be'obvious that a smoking pipe constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience andL facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and

it is also obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without' departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying my invention into practice except as herein claimed.

What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. The method of making a smoking pipe of the character described which com rises, rst cutting out of a block of a pheno resin compound, a pipe bowl and stem having a smoke passage therethrough, then heating the same to cause it to expand, then inserting into said rst bowl an inner bowl of briar wood, and then allowing the same to cool, whereby the said'outer bowl is shrunk on to the said inner bowl.
