CAN CLOSURE.

This invention relates to improvements in can closures and has particular reference to a device for use with milk cans and other similar cans wherein only a portion of the contents is dispensed at a time.
Another object is to produce a device which may be clamped upon a can in such a manner as to occupy a minimum amount of space and one which will remain upon the can in a locked position.
A further object is to produce a device which is economical to manufacture.
A still further object is to produce a device which is neat in appearance, simple to operate and quickly removed or placed upon the can.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this .siecification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device,
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1, taken at right angles thereto, and
Figure 3 is a top plan view of Figure 1.
Evaporated milk is put up in cans and the common manner of removing the contents is to punch two holes in the top of the can and unless some means is provided for sealing these holes the contents of the can will soon become dried up and is liable to become contaminated through dust entering the holes.
Applicant has therefore produced a device which will obviate this trouble.
In the accompanying drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates an ordinary milk can to which my invention is to be applied. At 6 I have shown a circular base plate having upturned ears 7 and 8 as well as upturned ears 9 and 11. These ears all serve to position the can upon the base 6. The ears 7 and 8 have hingedly connected therewith pivoted members 12 and 13 respectively. Each of these hinged members carries at its upper ends, ears 14 which are bent as best shown 1928. Serial No. 277,459.
in Figure 2 and form a sliding connection for a yoke 16. This yoke has outwardly turn ends 17 a short distance from which is formed an opening 18 adapted to engage pins 19 carried in the hinged members 12 and 13.
The yoke 16 carries a pair of rubber caps as shown at 21 and 22, which caps are adapted to compress against the top of the can and to overlie the openings punched therein.
T he manner of using my device is as follows Assuming that the same has been placed upon the can as shown in Figure 1, by pulling outwardly upon the ends 17 of the yoke, the openings 18 will be released from the pins 19 after which the yoke may be moved to the dotted line position of Figures 1 and 2, the openings 18 will snap over the pins 19 thus holding the caps 21 and 22 in intimate contact with the top of the can 5.
It will thus be seen that I have produced a device which will accomplish all the objects above set forth.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that various changes relative to the material, size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim y In a device of the character described, a base plate having a plurality of ears formed thereon, said ears serving to maintain a can in position on said plate, pivoted members secured to the opposite sides of said plate, a yoke slidably secured to said pivoted members, the ends of said yoke having openings formed therein, pins carried in said pivoted members and adapted to pass through the openings in said yoke, and a pair of resilient caps secured to said yoke for the purpose specified.
