UNITED STATES PATENT Demon.
THOMAS SHUMAN, OF OORNING, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN STOVE-PIPE THIMBLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 172,663, dated January 25, 1876; application filed November 19, 1875. l
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS SHUMAN, of Corning, in the county of Adams and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Thimbles for Ohimney Flues and Partitions; and I do'hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, that will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon,
which form a part of this specification.
The same letters and figures of reference are used to indicate the corresponding parts. After describing the invention, its nature and extent will be shown in the claims.
The object of my invention is to provide a stove-pipe thimble for both chimneys and for partition-walls, which will avoid the usual objections to thimbles in common use. My thimble may also be used for ceilings.
Figure 1 is a perspective view; Fig. 2, a plan view, and Fig. 3 avertical sectional view taken longitudinally.
A shows the stove-pipe, already entered into the thimble. B is a circular cast-iron disk, provided in its central part with a circular opening of the size required by the stove-pipe. B is provided with three lugs, a a, which enter the cylinder D. These'lugs are pierced by small holes at theirextremities, and may be fastened to the cylinder D by rivets. O is a disk, provided also with a circular opening of sufficient size to receive the cylinder D. It is provided with flattened triangular-shaped lugs, which join the diskB. On the opposite side it is provided with three slotted lugs. Into these slots enter the rivets, which fasten the lugs to a to the cylinder D. E is a disk, provided with a circular opening of the same size as the stove-pipe, which also pierces it as it does B. To the disk E is attached the cylinder D, by means of lugs which enter the cylinder and are riveted to it. Between the cylinder D and the stove-pipe A is an airspace to prevent heating the surrounding Wood-work of Walls or ceilings, or of woodwork and surrounding chimneys. The space between G and B is left to receive the plastering in chimneys, the lugs bedded in the plas ter holding the thimble firmly in place. When the thimble is placed in ceilings this space receives the carpet.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I The disk B, provided with the triangular lugs a a perforated at the apex, and constructed and arranged as shown, so that the rivet or bolt entering the said slotted lug and cylinder D may pass between the double lugs on the inside ofthe disk O, in combination with the disk E fastened by flanges to the inside of the cylinder D, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that 1 claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand this 29th day of October, 1875.
THOMAS SHUMAN.
