IMPROVEMENT IN STOVE'PIPE THIMBLES,

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,499, dated May 18, 1875; application filed November 21,1874.

. To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that we, CHARLES M. LAUGH- LIN and JOHN It. HUGHES, of Bevier, in the county of Macon and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in StovePipe Thimbles; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a stove-pipe thimble, allowing the inner portion of the same to be removed at will, for the purpose of cleaning, tre., and easily7 replaced by the use of sockets and springs, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is an end view of our invention, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same through the line a; Fig. l.

A represents a hoop or thimble formn g the case of the ventilator made of cast-iron, sheet metal, or other suitable material. Around one edge of the case A is a projecting `flange, a, half an inch wide, more or less. N ear the outer end of the tiinble are two sockets, b b, formed in or attached to it, and at this end of the thimble is a wire edge, d, to receive the plastering. B represents the ventilators placed one within the other, and connected at the ends by annular heads, which are provided with a number of perforations, x w, to allow free passage of air between the cylinders for the purpose of keeping the heat from the wall, and at the same-time Ventilating the room. In the outer end of the ventilator B, are arranged two spring-catches, h h, which, when the ventilator is inserted in the case A, take into the sockets b b of the case, and hold the ventilator in place. The ends of the catches h h, project through slots in the end of the ventilator, so that they can be easily pressed inward to take out the ventilator.

In order to put in the ventilator, it is only necessary to push it into the case, and turn 1t around until the catches h come to the sockets b, when they ily out and hold it secure.

This ventilator is self-adjustable, and can be taken out in a moments time for the purpose of cleaning, repairing, or replacing with a new one, which can be done without injury to iiue or ceiling.

Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a stove-pipe thimble,the hoop or thimble A, provided with flange a at one end, and sockets b b, near the other end, as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The hoop or thiinble A, having ange a, and sockets b b, in combination with the ventilator B, composed of two cylinders of different diameters connected by perforated heads, and the spring-catches hh, all substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
