SAND-TREATING MACHINE.
Application filed November 1, 1924. Serial No. 747,157.
Our invention relates to sand treating machines, and particularly to machines which are used for treating sand for foundry purposes by riddling or screening or cutting, or otherwise treating it.
The principal object of the invention 1s to provide a simple, practical and efiicient machine for treating sand for foundry purposes.
Another object ofthe invention is to provide a machine which will both riddle or screen and also cut the sand.
Other objects of the invention will appear and be pointed out hereinafter.
In the accompanying a side elevation of a sand treating machine embodying our invention;

Figs. 4 and 5 are views of details of construction, taken on lines 4-4 and 5-5, re-. spectively, in Fig. 1. i 1 1 Referring to the drawings, we show a machine having a body frame 1, the front por tion of which is mounted on wheels 2-2, and the rear portion of which is provided with handles 33, by which the rear end of the machine may be lifted so as to move it about from place to place on the wheels 2-2. Legs 44 are also provided on which the rear portion of the machine may stand when lowered by the handles 3-3. This type of frame orcarriage for the machine, while advantageous, is not of course essential to the invention.
The machine is provided with a screen or riddle 5 preferably mounted at the upper part of the machine, being supported by cross beams 66 which are in turn carr1ed by swinging links 7-7 pivotally connected with the beams 66 at 88, and with brackets 99 on the frame 1 by pivots 10-10. The screen 5 fits removably in a frame 11 carried by the beams 6-6.
Means are preferably provided for moving or shaking the screen or riddle 5 so as to screen or riddle the sand, the means shown conveniently comprising a crank pin 12 on a rotary drivlng shaft 13, the crank 12 having a roller 12 and being arranged to work in the slot or opening 14 in a bracket 15 secured by bolts 16 to the riddling frame whereby the drawings Figure 1 rotation of shaft 13 will cause a horizontal sidewise movement of the riddle, and also an up and down movement of the same. slot 14 is considerably wider than the pin 12 actuating the riddle, and the-riddle is provided w1th a beam ormember 6? extending rearwardly from. the riddle and provided with knobs or bumping: members 6-6 vcured to the framepiecel (Fig. 4):. -By
this arangement the knobs 6 6 will strike the opposite sides of the buffing block 6 toward the end of the sidewise movements or strokes of the riddle as induced by the rotary crank pin 12, andwwhen'these knobs' strike said bufling block, the riddle is suddenly stopped, as a result of which the riddle is given the sudden stopping or jerking action at the ends of its sidewise movement almost identical to the riddling action of a J molder when handling a screen.
-The shaft 13 is driven by some suitable source of power, as for example, by an electric motor 18 mounted on frame 1 and having a belt connection 19 with saidshaft 13. v
A cutting device for cutting sand is also desirably provided on the machine, the same conveniently consisting of a rotary cutting member 21 having cutting blades 2222, arranged to cut the sand in preparation for re-use in the foundry. This cutting member 21 is preferably located below and to one side of the screen or riddle 5, as shown in Fig. 1, and in such position that the sand falling through the riddle 5 will be cut by the cutting device 21, said sand being preferably allowed to run or slide down an inclined chute 22 having a hopper end 23 below the screen or riddle 5, and extending downwardly at an inclination from the screen 5 to a place substantially below the cutter 21. r
This rotary cutter 21 is preferably power driven, as for example, by a belt connection 24 extending from a pulley 25 on rotary driving shaft 13 to and around a pulley or driving wheel 26 on the axis 27 of cutter 21.
Thus the sand may first be thrown into the screen or riddle 5, either by hand or a pulley 20 on a otherwise, and will be screened or riddled and the riddled or screened sand will fall into'the chute 22 and be conveyed downwardly thereby and will then be cut by the blades 22 of the rotary cutting device 21 so as tofit it for re-use in foundry. In this way the sand is treated and mixed and cut in an especially desirable manner and the riddled and cut sand will be thrown into a pile and away from the machine by the 7 cutting device 21.
It will be understood that changes and modifications may be made without departin from the spirit of the invention. 1
hat I claim is:
1. A machine of the class specified comprising means for screening the sand, means for cutting the same, said cutting means being located below the riddling means, said machine being provided with a chute for conveying the sand from the riddling to the cutting means. i
2. A machine of'the class specified comprising riddling means combined with power mechanism for agitating the same, and a rotary'cutter arranged to receive sand from the riddling means and combined with power means for operating it so as to cut the riddled sand.
3. A machine of the class specified comprising riddling means combined with power mechanism for agitating the same, and
, cutting means arranged to receive sand from the riddling means and combined with power means for operating it so as to cut the riddled sand, said cutting means being located below the riddling means, and a chute for conveying sand from the riddling device to the cutting means.
41A machine of the class specified comprising a riddling screen mounted on the upper part of the machine, means for horizontally vibrating said screen, a sand conveying chute arranged below said screen and extending downwardly and to one side thereof, a rotary cutting device located near the bottom of said chute, a power generator and mechanism' for operating said screen and cutting device from said power generator.
5. A machine of the class specified comprising a riddling screen mounted on the upper part of, the machine, means for horizontally vibrating said screen, a sand conveying chute arranged below said screen and extending downwardly and to one side thereof, a rotary cutting device located near the bottom of said chute, a power generator and mechanism for operating said screen and cutting device from said power generator, said power means comprising a rotary driving shaft connected to be driven by the power generator and having a.crank connection with the screen supporting means and a belt connection between said power shaft and rotary cutting devices.
6. A sand treating machine adapted to be moved over a foundry floor, comprising a riddling screen mounted on the upper part thereof, means for vibrating said screen for causing sand to fall therethrough, a cutting cylinder for cutting said sand and conditioning the same for re-use, said cylinder being adapted to discharge and pile sand away from said machine and a chute for conveying sand from said screen to said cutting cylinder.
