IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR REFITTING GLOBE-VALVES..

Be it known that I, CHARLES F; HALL, of Skaneateles, in the county of Onondaga and` State of New York, have invented a new and4 Improved Machine for Rettin g GlobeValves, Stop-Oocks,&c., of which the following is a specification:
The invention will rst be described in connection with drawing, and then pointed out in the claims.
Figure l is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the apparatus for retitting the valves and the plugs for the cocks. Fig. 2 represents the same, partly in side elevation and partly in sectional elevation, showing a modification of some of the details. Fig. 3 is a transverse section, taken on the line .fr .fr of Fig. 1.` Fig. 4. is a transverse section taken on the line y y of Fig. l. Fig. 5 is a section on the line z z of Fig. 4., and Fig. 6 represents different forms or arrangements of cutters that I propose to use. Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The plugs A, for stop-cocks, such as represented in dotted lines in Fig. l, also the valves of the ordinary lglobe-valves, are to be suspended upon the centers B and C, to be acted on by cutters D E, &c., the said valves or plugs being turned against the cutters, which are held stationary, the turning being effected by a wrench or. handle applied to center fC, and the latter having a dog or carrier, F, adapted for holding the plugs or valves.
The center G turns freely in an adjustingscrew, G, which screws in the stand H to set the center up to the plug or valve, and is held in position by a jamnut, I, on it, screwing against the stand H. The center B is mounted in a hollow spindle or shaft, J, supported in a stand, K, and made adjustable in its lengthwise directionto shift the apparatus for holding short or long plugs or valves; but it is prevented from turning by a binding-screw, L.
The said center B may either pass through shaft J its whole length, as. represented in Fig. 1, screwing in it a part of the way for adjusting it endwise, or it may extend part of the way through, as represented in Fig. 2,
with a spiral spring, M, and an adjustingp screw, J, behind, for pressing it against the valve or plug with an elastic action.
The cutters D E, dto., which are of different forms, to correspond with the different forms of the plugs and valves, are mounted on bars N or N' connected to the disks O P, from one to the other of which they extend, so as to be adjusted radially to shift them for plugs or valves of different sizes, and to shift them to different bevels.
For long tapered plugs A long straight-ed ged knives D will be fixed on straight bars I being bolted to the bars by bolts Q. passing through slots in them, or in any equivalent way, so that said cutters can be adjustedion said bars at either or both ends, and said cutters may also be pivoted to said bars at the end next to the disk O, it' preferred. 'lhey may also be used with good results without being adjustably connected to said bars.
rlhe cutters E for the valves, which require to be more oblique to the axis of the centers, and not so long, will be shorter than D, and above or beyond the cutting portion will merge in a bar, N, which will extend to the disk P, said cutters heilig pivoted to the radially-adjustable sliding blocks S on the disk 0.
The bars N', carrying the cutters D, will also be pivoted to these blocks, or the 4cutters themselves may be, dispensing with the bars N', and having the cutters prolonged so as to connect with disk P. The cutters E may also be affixed to bars N', as cutters D are, it' preferred.
rlhe said cutters or their bars are piv'oted to the sliding blocks S, for adjusting the cutters radially at one end, and these blocks are so adjusted by sliding the short sleeve T 011 the spindle or shaft J toward or from the disk, to which sleeve they are connected by the rods U, which are jointed to both so as to impart the required radial movements by such movements of the sleeve. The said sleeve is fastened where required, to hold the blocks when adjusted by the jam-nuts V.

The object of this is to avail myself of this mode of supporting and'adjusting the cut-Y- ters in special machines for valves only -in which' the bars N or N', disk P, and its adjuncts are not required, said devicesbeing only necessary in machines for retittin g the plugs, or the same and the valves as the one here shown. For supporting the yother ends of the cutters, and adjusting them, I have the disk P screwed on the inner end of the adjustingscrew G, and connected to disk O by three (more or less) bars, W, rigidly attached to disk 0,but adjustably attached to disk P, so that itcan. be shifted' toward or' from 0,'the connection being .preferably formed by the Abars being boxed into the face of the disk,y and boltsatl passing through longitudinal slots ,y inthe bars; but any other equivalent mode The adjustment ofthe disk is effected when the bolts are loosened by turning both the disks to screw P forward or back on the screw Gr till it comes to the right point, and then sliding diskl 0 and shaft J toward or from it, as required. rIhe cutters are adjusted at this end by swinging the bars N N toward or from the center along the slotted bars Z, and fastening them by bolts, as required.
The cutters D', for dressing out the seats or holes for the plugs A, are mounted on a conical longitudinally and radially' grooved stock, A', being confined by disks B', through which oblique extensions C' on their ends project, the
slots in the disks bein gcorrespondingly formed,
so that by moving the disks toward each other ,the Cutters will. be foicedbutward, and by 'moving them the other waythey will be moved surfaces to be reitted truly, I use cutters with edges or operating surfaces of different construction or form.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1'. rPhe combination of the spindle J, disk O, sliding blocks S', adjusting-sleeve T, links U, and jnm-nuts'V,.substantially as specied.
2. The combination of disk P and slotted bars W, of the adjustable disk O, as and for for the purpose specified.
3. The combination, with the center C and screw G, of the cutter supporting andadjusting disk P, substantially as specified.
