PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD G. NORTON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN KNlFE-POLISHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 172,578, dated J annary 25, 1876; application filed April 21, 1875.
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I RICHARD Gr. NORTON, of Chicago, Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Knife Cleaning and Polishing Machine; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a polisher with a portion of the cylinder removed. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same on the line of the shaft.
The object of my invention is to provide a convenient device for cleaning and polishing knives; and it consists in a cylinder provided with revolving disks within, constructed as hereinafter described and claimed. In the said drawings, A is a cylinder provided with the'ears a a, by which it can be secured in position to a wall or otherwise. are openings through which the knives to be polished are to passed in between the polishin gdisks D D. The apron E below the openings is provided with slots 6 e, in which the knives can be steadily held during the opera tion of polishing.
The disks are composed of wooden diaphragms (I, through which there are one or more holes, in each of which is a spiral spring, which extends through, pressing the outer covering of the disks in opposite directions, giving thereto elastic surfaces. The disks, having first received the springs, are covered with a coating of leather or felt, over which is placed a layer of raw cotton, 0, or other elastic substance. Over this again is placed a double cover, m, of leather or other suitable material, all of which are tacked or otherwise fastened to the periphery of the diaphragm. Between the double covering of the disks is placed emery or other suitable polishing material, and the outer covering is perforated to permit the emery to escape gradually to the outer or polishing surface.
The outer disks of the series are provided with only one elastic or polishing face, as
shown in Fig. 2. All these series are rigidly fixed on a shaft, F, which has its bearings in the heads of the cylinder A, and one end of which extends outward from the cylinder a sufficient distance to receive the crank-arm G, by means of which the disks are revolved. On the shaft F I place an adjusting screw-nut, H, having a female screw-thread. fitting on a screw on the shaft, by means of which I am enabled to regulate the distance between the RICHARD Gr. NORTON.
