I, OHABLs H. Lrrneow, of" the city of Chicago, in the State of Illinois, have invented an `Improved Apparatus for Polishing and Securing Knives, of

My invention consists in the manner of `constructing the disks to secure equal 'and elastic pressure of the rubbing-ribs upon the surfaces of the articles scoured,aud in `the device for insuring uniform pressure and action ofthe disks on opposite sides'of the knives at the Sametime. `It has a central shaft, C, with journals passing through the sleeve-bea'rings` in the sides of the case, as `,hereinafter described.l i t This shaft carries two disks, D D, of a size nearly i filling the interior of the lease, and whichrevolve with the shaft when it is rotated by the winch E.

The disks are provided, oi their proximate faces, `with brushes f fandrubbing-ribs g g, the space occupied bythe latter being about three-fourths and the former one-fourth of the area of the disks.

The knives to be operated on are inserted radially through apertures h h. onthe rim of the case, so that i their blades liebetweeu the adjacent faces of l the disks, and `are subjected to abrasion by the brushes and ribs, which are supplied with emery, or other f suitable abrasive material, in the following manner:

A small quantity of emery is placed within the ,casie, which falls, by its'weight, to the lowest point.

Small scoops or Scrapers i i, formed of sheet metal',

are attached tof the .outer side of each disk, at the periphery, which are connected each with a passage,

` jj,1throngh the disks, opening into the space between them, ata point near'the axis, and between the brushes. lAs thedisks revolve these mouths scoop up-aiportion o'f the emery as they pass the'V bottom,

which passes through and is discharged between the brushes, and thence, distributed through the interveiling grooves between the ribs; andths operation being repeated at each revolution, a constant and equal supply is maintained. 4

A'lhe ribs are preferablymade of leather, though felt i or other fibrous substances will answer. They are gluedv or otherwise fastened 4to the faces of the disks, and are inypart maintained in `positicm by interposed wooden strips l 'I, of -lessv projection, which are also glued vor securely fastened to the disks; .but between each of the ribs and strips'is first `placed a strip of `India rubber, m, on ille back side, relative to the di' reetionof rotation of the rib. This has the effect to support, by its elasticity, the leather rib, and cause it to maintain its position under use, while it admits of its yielding to extreme pressure.

In order to maintain an equal pressure of the disks toward each other, and against the knives which lie `between their faces, each journal of the shaft is provided with a sleeve, o o, bearing at its inner endv Vagainst a shoulder on. the shaft, and its outer one against a rubber cushion, p, which yields as a spring, the amount of pressure being regulated by the' screwnuts 'r i'.

The operation `is rapid and effective, both to polish and scour knives and other edge-tools.

I claim as my invention- 1. The disks D D, provided with the brush and sectional-ribbed faces, as described, in combination with the closed case A, substantially as and for the purpose described.
