IMPROVEMENT IN STOVE-PIPES AND GUARDS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 172,577, dated January 25, 1876; application filed November 9, 1875.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ZIBA NIoKERsoN, of South Carver, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful or Improved Combined Stove-Pipe Guardand Gap or Cover; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereofiwhich will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing. and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

In the said drawing, Figure l is a frontelevation of the guard, showing the funnelopening as closed by the cap or cover. Fig. 2 is a top view, with the cap or cover raised into a horizontal position, such as it assumes when a funnel or stove-pipe is inserted in the guard. Fig. 3 is a central and vertical section of the parts in position, as shown in Fig. 2. Fig; 4 is a perspective view, showing the cap or part E in different positions.

The object of my invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and effective device, which, when applied to an opening in the wall of a room, shall not only serve to support a funnel or stovepipe, and prevent an undue radiation of the heat thereof through the walls of the guard, but when the funnel is removed from the guard the funnel-opening of the latter may not only be automatically closed by its cover, but the device made to serve as a most effective ventilator, which may be operated by the simple attachment of a wire or device for moving and maintaining the cover at any desirable angle; and my invention consists in the peculiar construction, combination, and arrangement of parts of the device, as hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawing, A denotes-the front plate of the guard, the same being formed with a funnel-receivlng opening, a. B, O, and D are three plates, which extend inward from the plate A, and at or about right angles thereto,

such plates constituting the walls of the guard, and, with the front plate, being cast or formed in one piece. The top of the guard, or the portion in rear of the plate A, is formed open. E is the cap or cover, which is pivoted or hinged to the top of the lateral walls B and D, and in close proximity to the rear face of the front plate A, and so as to enable the Gover to be moved through an arc of ninety degrees, or from the position shown in Fig. l to that represented in Figs. 2 and 3. The cover is constructed of such form and area as not only to close the opening in the plate A, but when raised into the position as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, to constitute the top wall of the guard.

By this construction and arrangement of the cover when the funnel is removed the gravitating force of the cover will cause the latter to fall and close the opening in the front plate, as shown in Fig. 1.

In order to retain the cover in position when closed, the lower plate 0 is formed with an inclined lug or wedge, 12, having a notch, 0, as shown in Fig. 3, and the lower edge of the cover is made with a beveled edge, as shown at 0, so that when the cover is brought into impingement with the front plate such beveled edge shall rest in the said notch, the gravity of the cover maintaining the said parts in connection.

I would remark that my improved device is so constructed that it may be placed in ,the wall-opening, so that the cover may constitute the bottom or either side of the guard, instead of the top, as shown in the drawing; but I prefer the latter method.

I do not claim, broadly, the combination of a stove-pipe thimble, and a cap or stopper for the same, irrespective of their construction and arrangement, as I am aware that such is notnew. i

What I claim as my invention is- The combination of the guard, composed of the plates A, B, O, and D, and the cover E, pivoted or hinged thereto, the whole being constructed and arranged substantially as for the purposes set forth.
