Description

Patented Aug. 20, 1929.
UNITED STATES MICHAEL KONTER, OF ALMA, WISCONSIN.
DISTILLATION APPARATUS,
Application filed April 15, 1927.
This invention relates to the class of stills and pertains particularly to a still devised for removing poisons from liquors.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide in a manner as hereinafter set forth a distilling apparatus wherein means is associated with the lead-off tube of the retort for collecting substances having a higher volatilization point that the liquor containing them, the vaporized liquor passing beyond the'collecting means to a condensing coil from which it is collected in a suitable receptacle.
It is of course well known that alcoholic liquors sometimes contain undesirable and often poisonous substances in such quantities as to make the use of the liquor deleterious to the health of the consumer and the present invention has for its object the provision of means whereby this poisonous sub stance, as for example, fusel oil may be removed in part or entirely from the liquor.
A further and final object of the present invention is to provide a poison collecting means for use in association with distilling apparatus, which will be of simple construction, easy to operate and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
Numerous other objects and advantages of the present invention will become apparent as the description of the same proceeds and the invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, with the understanding, however, that the invention is not confined to any strict conformity with the showing of the drawing but may be changed or modified so long as such changes or modifications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the appended claim.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 shows a distilling apparatus in side elevation employing the poison collecting attachment embodying this invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of an apparatus of the same character as that shown in Figure 1, showing the employment of a pair of poison collecting devices.
Figure 3 is a section taken substantially upon the line 33 of Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawing in detail Serial No. 184,115.
wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 1 indicates a retort body having the constricted upper portion 2 and neck 3 to which is attached the enlarged end 4 of a vapor lead-off neck or tube 5. The neck 5 is of the usual construct-Lire as shown, being relatively large at a point where it is attached to the neck of the still body and gradually decreasing diameter to the point where it is attached to one end of the condensing coil indicated by the numeral 6.
The coil 6 is encased in a cylinder '7, in the usual manner, which cylinder has at the lower end thereof a refrigerating liquid inlet pipe 8 and an outlet pipe 9 leading from the upper end.
As shown, the upper end of the coil 6 extends through the top of the cylinder 7 and is completely housed therein, the upper end of the coil attaching to the retort vapor lead off neck 5 as described while the lower end of the coil extends through the lower portion of the refrigerating liquid casing 7 as indicated at 10, passing to a Suitable collecting receptacle, now shown.
The present invention relates particularly to the structure indicated generally by the numeral 11. This structure comprises a collecting receptacle in the form of a jar 12 of the type or character employed for canning fruits and vegetables, the top portion of the jar being provided with the threaded neck 13 over which a cap 14 threadedly engages. A suitable washer 15 is interposed between the top of the cap and the edge of the bottle or jar neck 13 as is shown in Figure 3, and the central portion of the cap 14. is provided with an opening 16 through which the ends of a pair of short pipe sections 17 open. These pipe sections, as is clearly shown in Figures 1 and 2, are arranged in V-shaped formation, the converging ends coming together over the openings 16 of the cap while the free ends thereof are interposed in the vapor lead-off neck 5, as is clearly shown in the drawings. As will be readily understood from the foregoing, the vapor passing through the retort neck 5 must pass downwardly and upwardly through the pipe sections 17, in its passage through .the vapor neck to the coil 6 and in this manner, the fluid of higher vaporization point than the liquor being recovered, condensing on the retort neck 5, will be led therefrom to the receptacle or receptacles 12, the other vapors passing on into the condensing coil 6 in the usual manner.
Suitable means such as a faucet may be employed for drawing the distillate from the receptacles as indicated at 18.
From the foregoing description, it will be readily understood that the means herein described ior collecting poisonous substance or substances from alcoholic liquors is simple, efiicient and requires no more attention than is required in the general operation of the distilling apparatus.
\Vhile the present description has been confined principally to the use of the present device in connection with the distilling of alcoholic liquors, it is of course to be understood that the same is not to be confined to such use but may be employed in the dis tillation of other liquids and in such other capacities where it may be found applicable.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
In a distillation apparatus, a vapor conducting tube designed to connect between a retort and a condenser coil, having a portion intermediate the ends thereof offset to form a substantially V-shaped section having an aperture formed through the wall of the apex thereof, a cap body comprising a disclike portion secured to the apex of said f-shaped portion having said opening extending therethrough, an annular flange formed about the periphery of said disc-like portion and provided with screw threads, and a receiving jar having a threaded mouth portion designed to engage the threads of the flange of said cap to be maintained in position with respect to said outlet aperture for the reception of products of distillation passing therethrough.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
MICHAEL KONTER.
