PLATTER AND PLATTER-RETAINING DEVICE.

This invention relates to platters for weighing scales and means for retaining them upon the spiders on which they are supported, and its principal object is to provide a simple and reliable device of this character which is so applied as to leave the upper surface of the platter smooth and free from openings.

Another object is the provision of a device of this kind capable of being used with platters made of material of substantially uniform thickness throughout and free from bosses and openings.

Another object is the provision of a platter and platter retaining device which may be economically manufactured from sheet metal and in which the platter is light and yet possesses the requisite stiffness.

And still another object is the provision of a platter adapted to receive a coating of porcelain enamel and having reliable and eflicient means for retaining it in place upon its spider.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, in which reference is had to the accompanying drawings illustrating a preferred embodiment of my invention and wherein similar reference numerals designate similar parts throughout the several views.

Figure II is a plan view of a spider equipped with means for holding the platter in place, the platter being omitted and its position when on the spider being indicated in dotted lines;

Figure III is an enlarged fragmentary vertical sectional view taken substantially on the line IIIIII of Figure II and showing a portion of the platter in place;

Figure IV is an enlarged fragmentary vertical sectional view taken substantially on the line IV-IV of Figure II and showing a portion of the platter in place; and

Figure V is an enlarged perspective view of one of the elements of the platter retaining device forming a part of my invention.

Referring to the drawings in detail, the scale to which I have shown my device applied is of the well known fan type, having a base 1 upon one end of which is mounted a housing 2 containing automatic loadcounterbalancing and indicating mechanism, a base horn or fulcrum stand 3 being supported at the other end of the base and sup porting in turn a lever 4.

The lever 4 carries a platform spider 5 which has a plurality of arms (preferably four) 6, 7, 8 and 9 extending outwardly for the purpose of supporting a platter 10 in substantially horizontal position. My invention relates to the platter 10 and to the means for holding it in place upon the spider Each of the outwardly extending arms of the spider 5 is provided with a boss 11, the upper surfaces of the bosses 11 preferably lying in the same horizontal plane. The ends of two of the arms 8 and 9 are beveled, as indicated in Figure IV, and the platform 10 is provided with a downwardly and inwardly extending flange 12 which hooks over the beveled ends of the arms 8 and 9. The arms 6 and 7 are made extensible by means of clips 13 which embrace the ends of the arms 6 and 7 and are adapted to be adjusted endwise to shorten or lengthen the arms. he clips 13 are preferably stamped from sheet metal and are provided in their lower sides with elon gated slots 14 through which retaining screws 15 pass, the arms 6 and 7 being drilled and tapped to receive the screws 15.

Vhen a platter 10 is to be placed upon the spider 5 the screws 15 are loosened and the clips 13 are slid inwardly to shorten the arms. The'platter is then placed upon the spider with the flange 12 extending downwardly over the beveled ends of the arms 8 and 9 and over the ends of the clips 13 which are similarly beveled, as at 16. \Vhcn the clips 13 are moved outwardly to bring their beveled ends 16 into engagement with the flange 12, the flange is securely locked in place. Since the platter is of uniform thickness throughout and is free from bosses and openings, it is particularly adapted to receive and retain a coat of porcelain enamel, and, since the exposed surface of the finished platter is perfectly smooth and free from depressions and protuberances, it is very easily kept clean when in use.

The embodiment of my invention herein shown and described is to be regarded as illustrative only, and it is to be understood that the invention is susceptible to variation, modification and change within the spirit and scope of the subjoined claims.

Having described my invention, I claim:

1. In a device of the class described, -in combination, a platter having a depending flange, a spider, and means engaging said spider and the inner side only of said depending flange to hold said platter in place upon said spider.

2. In a device of the class described, in combination, a platter having a depending flange, a spider having outwardly extending arms, aid means for lengthening certain of said arms to bring them into engagement with the inner side of depending flange of said platter.

3. In a device of the class described, in combination, a platter having a downwardly and inwardly extending flange, a spider having outwardly extending arms, the tips of said arms being beveled downwardly and inwardly, and means for lengthening certain of said arms to bring them into engagement with the flange of said platter, whereby said platter is locked in place upon said spider.

4. In a device of the class described, in combination, a spider having a spider arm, a tip mounted upon said spider arm for longitudinal adjustment, and means for holding said tip in adjusted position, a platter, and means upon said platter engageable by said tip for retaining saidplatter in position on said spider.

5. In a device of the class described, in combination, a spider arm, a tip of channel form, and means for mounting said tip for longitudinal adjustment on said spider arm, the outer end ofsaid tip being beveled clownwardly and inwardly.

6. In a device of the class described, in combination, a platter having adownwardly and inwardly extending peripheral flange, and a spider supporting said platter and having outwardly extending arms, certain of said outwardly extending arms having downwardly and inwardly beveled ends engaging the downwardly and inwardly extending flange of said platter, certain other of said arms having movable tips adaptedto be adjusted into engagement with said downwardly and inwardly extending flange.

7. A platter for weighing scales consisting of a plate of uniform thickness having a downwardly and inwardly extending peripheral flange, said flange being adapted to be engaged by, and concealed by, a platter retaining device and serving to impart to the platter an appearance of mass and solidity;
