Description

.. G. YATES;
CHEESE-CUTTER. No. 172,542, Patented Jan. 18,1876.
"' r l IIH 11mm UNITED STATES PATENT OFFroE.
BOWNE G. YATES, OF MADELIA, MINNESOTA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHEESE-CUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 172,542, dated January 18, 1876; application filed May 1, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BOWNE G. YATES, of Madelia, in the county of Watonwan and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and Improved Oheese'Cutter, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of my improved cheesecutter with top thrown open, and Fig. 2 a top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
In the drawing, A represents a case or box, made of wood or other suitable material, and of two parts or sections, B, of which one is affixed to a baseboard, B, while the front section is hinged at the top joint to the stationary section, to be thrown up and supported on the top part of the same, as shown in Fig. 1. A rotating platform, 0, is applied to the base-board B, turning on a pivot, a, of the same. The cheese is placed on the platform,
and fed by turning the same to the knife D, which is firmly bolted to a frame, E, pivoted at one end to the stationary part B. Knife D is provided with two rectangular cuttingedges, of which the vertical edge is above the center of the platform, and the horizontal edge extending to the handle E, by which the knife is operated. Handle E projects through side recesses of the box-sections to the outside.
The hinged section is opened for the purpose of cutting off a portion of the cheese; the knife is then raised and the platform turned till a piece of required size is below the knife, which is then carried down, cutting the pieces in radial direction from the cheese. After the piece is taken out the front section is brought back on the base'part, so as to inclose thereby the cheese completely, and keep off flies, Ste.
The front section may be provided with glass windows, and the rear part with wire screen, for allowing the inspection of the cheese from the outside, and also admit the requisite fresh air to prevent the molding of the cheese therein.
I am aware that knives with pivoted handle or shank, and with one cutting-edge, are old; but these are only adapted to thin cheeses, where the arc of vibration will carry the end of the cutter to so small a distance from its center as to be of [lo-practical consequence.
I do not desire to claim, broadly, a cheesecutting knife having two cutting edges at right angles to each other.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with rotary table 0, of the knife D and frame E, the knife made fast to the frame, and the latter pivoted to a frame, A, as and for the purpose specified.
BOWNE Gr. YATES.
